Which crankbaits are your A-team when it comes to fishing certain depths .

Recommended Posts

When you want to reach a certain depth what diving crankbait models    are the lures you have the most confidence in .This should help a few anglers , including me , to wisely choose some baits  and take much of the guess work out of it .

These are all  judged using 12 lb Big Game .

Shallow diving the  vintage Rogers Big Jims are my best baits and I dont hesitate to use the only one I have left .

5 to 6 foot the Rapala Fat Rap has been  a steady producer decade after decade .

Down to about 8 foot there are a lot of baits I choose from .Perhaps my best producer now is a Rapala Crankin Rap CRR 10

8 to 10 foot I immediately consider the Norman Deep Little N

10 to about 13 foot the Rapala Crankin Rap CRR14 has probably caught the most fish for  me so far this year .

Beyond that to about 17 foot the Strike King 6xd has been the only lure I have had much luck with at those depths

17 foot and beyond , Ihave not had much luck with diving baits .

Next year this list will likely change as I am always evolving and that Rogers wont last forever .

Shallow Baits - Bandit 100 - Bandit Flat Maxx Shallow - Xcalibur XCS 200 SB - BL Echo - Red Eye Shad - Rippin Rap - Shad Rap - Scatter Rap Crank - Luhr Jenson Speed Trap - SK 1.5 Shallow SB

Mid Depth 6-12 - Don't fish this much with cranks due to weeds - Bandit 200 - DT 10 - Red Eye Shad - Rippin Rap

12+ - Crankin Rap 14-16 (Thankfully I have a few) - Deep Little N - DT 16 - DD22

I fish a lot of shallow cranks thanks to rivers and a vacation lake that has a big sand flat.

Timber Tigers - Models DC4 or DC5 or DC8 of DC13 or DC16.   I carry other ones in case I decide that the Timber Tigers aren't working but more often than not I run out of fishing time before I'm at that decision.

I've tried many brands. And for the money, rapala and bomber are my favorite all around. I always have confidence with either brand tied on no matter what model it may be.

If the water is deeper than 10-12' I very rarely crank because I am just not good at it, or have confidence using "Deep Divers". I prefer using a Lipless crankbait or Weighted Swimbait but I do like the DT-16 and Norman Middle N's, but the Rapala Line of cranks pretty much covers most of my mid range cranking from the DT-4,6,10,16, DT Thug is great for 4-8', and I have alot of confidence in the shap raps, shallow shad raps for 0-3', waking, spinning gear light line, and Shad rap #7 is the one I use most in 8-10' range.

I also use a bunch of the Bomber Model A...Fat A for shallow, 2A-6A, Flat A and Long A for waking and shallow as well.

Subwarts, Small KVD square bill, Bandit Footloose, 100-200, and my latest favorite is the Spro line of crankbaits which I really like, and the Rebel bluegill which is tight action and good in 3-5'.

For Wake baits I use the Manns' line and go as small as the Tiny, BPS Egg and the big fat DT Wakes which look silly but catch fish on days when wakes work...I still like thin wake baits best like the Rapala Minnow, Long A, Red Fin, old Xcalibur Ghost Minnow, but overall...

Rapala, Bomber, Bandit, Spro, Norman, Strike King, Speed Traps and Timber Tigers get most of the work but cranking is the one skill I am basically only as good as the mood of the fish.

I prefer a Carolina Rig or fishing a Jighead and Swimbait in deep water before I would tie on a DT-20, Norman DD22, unless I am with someone who is good at the technique, knows how to position over structure and run it into the bottom and structure, but Usually I would rather be chucking a 3/4 oz Bill Lewis Rattle Trap or Spro Lipless in 1 oz if in deep water and fish it like a jig at times.....

I try to catch fish on Wiggle warts but I get snagged and frustrated. However I have been in the boat when my brother would be hammering fish and I was just getting snagged and making him angry.

I would honestly tie on a Shad rap anytime of year, #7 up to #9, or the Glass Shad Rap #5-#7....I always go with that crankbait first since It is the only lure I have true Confidence in, Cranking is not my strong suit.

I actually prefer the Rapala Thug for mid depths of 4-8 or the bomberr 4a-6a covers most of those depths. I wish I was better at cranking deeper water,I know that most guys I know who do well use the Norman deep Divers as well as the Poes. Also Wiggle warts but that is tricky fishing that requires skill that I am lacking. I need to actually work on this because in the summer guys seem to do really well with these big crankbaits.

I never do well on the crankin Raps but I have a bunch of them as they look awesome, but for some reason I give up on them too quickly I guess. Norman and Strike King have some killer colors, especially Norman and the baby bass colored bombers work well and seem to be easy to fish.

I have tried expensive crankbaits for deeper water and can't say I notice any difference between $5 vs. $12.

0' to 1'  Mann's 1 Minus

2' to 3'  Mann's Baby X

4' to 6'  Cordell Big-O

In deeper water I through a Rat-l-trap and let it sink.

Reading this reminds me that my most productive lures often change from year to year. I have concluded that the things that trigger bass bites are not quite as clear as some anglers think.

Anyway, this year it has been these three cranks: a Bandit Footloose in chartreuse/blue for shallow & top water. A little deeper (2-4ft) and in clear creeks it has been a cheap Cordell Big O with Gammy EWG trebles and a Norman Tiny N in a seemingly irreplaceable brown/red craw color (lost that bait in the jaws of a smallie). From 4-8 ft it would be a 3-way tie between a #7 shad Rap, a DT6 in green craw, and an H2o Xpress CRULD -Deep UL in some shad color.

In previous years, a Norman Fat Boy, Mann's 1-, Bandit 200, a Fat Free Guppy, a Bomber Flat A, and a Bomber Long A suspending Pro jerkbait have been in my "necessary" box.

Sort of a rundown of what I use. But I do change it up pretty often as necessary/dictated by the fish.

0-2ft Mann's 1 Minus, Bandit Footloose

2-4ft Bomber Model 2A, and various others.

4-8ft Bandit 200, Rapala DT04, DT06,

10-12ft Bandit 250, Rapala DT10

I also through a Rat-l-trap, H2O LCR, or a Sebile lipless and let it sink to my desired depth.

Since my home lake is shallow (10 ft with a couple of 12 ft holes), I have the luxury of keeping it simple.  I break it down to shallow, mid & deep with the following having earned their first string status:

Shallow - Strike King KVD 1.0 squarebill (silent)

Mid - Strike King 3XD (rattling)

Deep - Rapala DT-10 (rattling)

0-1: BPS The Egg, H20 xpress wake, manns baby 1 minus.

shallow: Xcaliber 100, kvd 1.0, 1.5,  6th sense 50x, spro little John 50.

medium + : spro little John MD. DD.

I don't do deep crankin.....too much like work!
