Winter Starts Today - Your Favorite Baits ?

Featured Replies

As the title states - today (Dec. 21st.) is the first day of Winter ... *What are your favorite Winter baits you will be throwing this year ?

On the Bassmaster podcast for last week, Zona was on talking about umbrella rigs.

I don't have a favorite but over the past two Christmas seasons (in Atlanta) I've caught bass on a Rebel Jumpin minnow and Rapala X-rap prop (fished shallow during a warm spell), and last year on a Rapala crankin rap.

Thought I'd mention those since they are probably not typical winter baits for most.

none my water is frozen and the season is closed

By the time I cut a hole in the ice big enough to launch the boat in, I'm too tired to fish.

Dec 21st is the shortest daylight date that starts mans winter calendar, nothing to do with the bass calendar, their winter starts when the core water temperature drops 55 down to 40 degrees, the cold water period.

I use lures that represent the prey source at the depth the bass are located. Deep Shad schools structure spoons, ice jigs, Shad colored soft plastics. Trout swimbaits. Crawdads, jigs and soft plastic creatures.

If we had some open water, I'd be tossing blade baits and slow hopping them off the bottom. But a lot would be dependent upon which species I was fishing for and the body of water.

Currently overcast skies 68° with a high expected of 75° winds light & variable

Down here the shallow & deep bite is on ?

I don't exactly "throw" them but a slightly larger than average 1/32nd oz ice jig tipped with a waxie catches a lot of bass.

Bet I could catch one on a Ned. Maybe I'll try that. They always bite a Ned. Inch and a half tail section of a Zman finesse worm on a 1/32 oz gopher ought to do it.

Jerkbaits-super flukes(jr's)-shad raps 5's & 7's, finesse worms and lizards

If I do any bass fishing from here to spring it will be below a dam on a small river and the lures will be crappie  jigs with twister tail grubs or road runners . I will b after bites and dont care wht the species  is.

Nah! Made it simple ?

Normally jig w/craw. But after today, t-rigged fluke.

Jerkbaits, blade baits, drop shot, and small bucktails.

Winter Starts Today

 whut ?

where ? :dontknow:

Bass season ended end of October and our lakes started icing up yesterday. There was a moment of silence as I drove by heading to do more Xmas shopping. Going to be a long winter!!

With the power plant lakes I fish, they might want a plastic drug on the bottom, or they might want a topwater, hard to guess from day to day. My most consistently productive baits are a RES, jerkbait, swinging football head with a beaver, shakyhead, bladed jig, and a Ned rig.

If you don’t mind me asking, what brand tackle box is this and what size is it? The one for the worms
