Retrieving Stuck/Hung Up Lures and Baits
Boat fishing I retrieve almost everything. Bank fishing -- #&@$!. This reminds me that I meant to dive the pond near my house...

Senko as a jerkbait?
Ditto. I find straight tailed bladed jigs hunt better than even a fluke. It seems like the tail on a fluke offers some stability to the bait.

The latest sale thread
There are only left hand models available Does anybody have experience with their Slayer series of rods? I just bought the 6'6" medium casting for jerk baits and topwater. They don't list the taper of the rod anywhere so I'm hoping/expecting fast or mod fast. Fingers crossed. At 70% off, I'll take a gamble.

Kidney stones
I've passed my share. The last one was so large I needed lithotripsy. Lots of good advice here, but none about how to drink lots of water. There are a couple things you can do that make drinking a lot of water easier. Room temperature. Find a wide gauge straw. Minimum McDonald's size, but "smoothie" straws are best. I would draw lines on a 1gal jig to separate it into quarters. Then set an alarm for 15 minute intervals. Every 15min=¼ gal. Good luck

The Silly Names Thread
"Proper names are poetry in the raw." — W. H. Auden I've seen two or three threads about the very creative names companies put on their products and thought I'd make an ongoing thread where people can post their favorite examples. I suggest we use the rough format of Product name / color Description/ "better name" Manufacturer Picture (if you've got it) Explanation (if you've got it) For instance "Danald" Topwater popper with black back, silver sides and an orange underbelly Berkley Bulletpop I have no clue what "danald" means. BTW, I just found out the study of names is called Onomastics. What a cool word.

The names used to describe lures are nuts.
How about all the hyper masculinity in fishing lures? For a sport that's largely catch and release, there are so many over the top names. "Bass Assassin, Bass Mafia, Bass Widow, Smash Tec, Dominator, Warpig... There's this whole under-narrative of power, violence and subjugation that I find incredibly cringy.

I won!
I considered it long and hard. I would have ended up either losing a lot of capabilities or a lot of money because of how integrated modern electronics are. At one point, I started a cart on BPS just to see what it would cost to flip the boat from MK to Garmin... Too much. Plus, part of the original appeal for the boat was it's upper Midwest pedigree. The hull is from St. Peter, MN, the engine from Fond Du Lac, WI and the electronics from Racine. I'm originally from Eau Claire, WI so I figured with a St. Croix rod in my hand and my Packers hat on everything would match nicely.

Some of you may have gleaned that I have been dealing with a defective trolling motor. After the current round of service, they would have replaced: the head 2x, the main board in the foot pedal, the foot pedal switch, the motor, and the installed transducer. Essentially every significant component. Now, bear in mind this unit was brand new and had major issues straight off the showroom floor. I asked for a replacement and both the dealer and Minn-Kota insisted that wasn't a possibility. Their official line was that my options were limited to servicing that unit and that a replacement under warranty was not an option. F That. It took some arm twisting, but I got confirmation today that MK will be completely replacing the trolling motor. Corporations will be the death of us all.

What are your favorite ways to fish northern milfoil?
I'd have to put them on a scale to tell you for sure. My guess is they're 3/8ths.

gotta strange one going on.
No personal experience, but the DD26 Mean Mount has a lot of advocates. No personal experience, but the DD26 Mean Mount has a lot of advocates.

What are your favorite ways to fish northern milfoil?
Normally I would reach for an ewg but two seasons ago I was having trouble with the vegetation off the end of my folks dock. There was milfoil but there was also this thin vine like stuff underneath it. No matter what I tried, my rig would come back dragging enough to ruin my presentation. I had the cabbage crushers from a mystery tackle box and decided to give them a try. They come through everything. Since then I reach for them whenever I need to thread through some cover.

A ribbon tail worm on a Northland Cabbage Crusher.

What are your favorite night bass fishing techniques?
One that hasn't been mentioned yet: poppers. Bloop, bloop, bloop, smash!

I need a hat…
The KAVU chillbilla. It's a modern take on the "rice patty hat". After trying my friends, I was sold. The design of the hat means that almost none of the actual hat touches your head. When the wind blows, it blows under/through the whole hat. The biggest down side are the looks you get from others, but I DGAF what other people think about how I look.

Lews pinion gear problem
Thank you all. @Delaware Valley Tackle I think you have the right idea. I have other BSF reels and it was a cheap reel to start with. But, properly tuned, they make great BFS reels. I caught 3 last night on one of the other reels (OG Lews Mach). Popper fishing on a casting reel is a dream.
-
Lews pinion gear problem
It does work with the original spool and I'd be inclined to agree with you. However, I have three of these reels and the spool works in the other two. The more I think about it, it must be the springs.

Lews pinion gear problem
I have a cheap Speed spool classic (CP1SH) that I use as a bfs reel. I recently switched from the original spool to an aftermarket BFS spool and immediately noticed problems. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the pinion gear seems slightly off center and doesn't turn unless the spool tension is fairly tight. When it does turn it is herky jerky. After looking at the real diagram, it seems like it's either the springs or the pinion gear itself. Before I disassemble the reel further, I thought I would see what opinions Ye' Old Reel Sages had. I paid $30 for this reel and a new one is $90. Is it worth fixing? Assuming it is a spring, are they interchangeable? I have some other broken reels I could harvest from.

Do you land your chatter baits on the bottom?
It seems like I would, but I'm a novice fishing chatter baits.

Foggy lenses
Cat Crap. Bright red packaging. Made for ski and scuba goggles. Also, make sure your glasses are the same temperature as your face. If the frames and lenses are cold, when you put them on you'll fog up. Finally, it's gross, but you can get the same effect as dish soap with your spit. Spit on the inside of the lens and buff dry.

Ultrex quality issues?
It's a 2022 that I purchased new in 2024. It has never worked right and Johnson Outdoors has been jerking me around on the warranty. It seems like all the parts are back ordered and they want to replace one part at a time. I'm to the point where I'm just going to buy another motor, but after the experience I've had, I don't really trust Minn-Kota anymore. But, I don't think I have a choice. The whole boat is Minn-Kota/Humminbird from bow stern. That That sounds exactly like what's going on with my unit. It's a 2022...

Ultrex quality issues?
Has anyone else experienced multiple warranty repairs with their Ultrex? Specifically, foot pedal control boards and power switches?
