I love bass fishing but there is no way I would fish at 9 degrees.

Wouldn't everything ice up?  Fresh water freezes up fast at such cold temps.  I would think that your rod guides and spool would quickly become iced over.  Regardless, you won't catch me out fishing in that kind of weather.

Guides on the rods freezing is the least of your worries at that temp. You can soak them with wd40 and it will delay the freezing. The major problems are steering cable, impeller, starter, and launching your truck into the river. I have had all these things freeze on me but I still haven't dumped a truck in he river yet. Came really close twice and have seen it happen twice. My steering cable was frozen once so I decided to be a he-man and turn the wheel. Well that broke it. Had to fish all day using a paddle on plane to turn. I'm still pretty dumb but at least I was younger then. I have been putting off changing my gear lube here recently. I try to change it frequently because some seals are busted and water gets in. The two days after Christmas my lower unit was frozen stiff, finally changed the lube with the aid of a space heater the other day. I was getting a warning beep even after it warmed up and the impeller was peeing

At least he had the lake to himself.

Hunted geese the other day at -1 degree.

Last spring out on the kayak in 40 degrees and rain. I always feel like people see me out there are thinking "look at this idiot."

I will fish single digits after ice out and before ice up if I feel the need. As long as it's not windy, its doable.

That wind chill puts a whole different spin on things.

Well...like I mentioned in other post I was out with buddy yesterday in ten degree's with wind blowing.  Reels were freezing....had just lubed my small curado and it froze solid....well...until I dipped it in the balmy 45 degree water and then it worked!!  Guides had to be dipped every second or third cast...had to put my hand warmers in my boots and start a couple new ones.  Boat ran ok....but we didn't go far (too cold)  Saw two other boats.  Fish were biting quite good and had one dandy largemouth about five.  Would I do it two days in a row.....no.

:)

Where I live, water is typically frozen hard by the time we have single digits and lower.  However, lakes of a few thousand acres will sometimes have some open water if the temps haven't been consistently that low.  The problem is breaking through the ice to get to that water.  And of course you have your powerplant lakes.

Haven’t wet a line since Oct.  I can see myself doing just that. Heck, I vowed to take up ice fishing

We don't usually get that kind of weather here in Southeast GA, but it's pretty dang close right now!  5 days in a row with lows in the upper teens/low 20's and highs in the upper 20's/low 30's is rough for us!  This is DEFINITELY reel cleaning/tackle organizing/lure making weather to me!

I HAVE fished in weather cold enough to freeze up my reels.  Once.  I was young and dumb and indestructible back then.  I like to think I'm a little smarter now and my joints tell me every morning that I'm a lot older and most definitely not as tough as I once was.

I am orginaly from california so i hate being couped up for the winter.  I get out whenever i have the chance but it was 5 degrees here last night and there is no way i am going out with the 10 mph wind and 10 degrees right now...  I have started cleaning and getting my reels ready but that will only last so long...

It's probably not soft anymore! It was right on the edge yesterday.

About 17 right now...supposed to be the warmest day this week.  Getting up to 35...winds light.....yup....heading out in a couple hours.  I know they are hungry and I'm hungry for a tug!!  Won't be a long day but should be a good day.

Ice is something that goes in a glass.  In the South this cold snap will not last, so I will wait it out until this weekend when the low is 54.

In the ponds near me, we already have 2 inches of ice. Otherwise, I'd be out fishing! The worst time of the year is when the ice is too thin to walk on but widespread enough that I can't find open water 😭

I fished yesterday, it was below 0 when we launched, barely made it to 20 for a high. We had over 2 dozen bass, our biggest 3 went 19.05 pounds. That's why I fish when it's cold 😁

I'm shocked Beltzville was open. A lot of the smaller lakes are already frozen over. I bet ya he had to chip a few feet of ice from the shore to launch. You wouldn't catch me out there in these temps.

All 3 rivers here in Pittsburgh have been frozen for a week already.

You got the cold weather worse than we did in the east. Next Monday they say the high temps will be closer to average. I'm hoping just for that.

This was me a few weeks ago. Only ended up with 2 bass I think. 4lbers so it wasn't too bad and they hit lipless cranks. Another week and I think I'll be able to throw some lures locally only in a few places.
