What are some classic lures and colors you guys used back int he day? (60s-80s) jitterbugs rapalas and purple worms seemed to always be the lurea of choice.

What type of hooks did guys use in their plastic worms before ewg's?

I have fond memories of Mann's Jelly Worms - can't remember the length - from the early '70s. Think I used an Eagle Claw hook with a wire weed guard.

 

Had Hellbenders and Bombers too.

Mr. Twister Keeper Hooks, Tru Turn hooks, Gator Tail worms, sliders, Heddon Crazy Crawler, Mann's little George, Augertails, and I still throw manns jelly worms in black and strawberry reg 6" size, We had plenty of good hooks back in the day, I never remember having issues with hooks since we never used soft swimbaits and a straight offset hook was fine, and Eagle Claw, Mustad, Gamakatsu came around first with super sharp hooks I believe but I used Keeper hooks from MR. Twister and the 6" curly tails and squirmin worms all the time.....Mepps Spinners were big for me as a kid, and the Crème Midget crawler rig....Rebel craw cranks are still awesome, I like the shallow small ones for action.

I wasn't around back in "the day" but I heard hula poppers were a big deal

Cordell Big-O, Creme Scoundrel worm in the 6" size, Jitterbug, Crazy Crawler, and Lucky 13. 

I still use those old lures and search for them at flea markets and such. Jelly worms on 2/0 hooks still get used a lot.  Rebel Deep Wee R's , Wiggle Warts , Bomber Model A's , Norman N series , Rapala Fat Raps  and especially the Rogers Big Jim are still the cranks I throw the most .  The Bomber Long A is perhaps the best big bass lure I've ever used. Lunker Lure buzzbaits are still catching lots of fish . If you ever see any Bass Buster Scorpions or Tarantulas buy them . The more they get used the better they are .

From reading your posts, it sound like if we were to go fishing together, we would have the same lures in our boxes...I rarely use crankbaits that run deeper than a few feet anymore and I have way to many, I have lots of older Long A's, Fat Raps, Ireland Rapala's, and a local flea market has tons of lures from the 60's-80's from Luhr Jensen Sugar Shads, Rapala Twitchin raps (been getting $30 each and up on Ebay which is crazy) but long A's are so popular the place I visit the most and used to work has tons of older 3/8 oz long A's for $4 each, Red Fins, Old Smithwick, and many more....Rebel Humpy, Suspendr, wee r etc...If you ever are looking for a lure or color I will send It to you at what I pay.

 

I have a bunch of Fat Raps and vintage Rapala I am looking to move, and I would rather give them to someone who will use them and from this site than get $10 for a used Fat Rap or something.....I have some crazy Rapala Colors that are older and stamped Ireland...Wee R with the Forrage patterns, lots of that stuff, but the Long A and Bagleys are Florida legendary lures, Norman's for deep divers, and Rebel Wee R and Rebel jointed minnows are in everyones box. Older colors especially.

Back in the 60's, my dad did not use a lot of lures but THE one that caught us a bunch of smallmouth was an ABU Reflex in-line spinner.  I remember catching fish on a flatfish and on a pre-rigged worm too, but Abu's, as we called them, minnows, and poppers on a fly rod, were just about all we used.

Even though I wasnt even born when Jelly Worms came out, I "borrowed" some from my dads stash decades later and caught some nice fish with them. Yes, they still work just fine! Haha.

Nothing - even today - says 'bass fishing' to me like a Bass O'Reno:

The lures I learned to cast and bass fish with are;

Hawaiian Wiggler #3 weedless spoon, Creek Chub Injured Minnow and Jonted Pikie back in the mid 50's.

Don't use any of those anymore.

Started fishing with hair jigs (black 3/8 oz Doll fly with pork rind) and Creme rubber ( soft plastic) worms in the late 50's, Shannon twin spin and a long list of plugs in the early 60's. Mann's Jelly worms came out in the late 60's along with several other brands, don't use any of those early 50'-60's lures today.

Early '70 vintage lure I still use regularly are multi color hair jigs and pork rind trailers. Use lots of 70's-80's vintage lures; structure spoons, Scroungers, tail spin (Little George type) deep diving crankbaits, lipless crankbaits, hard jerk baits, top water lures, some swimbaits and hand pour soft plastic worms that are still made today.
