Today I caught my first 8" hudd fish... after over 100 hours fishing it over the years. I've caught fish on bigger baits but for some reason I could never get them on the traditional slow bottom crawl

Got out for an hour after work and got on the board for 2020. Not big ones, but felt good to catch a few in the middle of this stupid long work week that's messing up my fishing. There was ice around the edge in parts of the pond, but oddly enough I was spooking fish off the bank and saw some turtles creeping around under the ice. A very gently twitched 65 pointer in Ayu got the job done. Got up to almost 50 today, but it was not 50 while I was out there.

Hanging tough in Indy. 4 short bank trips in the first 7 days of the New Year to several different ponds and not a blank to be had :) That will jinx me good. All going to heck in a couple days with 3 days of heavy rain in the forecast, anywhere from 3-5 inches. Guessing everything will get muddy and flooded, and that will probably kill our winter bite for a while. Going to learn something in the process anyway. Got my baseline temperature reading in before the storms, and will see what actually happens to the water temps given we are supposed to have 55-60 degree temps ushering in all the rain. Will our lakes magically revert to spring time temps, or will any warm water just float right over and off the cold water underneath, leaving us with winter temps again? We'll soon know the answer

Don't know what the water temp was but that warm up and rain two weekends ago definitely put me on a spring bite. Hefty fish hitting lipless hard. This was a large HOA lake that's mostly shallow so temps probably change quicker.

No hawgs but landed 20 all about this size.

I headed out for my first fishing trip of the new year, trying to break-in my license and start 2020 on a positive note in sunny Northern California. Haha, sunny California I thought as I motor towards Franks Tract, the duck hunters were calling it a day as they pass by me headed towards the ramp I where just launched. The tule fog was negotiable, air temperature was 47, water at 49, and I’m thinking these are perfect conditions to be throwing Lunker Punkers for big stripers. Instead I’m going for green fish for a few hours.

I found gin clear water where I landed and picked up a rip bait hoping for the best. And I did find one, very hungry fish that inhaled my offering. One of the baits front hooks was stuck next to the bass’s crusher, the tail hook in it’s lip. She went 3.2lbs on the scale and released to fight another day.

It turns out that one doesn't really need a voice to catch a fish. Which is good, because I don't really have one right now.

This little guy helped ease the spanking the white bass put on me last night when I was fishing with @TnRiver46.

Tough conditions Thursday, but it was my first chance to go in a week and a half so I was going. Dirty water, 30+mph straight winds, and a recent major raise in the lake made it a grind. 8 hours for 6 bites, 5 fish, just shy of 18lbs. Ned rig and shakyhead.

@Bluebasser86- Ned rig and shakyhead in 30+mph winds? That's tough but looks like it was well worth the effort!! Nice Fish!!

I wasn't in the teeth of it, but it was plenty strong where I was. I'm use to the wind, so that helps. And despite all that wind, I didn't deep hook and kill any fish on a Ned rig ?

41° Water surface temp, 65° outside air temp today. Big warm up from the snowy/sleety 33° high and 18° lows we had a few days ago.

Surprisingly the bass were exactly where I left them last weekend. Wind swirling and gusting mid 20mph made it hard to sit in one place in the Kayak but I still picked up a dozen bass, mostly small except for two 4-1/2lbers. One on the Ned rig, the other on a 4” Keitech dragging it on the bottom around 16-18ft deep.

Also forgot to upload my first Bass of the year!
Jan 1 2020

She went just a hair under 5lbs at 20” long. Ned rig, what else?

Thanks, been working hard to keep it off through the holidays and have done a good job of it. Weird seeing pictures of myself without the round face and double chin.

Thanks again, I was working hard for them I promise.

The net is a Frabill Power Extend 1821

https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/catpage-FRABILL.html?from=basres

-Hoop size: 18” x 21”
-Handle length: 38” – 72”

It's a hefty beast, but for guys like you and I that tend to run into large fish of other species, a beefy net is not a bad thing at all. There's also no concern of the net handle pulling out of the hoop at the worst time, like fighting a new PB smallmouth on light line last spring ? . The other net feature that I wasn't sure how useful it would be that I've actually really enjoyed is the built in LED light and lift assist for night fishing and lifting those XL sized catches.

15lbs of angry whisker fish fit in it easily and the light made locating and scooping in the dark much easier than relying on my headlamp.

That lipless crankbait did all the talking necessary!

Wednesday was cold. It was tough be outside in the afternoon, but Thursday was beyond cold. Woke up to a real feel temp of 3°. Water was iced over wherever I drove by it. We were nicely in the high 50s by Friday and in the 60s on Saturday. I wasn't hopeful though. I figured the deep cold would have them shut down for sure and the best case scenario would have me getting some swings in on my new rigs. Hit a spot with a wading bud at 8:30pm. Southerly winds were cranking, but we started at the southern end because we can almost reach the deeper water from there. No bueno. Threw the world at them without a sniff. Instead of working our way north stopping periodically we just jetted to the north end at 11:00. Rollers were crashing against the north cove and the water felt noticeably warmer. I downsized to the Berkley Champ swimmer rigged weedless and got short strikes immediately. Frustrated with that I downsized again to the 1/8oz Storm GT360 with its open hook. 2 casts later a whopper Pickerel took the bait. First fish of 2020! Crazy fight. I then switched back to the Berkley, but this time I pushed the hook point up. 3 casts later a nice well fed chunky girl chomped it. I knew she was a dandy as the drag slipped under my thumb. A fighter! I went right back at em, but after a Pickeral sliced through my 15lb flouro without ever coming close to setting the hook I cashed out right then. A good night for a northeast January.
