Just read a post from Gary Dobyns that he is moving his primary operations from California to Texas. Here is a snippet:

I can relate to all of that... love where I am and isolated from a lot of the crazy CA things up here in the mountains, but the taxes and other things do start wearing on you. Best wishes to them with the move and continued success.

I understand the move for business reasons and the crazy California unfriendly taxes and political leadership. Gary lives in Yuba City near Marysville, beautiful area with Seirras to the east, Delta to the west and surrounded by fishing and hunting opertunities.

Dang it, why not FL ?. I'm sure they will do great wherever they go. 

California is a great place to live it's a beautiful place, but the political landscape and policies can be unpleasant for some, enuf to drive some people away.

Understandable, but I'd also consider that many of the regulations are meant to keep CA such a beautiful place. I'd move to either one of those states over the DC metro area if i had my choice (wife won't let me!)

Setting aside the reasons for the move, it will be interesting to see how this helps spread the brand to other parts of the Country. 

Great! With all the tax money they will save when do we see the price drop on the rods?

I for one, wish Gary and his family well.   That fact Sulpher Springs is about, what,  25 minutes from Lake Fork might have twisted his arm.

This past summer i had a a Champion spinning rod snap in half while casting a 5" senko. clearly a defect so I paid the money to ship it to them (they won't give a free replacement rod unless the defect is inspected). well you may have guessed it...they ruled it was rules my fault.  of course i asked how and the woman replied "Well the rod IS 4 years old".  my reply... "A small blip on the radar for a LIFETIME guarantee". i told her they were losing a customer for life if they wouldn't back their product.  after the worse customer service experience I had to pay $70 for a replacement rod.  that was the last Dobyns rod I'll ever purchase...and I could care less if they move to Texas, China or Timbuktu.  YMMV

I think that's why they are moving to texas, lower taxes and a central shipping location, to save money from the one customer that wanted a free rod after 4 years of use and abuse. And won't be returning lol

Some of them are, but some of them don't make sense to be in California unless your business is hard tied to being in California, and manufacturing rods or anything else is not. Personally, I'd move to Oregon because I wouldn't mind living there

wow you twisted my story like it's ur profession. 'free rod'? if wanting someone to back their product/warranty makes me a jerk then so be it.  'use and abuse'?  the rod was literally flawless and even had a beautiful longer cork handle built by Mike@DVT.

Unless a rod had been sitting in a dark room unused for 4 years, a 4 year old break isnt a defect.

Wait, so let me get this straight, you owned the rod for 4 years but never used it until the day you broke it? Or you used it for 4 years?

@Catt didn't say every angler moving to Texas was smart.....just that all the smart anglers were moving here......semantics

Gary Dobyns is a very generous man and takes pride in his company and customer service. To bash a companies reputation because you modified the rod, voiding any warranty, broke it after 4 years and expecting a free replacement is beyond reason. 

It sounds like you did get a new rod for $70. How do you know the rod had a factory defect and you didn't damage the rod after 4 years of use? I know of no rod company that would replace a 4 year old modified rod free.

I am curious as to how manufacturers can tell whether it was the fault of an owner or a defect. Obviously, a rod is likely to break in the first couple of trips with a defect. But, people say that you can tell by how it breaks. Can someone provide more detailed information?

 Pitching a jig into a lay down this past September using my  14 month old DX 705C I had a hit, set the hook, fish pulled, I pulled back and snapped the rod right in the middle.

One clean break, why I don’t know. Wrote a letter explaining what took place with payment of 2 checks totaling $100. 

$80 for new rod, $20 for shipping.

Hopeing I might get lucky and get my $80 ck back. No dice. 

Love the rod and I’m not mad, just wondering also what is defect or operator error.
