Both are great. I think Metallica has a little bit more variety that would set them apart. They are both behind Pantera though ;)

I definitely lean more towards Metallica, I just find them more listenable and I feel they have more great songs than Megadeth. While Dave's gritty voice works great on some songs like Holy Wars, I feel it takes away from some of their other songs. I can listen to 6 Metallica albums and love every song (first 5 and death magnetic), while I can really only do that with 2 Megadeth albums, Rust in peace and Peace Sells....but who's buying? But thrash metal wouldn't be the same without either of them. I also find it kind of funny how the fans of both bands continue to bash each other and fight years and years after the two bands themselves have made peace with each other. They're both good, so enjoy both.

As for Pantera, I never really got into them. There's a few songs I liked but overall they never really did it for me. Same thing with Slayer, just my opinion but I find both of them kind of overrated.

Megadeth for sure.

Put me down for Metallica.  Their first 4 albums are fantastic, it went down hill pretty fast after that though.   I never really got into Megadeth.   I was more into Pantera too.

Metallica for sure. Saw them in concert several years ago and it was an awesome show. Their new stuff sucks, but the older stuff is some of my favorite rock music out there.

Metallica, Slayer, Megadeath, and anthrax are the fathers of thrash. While they are all in the same sub group of rock. They all sound totally different. So its kind of hard to compare them in a way. Metallica's first 4 albums. Felt more gritty with long guitar solos, and more of heavy sound. While slayer has a quicker pace to them. With the guitars, drums, and vocals. Anthrax is kind of a mix between the two. While Megadeath has a early Metallica feel. Yes I know Dave was in Metallica. In the end. Metallica's first 4 albums are good. Slayer only had one good album South of heaven. Megadeath is good for about a hour. Then I get sick of them. Anthrax has only a few good songs.

I think many would argue Reign In Blood was their best album, but I don't have a dog in that fight.

Slayer has a pretty vast catalog of music. You know, it's not for everyone..but i love them.

Love Metallica too. Dave is good. Pantera was bad ass, before dime was murdered..

Listen to Repentless a few times..just dont watch the vid, lol..

If given the choice between the two,  I choose regular death.  LOL

No offense,  just not my cup o tea.

Megadeth all the way..lyrically and musically better in my opinion. Megadeth was great until youthanasia. Saw them play a couple times, once in a gym with maybe 250 people, I was standing 8' from them as they played. Went out for dinner with them one night after a show, cool guys...Nick Menza, their best drummer just passed last week.

Comparing the two bands is really apples and oranges for me.  Metallica, after Kill 'Em All, clearly got away from the Thrash sound that defines 99% of Megadeth's catalog.  Before Cliff Burton died they were headed in a very prog-metal direction, which you can tell on Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets.  Even his last song, To Live is to Die, on ...And Justice for All, carries that prog sound, while the rest of the album gets back to Metallica's thrash roots.  Then they went to a more hard rock sound which really turned off a lot of metalheads and that's really the only reason the debate popped up in the first place.  Most Megadeth fans, when talking about Metallica, would say that Metallica sold out and their music suffered.  Most Metallica fans would argue that their music evolved and adapted.  Most Metallica fans, when talking about Megadeth, would say that all their songs sound the same.  Most Megadeth fans would argue that the band has been able to stay true to their Thrash/Speed metal roots while subtly changing their sound from album to album and lineup to lineup.  The bottom line is, if you truly enjoy the genre, you can not compare a band that brought an entire genre into the forefront of music at a time when people thought of Motley Crue as heavy metal, and a band that has risen to the heights of commercial success that it has without compromising any of their musical integrity.  But without the first, there never would have been the other...

I have been listening to Metallica since I was seven and Countdown to Extinction was my favorite album for quite a while.  So I'm a little passionate.

Hey, it's a little more involved than a lot of people like their music to be.  Most people don't dig a lot of complexity in the music they listen to.  Just like to dance around a pile of shoes...

Metallica has 2 things that Megadeth never had. Kill 'em All and Ride the Lightning, and Kill 'em all gets my vote for best debut album ever. I've seen both of them live as opening bands in the 80's. Neither was memorable.

Slayer rules them both.

Justice and Ride are probably both in my top 5 albums (for all bands). Although I like every song on it, I feel puppets is a little overrated. I'd still give every one of their first four at least a 9/10 though.

I'll stick to the choices listed. Megadeth is definitely the more technically interesting band to listen to, but if I was forced on a desert island and had to pick between the two, I'd go Metallica. It's just more fun to my ears.

Megadeth by a nose if you compare their classic era.  Megadeth by a mile if you compare anything after that!  I was watching the Big 4 dvd recently and Megadeth and Anthrax were by far the best, Slayer had their moments, and Metallica were just god awful.  Lars doesn't even attempt to play drums anymore, and Hetfield remind me of the singer from the biker band on the movie streets of fire.
