High End Frog Rod

Featured Replies

I mainly use G. Loomis GLX’s and they don’t have anything that seems like a good frog rod. I couldn’t find anything in the IMX series of rods either Can anyone suggest a nice frog rod that isn’t as heavy as a brick? I mainly fish thick pads.

Thanks

I love my older 7'3 H Kistler Magnesium frog rod.  So much, I haven't even looked into replacing it (going on 5 or 6 yrs old).  I just got my dad a 7'3 HXF Kistler Helium 3 last year.  It's awesome and would be great for froggin thick pads.  I also have a 7'4 HF St. Croix Avid X that would be really good too.

I use a Dobyns Champion 735C.  Very light and well balanced for how powerful of a stick it is.  Also very easy to cast.  If I  ever had to buy another frog rod down the line, I would buy another 735.

That Helium 3 was the exact rod I was going to suggest.

Daiwa Tatula Elite 7’4 H/F, if you can get past the color it’s a great rod. Can bomb frogs and pull them through the thick stuff.

Otherwise id start looking at the Steez rods.

Irod Air 754. Perfect frog rod IMO.

I know for a fact IMX Pro has two models available.

ALX IKOS Toad Face frog rod is good for a higher end rod, problem is availability because of it's popularity.

I use Irod IRG 754F Freds Magic rod for frogs among other presentations but isn't a high price rod, just a good frog rod.

This. Ish's frog rod and a zillion is where I'd start looking too. Amazing combo.

Gloomis sells an 884 twfr and an 885 twfr (top water frog rod) in the imx pro series rods

I’ve heard nothing but bad things about the G. Loomis Frog Rods. Does anyone use them?

I really like the St. Croix LTB "Dock Sniper" as a frog rod. It's a 7' H/F so it's a little shorter and lighter and handles fish very well in the thick stuff.

Falcon Cara T7 Bobby's Perfect Frog Rod

I have three that I would suggest. Dobyns champion 735c, Megabass orochi xx perfect pitch or Shimano Expride 7’2 Heavy (7’3 xh if in really thick stuff. I usually use the champion 735 as I usually have a jig or trig on the other two. But all can be used and are great

A different perspective for you. I'm all for high end gear, but do you really need a high end, super sensitive rod for frogs? You need a stick with enough backbone to set those stout hooks, and to horse the fish out of the salad.

Save some cash on your frog rod, and spend it on a GLX, NRX, Megabass......etc, for your jig and worm applications.

My frog rod is a All Star Classic $35 from Academy!

Plenty backbone for solid hook-ups & pulling Hawgs out of heavy cover.

Money saved bought a new depth finder ?

It’s not super “high-end”, but if you want an unusual frog rod, take a look at the Megabass Hyuga 72H.  I have one and have been using it for frogs with great success.  It’s a super versatile rod and feels way more nimble then it should for how powerful it is.

I wrote about using a high end, heavy jig and worm rod being *my* perfect frog rod.  Light, powerful, and can serve multiple purposes.

This is one thing that is often overlooked is the fact that why does a frog rod have to be only a frog rod? There are many rods that could be utilized for more than just one application. For example, the Megabass USA Valdivia was designed as a frog rod, but also makes a great carolina rig rod (where sensitivity is important). I highly recommend buying the best you can afford even for a frog rod, however look for a rod that could also be versatile enough for other techniques.

Just my take on it. But I definitely know many do the same.
