citica DSV
D S V D Series Saltwater Version You'll notice there is no drilled spool on the DSV, this is because the saltwater will enter the drilled spool, and into the bearing packs and crank assembly if used.

Problem with Revo S
I have to agree with Raul here, it will make you wonder especially if the reel is new. Although that part of the spool assembly is replaceable and does have it's own part number. If the reel is used then I would find out how much use the reel has had and then I would judge the parts ability to stand up.

NEW Daiwa Megaforce Humming ... Help!
luckyinkentucky, If I sat in a room with no other noise, and took a new reel out of the box and started spinning the crank, I would hear the gears also. I would also hear the humming of an empty ported spool when turning at high speed. The hum is air moving through the ported (drilled holes) spool. I would spool line on it and take it out and try using the reel, if your not satisfied then return the reel. dsaavedra, WRONG!A simple touch of the thumb lets you pick up seven inches (7") of slack line instantly or impart a subtle twitching action to a jig or plastic worm. Which on a 7' rod would be picking the tip up for about 3" then take up the slack. As bassin1887 stated... I agree 100%, learn to use your rod.....Tight Lines!!!!

Problem with Revo S
bmadd, I have a Revo S-L, if the brake blocks aren't snapping (making a snap sound) to hold them in the off position, then you check the brake pins for the ridges they are supposed to have, that hold the blocks in the off position. If the pins are worn down that part can be replaced, or if a new reel replace it!...

And the line breaks
Saw an article by Berkley few years back, about saliva and mono (wetting the knot) when left to dry before the lure is cast. Article told that the acids that start the digestive process could weaken the mono enough to cause knot failure. I would imagine the same would/could happen to fluro.FIX: Try using lake water. Help me figure out Shimano in the 1980s...
Most all of them are (circa 1980-85), all were discontinued late 80's early 90's (just after I started my training). The differences between them all were the gear ratios and spool sizes, line weights maxed at 10lb test on those reels. All of these reels came about, awhile after the LC Speed Spools, trying to use the tooling layout they (Shimano®) were doing on the speed spools. All of the reels basically were used by the touring pros for spinnerbaits reels, not heavy enough for anything else (like to days reels that can handle lightweight to heavy baits and lines all in the same reel). Question Regarding Reel Maintenance
IMPO Forget worrying about servicing a brand new in the box, never used, reel. Tell you what, I wouldn't wait till next spring to find out if the reel/s is what you really wanted. Take it out, and fish it (or at least try it), then if you have any problems, you can exchange it now, instead of finding out in 5 months that you made a bad purchase.. Just my .02¢ Tight Lines!!!

Reel Trouble HELP!!
I don't work on House brand reels, but links_man2 has got it down close to the finish. That is what everything is called. But the reason the line carriage is sticking to one side or the other and stacking line is because the pawl that he described cannot turn in the line carriage that it rides in. This is caused by dirt in the worm gear grooves getting up into the line carriage and has everything is all gummed up. Fix:: Get a toothbrush and some hot water, I mean real hot, and a simple green mixture, or get some Birchwood Casey® Reel Scrubber Solvent/Degreaser.. Scrub the worm gear and remove the pawl from the line carriage by removing the pawl cap. Scrub the pawl and rinse clean. Dry and replace into the line carriage. Add a quality reel oil to the small hole in the pawl cap until it is full. Then add 3 drops of oil to the worm gear. You should be good to go. The only time you need to replace the line carriage pawl is when you can see a very obvious half moon look worn onto the blade. Just my .02 ¢ Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!!

freshwater rods and reels in saltwater
You will notice that I don't say not to anymore. Because even with the information I have looking in the works of reels used in salt, your going to use them anyway. .. So I will give you what I know, most anglers wash (as you have called it) their reels down after a saltwater trip. This is a must, but just washing them isn't doing all it needs to. If you break the reels down after the wash to dry them out, if you don't get the salty old water out of screw holes, spring holds and slits, the salt water sits and eats at the metals in these areas, and the screws stop holding, and springs holds give way and stop working... :-? This is the minor corrosion problems you will find (open the reel up and look for the green colors). Even if you don't get a lot of salty water in the reels there is always the sand. Point: I just got a Shimano Stradic 1000 in with 10lb braided line on it from VA Beach. Complaint reel turns hard. I take the crank off sand in the crank bearing packs, removed the rotor more sand in the AR bearing pack and the pinion support bearing is hard to turn and grinding. Long story short all bearings are being replaced and the AR bearing pack had to be broken down and cleaned out. "I used mine and I washed them down and they work fine". Sure they do the metals haven't had time yet to start to corrode let them sit for a few months and then look at welded ares (Garcia), and see if they haven't started to turn green yet. I have seen a lot of green on Shimano Calcutta's FW reels that weren't serviced properly after using them in salt... "Saltwater reels use special seals on body screws (that doesn't allow saltwater to get into the holes). Special seals on side plates an frames to keep saltwater from getting into drive stacks, and worm gear drives. Plus saltwater reels DO NOT have ported spools. Do what you will with your reels! "Sooner or later either I or another service shop will get to see them"... Just my .02¢ Good Luck & Tight Lines!!!!

What brand oil and lube do you trust?
roadwarrior, The way this thread went I saw no reel reason to respond (Phlegm, Astroglide, K-Y, Mobil 1, Vaseline, preparation H, W-D40).

What brand oil and lube do you trust?
While there are tons of different lubrications out there.... I trust Shimano Drag Grease, and my oil and grease. The oil is from the same manufacturer that bottles Shimano' bearing oil. The grease is a Gold Lithium based gear grease whose viscosity never changes in hot or cold climates, and changes colors to deep gold when time for change. RW, Yea what question would that be..... :-?

rinsing out a reel
You are doing a reel service (clean and lube) each time out. I have regular customers that do their saltwater fishing only once a season and have me service their Saltwater reels within a day or so of returning from their trip. So if you are going brackish more than once a season with your (freshwater reels), you will be servicing them more than once a season it should actually be every trip. The only thing sprayed into the reel is freshwater...The really important thing to remember is, after you have sprayed the internal workings rinsing them with fresh water, is make sure you get everything dry! You will have to disassemble and re-lubricate , but never just spray anything into a reel... Tight Lines!!!
