I know it doesn't probably exist but if you were going to buy one higher end (SC Legend Series) casting rod what would you choose?  I currently have an Avid casting 66MHF.  Do I even need anything else?  I use a spinning reel/rod 90% of the time.

For my fishing, something around 7', medium/fast taper would serve many options.  I'd still want the same thing in a MH as well, though.  So, my official answer is get two.

If you want the Legend series... 

EC70MHF or XLC70MHF

I'm with J.francho.   but if you cant get 2, really think about what lures, size and weight if lures, and where you u will be fishing...

 

Do you use spring gear, because that's what you like or do u fish mostly light and finesse lures?

 

I'm in the 7'0 MH camp. 

 

@Teal, I use spinning gear for two reasons.  It is what I like and I can throw very light baits with it easier.

Well the 7' M might be more in line with what you do.

I'd get a G Loomis IMX-Pro 843c MBR. You can do anything with it, and do it well. Jigs, swimjigs, chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, belly weighted swim baits, poppers, spooks, weightless senko, and even moderate cover frogging.

If you prefer SC stay with that brand.

I use Major Craft spinning rods because the quality is very good at the price and I like the handle design.

NAS-WJ701MH, 7’ fast rated 3/16-5/8 oz, 8-14 lb line, rod weight 3.7 oz,  $120.

It’s not a st Croix but the Daiwa tatula elite 7’3 multi purpose is a perfect rod to do it all.

The 7ft MF Legend Xtreme is one of those rods that is just special. Spinnerbaits ,jerkbaits walking baits, 2.8-3.1 paddletails on a 1/4 oz. head and a great finesse jig rod up to 3/8oz.

Fishes just a little softer than a Loomis 843.

If I go out on a one rod only trip I'll have a 7'3" MHF rod rated to 1 oz and a reel loaded with 30lb braid. There's not much in the bag I can't throw effectively from 1/4 oz to 1oz, and I'll even carefully throw a G2 Shellcracker on it. 

I have the 6'8'' M Fast Legend Elite and you can pretty much do whatever with this rod.   It is truly a fine rod, not too long, not too short, not too heavy, and powerful but soft at tip.  I have paired mine with a Daiwa Steez SV TWS. 

 

Another suggestion would be the G. Loomis 783C GLX.  This is one of favorite rods.  It can also do pretty much anything but it just has that magical feel to it.   

7' MH/MF does a lot of things well. I disagree that a true F action rod is all purpose. 

 

Better yet is something in-between a MF and F.

MH/F for me

 

 

If limited to a single casting rod, I'd be happy with a 6'9" Med-Hvy power with a fast taper.

I use MF a LOT.  But if I was covering those lures with spinning gear, I would probably want a MHF casting rod.

   Answer: no. 

   However, fishing is a hobby or pastime, and "need" doesn't have much to do with it. I think the people here are giving you some pretty good advice.

   And my personal answer would be the 7' St. Croix Avid MH/M cranking rod. The 66 MH/F and the 7' MH/M would make a dynamite pair for covering everything that the spinning doesn't. And vice versa.       jj

You can cover a lot of ground on a MH/F and M/F or M/MF that leans on the faster side. I got my oldest son a Dobyns Sierra 704C and 703C and that's a great two rod combo. The 704C is very much a fast tip, but the 703C is a little closer to a mod. fast so it can fish a weightless or lightly weighted T-Rig or a crankbait, lighter spinnerbait or topwater while the 704C can fish a jig, heavier weighted T-Rig or heavier spinnerbait.

 

Then add a ML/XF or M/F spimning rod for finesse and you have most your bases covered pretty well. F9r the fourth rod, add a H/F rod with 50 or 65lb braid for jigs and frogs.

 

That's not to say you won't eventually add more rods to the collection so you can have multiple things rigged and ready to go, but that will cover most lures from a minimalist standpoint very well.

I own many nice rods megabass and custom.  If I could only have one rod for everything it would be my LEc70mhf.  My second most used rod is my 610mxf.  If you could have both then add a spinning setup and be done.

If you already have a MH, I’d honestly go with a g loomis imx pro 844 mbr. I’m a huge fan of st croix but the mbr has one of the most universally good tapers around, if I could only bring one rod out on the water that’s what I’d grab. If I was going with st croix id probably get the 7’6” mh moderate fast or just the 7ft mh although I generally prefer rods 7’3” and above for most techniques but that’s just what I’m comfortable with.

@WRB, sorry for the confusion.  For the majority of my fishing I use spinning rods.  I only have one casting rod/reel for bass and currently it's an AVID 66MHF with a Shimano Chronarch 200e7 reel.
