Will there be another Bassmaster Classic?

Recommended Posts

Been hearing that last week's 2019 classic might be the last one. Is it true?

Last classic for all the guys that switched to the Bass Pro Tour but not the last classic.

No!

Bassmaster B.A.S.S. Elite tournament trail is ongoing. 75% of the top Elite pro anglers no longer fish the Elite tournaments and therefore not eligible to compete in the 2020 Classic.

I thought the previous year’s winner did get an automatic invite.

But, I’m not sure since he won’t fish any BASS tournaments this year.

Yes, the winner gets an automatic invite and fishing the Elite Series isn't a requirement to qualify for the Classic.

Edit: It looks like I was wrong, he probably will not be allowed to fish next years classic.

The Classic is not going anywhere.

BPT is a nice trendy format but their marketing team is putting their foot in their mouth a lot right now.  First the commercial dogging on the traditional 5 fish format making it seem like the anglers are doing every thing but stomping on the fish.  Then the video where they showed the career earnings of their anglers versus the Bass and FLW anglers.

Thanks guys for your answers. I don't think it will be so bad. It will give some of the rookies a chance in the upcoming elite series.

If you listened to some of the bpt guys, they are hoping to get to the classic thru the opens. Tuff way to get there, but it can be done.

Are you sure about that? Luke Clausen comes to mind.

Unless something's changed, which I guess is possible given all the changes in all the tours...The Classic winner gets an automatic spot in the next classic only if he's registered for and competes in all the Elite Series events for the next season.  Ott's already out in that case, since the 'next season' is the current 2019 season and it has already started with Ott not fishing it.  That rule has been in place for a long time, I think since 2000 or 2001, so BASS isn't trying to stick it to Ott - He and all the BPT guys knew the deal going in.

I'm guessing that Ott's Classic spot will be treated like the double-qualifiers where they'll just take the next guy on the AOY-qualifiers list.

I thought Ott said he was going to try to qualify through the opens.

No, I'm not 100% sure about that.

I'm not arguing with you, you're probably right but what happens if one of the Opens guys or BASS Nation guys wins the Classic? Are they also not qualified for the next years Classic if they don't fish the Elites? I would think the previous years winner would be in no matter what.

Edit: It looks like you guys may be right. I've seen one thing that says it will be up to BASS whether they allow him to fish next years Classic and then I saw this on another sight.

Adding to the emotion of DeFoe’s victory is the reality that this may also be his final Classic, an event he regularly attended during his childhood. With his move to the Bass Pro Tour this year, DeFoe knows it’s unlikely he’ll be back to defend his title in 2020. The situation is reminiscent of when 2006 Classic winner Luke Clausen declined to compete on the Elite Series that year and thus did not get the opportunity to defend his title in ’07.

No clue lol...Now that they do the Classic sort of midstream and not at the end or beginning of a season, it makes things weird.

The rule would seem to indicate that they wouldn't get an auto-invite just like Ott, but the Classic win also comes with auto-invite to Elite series, so maybe there's a contingency for if they accept that invite?

I've been trying to find a concrete answer but it doesn't seem like anyone writing articles knows for sure either.  It does seem like he probably won't be able to defend next year, I was wrong.

This topic has came up a ton since the BPT was announced. The answer is no he can’t fish it next year unless he fished the Elite series this year or qualifies through the Opens. The only exception that was made was a Cliff Pace years ago when he fell out of his tree stand and was medically unable to fish the Elites so they gave him a medical exemption.

The Classic will still be around. It's just going to look different.

I won't be surprised if a few of the guys who went over to BPT come back to BASS next year if they're not successful with the MLF format.

I'm with "TnRiver46", they'll be a 2020 Classic, and beyond.
