Snap swivels vs tying.

Featured Replies

How many of you use snap swivels or clips clasps whatever you wanna call them for the ease of bait changing?  Do you feel like it causes less bites or negative effects on the baits action?

I'm a bait changer kinda guy and hate tying lures on all the time so I've been using swivel clips lately, but wondering if you long time pros feel it negatively affects how many bites you get using them.  I always viewed them as a beginner item and not to use once you gets some knot skills, but maybe I'm wrong?

I don't use them at all...I'm pulling jigs and T-Rigs through weeds and the clips/snap-swivels like to collect cabbage. I'm also a lure changer, but I use a knot that I've practiced so that it's quick and easy to tie while still being strong.

I remove split rings on all lures that come with them and replace with norman speed clips.

If it doesnt come with split rings, then it doesnt get a speed clip.

Palomar knot to the speed clip. I do retie after hang ups or larger fish.

I use snaps but not the swivel part. I change my lures often and I typically fish at night with only one rod. The snaps are a lifesaver when changing lures in the dark.

i use norman speed clips on my crankbaits only.  I direct tie everything else (jerkbaits, frogs, spinnerbaits, jigs, etc)

I retie but my eyesight is failing me . Twice this year I cast   a bait off because I tied a lousy knot . Maybe I'll have to go to a clip some day  but for now I need to take my time and make sure the knot gets tied correctly .

Haven’t sailed one yet, but I’ve had a few knots unravel as I was tightening them, so I feel your pain. And that’s with 8 lb YZH. I can’t even imagine trying to tie 6, let alone 4 lb line!

I've used snaps for years on anything with trebles that came with split rings. Jerkbaits and crankbaits as well as most topwater.  Fishing buddy ties to everything and we've never noticed one being better than the other. Just makes it nice to be able to swap baits and not have to retie. Everyone has their way of doing things. Try it both ways and see what you prefer. Pretty sure vandam has talked about using snaps himself.  I am a jerkbait fanatic and have never felt that the snap affected anything negativity

Same here. Crankbaits make me hyper, so I change them a lot.

When I first started bass fishing I used snap swivels because I only had 2 setups: a spinning setup and a bait caster. Instead of re tying all the time from a spinner bait to a buzz bait to a crank bait etc on the BC, I was able to quickly change using snap swivels. I was a teenager and I couldn’t afford to have all kinds of setups for every situation. I always re tied my spinning setups because I felt using a snap or swivel in those situations weren’t practical.

I don’t really use them anymore. Like galyonj mentioned it could be beneficial if you were going from one crank bait to another in a short period of time.

I like snaps for certain baits, mainly cranks. I always call them clips - they just don't look snap-ish to me. Shrug.

Never used snaps, ect..Always tied direct to the lure/hook.

I take the split rings off my hard lures and use snaps, but never with plastics or jigs.

I “sailed” a dirty jig the other night. It really surprised me as I casted it and the jig kept sailing through the air into the middle of the pond.

So here is something to consider.  As a jerkbait fan I am sure you are aware that things like water temp and density can have big effects on how a jerkbait suspends.   Often times if a jerkbait tends to rise rather than suspend it can easily be adjusted by just adding a splitring to one of the hook holders for some additional weight.    My point is that the weight you are attaching to the jerkbait probably has much more effect than you may realize.  It many not hinder your fishing in negative way, but I feel confident in telling you that the additional weight of the clip does or can make a big difference on how the bait behaves.

Totally agree and am well aware.  I honestly have tested and tested and for 99 percent of the time I haven't found that it matters much either way. I used to think it was a big deal as most would have u believe.  Not so much anymore. Plus I'd say the difference in weight of the split ring i take off and the snap i use is negligible if any

I use these, especially when night wading. Re-tying wet braid waist deep in water in the dark is not for me. They're super strong and come through muck and weeds quite well because the clasp faces in. The only thing is the clasp doesn't fit certain smaller sized hook's eyes.
