Best Mono Line hands Down

Featured Replies

  • Super User

For the past couple seasons I have been using Spider Wire Ultimate Mono, not EZ mono but Ultimate Mono. The 8lb is .009 diameter so it is thin but the knot strength and abrasion resistance is fantastic and it has very little stretch, if it didn't float I'd think it was fluorocarbon. The only draw back is that it isn't as limp as some monofilaments but it still handles way better than fluorocarbon and it holds up. I normally try new line every year, I'll pick a line diameter and give it a full season but ever since trying the Spider Wire Ultimate Mono, I'm pretty much done trying other lines as I'll stay with it as long as it is being made. That said, I find that 2 spritzes of KVD Line and Lure conditioner makes it handle fantastic and it is a small price to pay for a line this strong. If you don't want to try that, the Suffix Pro Mix is another I like, it has the strength of Trilene XT, which I also like, but it handles more like XL but to me the Spider Wire is tough to beat.

  • This will be moved to the fishing line forum. Most 8 lb test mono is around .011 to .012 diamter, how about .011 diameter 11 lb test Sunline Diefer Armilo Nylon mono, not 8 lb but ranks up there

  • Best at what? Best handling? Best abrasion resistance? Best knot/tinsel strength?

  • Sorry Tom, I am a bit confused on what you said about Berkley not offering 8# Big game. Are you referring to regular spool or bulk spools? I have bought bulk spools of 6# and 8# Big Game in both clear

McCoy Mean Green makes some fine mono.

Berkley big game.

Berkley Big Game for a long time

Is Gamma copoly still worthy of discussion?  Just before I drifted away from fishing the unit was sold to a small private group.  We're they able to keep the quality and stay afloat?

This thread is 2 years old and the OP never returned to comment about his choice.

FYI Berkley doesn't offer 8# Big Game. Several members suggested 8 lb Yo-Zuri FC hybrid line ignoring the fact it isn't mono, it's co extruded multifilament line that is .011 dia that equals the average 10 lb mono like Big Game.

Comparing apples to oranges is a popular with fishing forums.

Another vote for Yozuri Hybrid.  Close enough to mono in many respects. Very strong, abrasion resistant, less stretch than fluorocarbon, doesn’t soak up water, sun resistant, great knots.   A little thicker than a lot of lines, drop down to 6 lb if you need to, still very strong.

Academy sells Big Game 8 pnd  in 1700 yd spool for about 7.00 DrsDrs

Up here in Canada we can get 8 pound Big Game in 1/4 pound spools. They also have 6 pound as well but I think they are old spools cause I can't find any mention of 6 pound Big Game offered on any websites. but my local Canadian Tire has them.

Haven't used Big Game in several years and didn't realize they offer 8 lb, that is news to me.

I really like Sufix Siege at least around 12-17lbs. It has much less memory than others I've used and is pretty strong as well. Haven't tried it around 8lbs yet, as I've stuck with Big Game for 8lb and 10lb.

Which mono without hybrids, if I said "Stren Original" will I still be aloud into the USA?:D

Technically, ANY single filament - nylon, fluorocarbon, copolymer, fluorocarbon coated, etc - line can be called monofilament.  However, the abbreviation "mono" has come to mean nylon line.  When we're looking at lines, I don't really care if YZ or a copoly is not a true mono, modern nylon "mono" is a blend of polymers anyway.  They're just all marketed differently.  I do not try to lump fluorocarbon in there, though.

+1

Sufix seige, elite, sunline super natural and siglon f

the thing I really like about sufix Siege is that it is a 'tough' abrasion resistant line like Big Game but it is much limper and can be used on Spinning gear no problem

When I tried BG on spinning I didn't like the way it casts (even in 8 pound).

but the Siege is very limp. For this reason its my favorite as it is good on both spinning and BC reels.

Been using XL and XT for almost 30 years with no complaints.  Absolute best?  Maybe, maybe not. But it has done everything I've ever asked it to and most of the fish I lost were not completely the lines fault; i.e., I didn't check the line and retie like I should have.

I've got a few other brands, but Trilene has been good to me and I always seem to go with it.

Gamma copoly and McCoys are both great. I use to like Yo-zuri hybrid but I had it break in the spool like regular fluoro.

McCoy Mean Green or Original Stren. I use nothing else for mono.

hey what is the very very best mono line in 8 lb test?

Short answer: there is no such thing as the "best mono".

Same for rods, reels, braid, lures, boats, motors, trucks...or anything else...

Use, budget and preferences define what is the best choice for each of us.
