Personal Best!

Featured Replies

Caught my personal best large mouth from the bank at my local reservoir yesterday evening!  Oh what a rush it was trying to land that thing on a smaller spinning rod.  Of course I didn't have a scale or measuring device so I just used my foot (12") as a comparison for how long it was.  i had a tough time gripping it with one hand to grab the picture real quick before putting it back in the lake and watching it swim off!

I believe it was right about 20" long or so..  What do the bass resource experts think it weighed roughly?

Nice fish and congrats on your new PB!

It can be difficult to tell the weight of fish from pictures. Looks like a solid 4 - 4.5 lb fish.

Congratulations ?

Next time cut a piece of your line to length & one to girth,  now ya got a starting point.

You can look up average weight of bass by length. If 20" it looks like it should be about 4.68.

And that rounds nicely to 5 lbs. ?

Nice fish. Congrats.

5" wide.

I'm going to get a scale and tape measure for my backpack today!

I don't really think the pics do it justice.  Felt a lot heavier than 4 pounds for sure!

Thanks all!

Congrats! What'd you get him on? I'd say that fish is solidly in the low to mid 4lb range.

Thanks!  Carolina rig with a 4" Zoom fish doctor worm.  Watermelon color.

As Catt noted you always have line to use for measure. Length X length X girth / 1200 = weight in pounds +_10%. (L= mouth closed ). Girth unknown use 75% of length for average body bass. 20" bass with avg girth 15" is 5 lb bass.

20 inch fish is always in 4 lb range.

It really depends on how the bass is built. I have caught 20 inch bass that barely weighed 3 pounds and other 20 inch bass that where over 5 pounds. That is why it is best to weigh a bass with a good quality scale. The following formula gives a good estimate for how much a bass weighs;

Length X Length X Girth / 1200 = Estimated weight in pounds

there are exceptions to every rule. but judging by his pictures his bass does not appear overly thin or fat as a house.
