Current Favorite Medium Heavy / Moderate Action Bait Cast Rod ?

Featured Replies

  • Super User

I realize I have a hole in my bait cast rod collection for a good value medium heavy / moderate action rod in that 6'9" ~ 7'2" rod length for treble hook lures, spinner baits, chatter baits - and anything else you would use a medium heavy / moderate bait cast rod for. Since I don't need extreme sensitivity for the intended applications suited for this rod - I would like to target spending less than $150 (closer to $99 even better) . What is your current favorite (or one you want soon !) multi - purpose medium heavy / moderate action bait cast rod ?  ... Thanks in advance !

For me, there's only one answer in that price range

Dobyns Fury 705CB - I've used mine for three seasons now and am very happy with it.

Zillion G2 7'2 MH/R right now, but it's discontinued and I got it for $150 on clearance. I would think the 7'2 MH/R Tatula Elite would be about the same flex and that's in your price range.

Ark Lancer Pro

7’2” MH/R

Works great fir what you want and plenty of backbone.
I use The 7’ fast action for spinner baits but that’s my preference

Those PLX rods are really nice and a great value for their price range.

@ChrisD46

I'm a huge fan of the Quantum KVD composite sticks,

including the MH/M's.

Been fishing them successfully for a few years now.

Unfortunately, they were discontinued.

However along with KVD's newest sponsorship with Lew's

came their version of what looks like the same rod.

I do not have any of the Lew's but if I needed to replace what I have,

I'd try one or two.

+3

I have several.

Also, the Vendetta LTD from Abu.  Those Winn grips are soooooo so comfortable for all day fishing.

I’m going with my Lews TP1 now TP1X 7’-3” med hvy moderate $99.00 all day long. Or you could try A-Jay’s recommendation from Lews. If you like something on the faster side look into bps crankin sticks.

I'll throw in another vote to the Fury 705CB, I've been very happy with it as my dedicated lipless rod.

Halo HFX 7’3” medium heavy for me. Super sensitive, comfortable, and just a perfect feel. Use mine for chatter-baits.

Absolutely a joy to fish all day. $150 price tag but you can get 15% off if you look.

St Croix Mojo Bass MJC70MHMF $130. Great rod can do square bills spinner/chatter and more. Lews tp1 black closer to $99.

I realize this is more than your target cost, but the 6'10" St. Croix Legend Glass MH/M is one of my favorite rods of all time.  It's one of those rods which comes along about once per decade.  The Medium/Moderate version is similarly good.

I'm over your limit by an inch but oh well, it's that good! Shimano Poison Adrena 73mh/RF.

Some good suggestions above. Definitely check ARK out. They have several moderate blanks in both graphite and composite in your price range. I'll also add the BPS Crankin Sticks to he list. I have no experience with the split handle crankin sticks, but the full handle models are great rods at their price point.

The Powell Diesel is a great rod in that price range. Last time I looked they were 90 bucks. Can't beat it.

My #1 MH/mod rod is a 7’ Kistler Feel ‘N Reel labeled as all-purpose-power.

Thanks for the replies - a number of rod suggestions I was not aware were available .

Got sick of beating up my intenza/expired glass rods and was lookin for a budget squarebill/2.5 crank/mini max chatterbait rod, well come to find out my local BPS had the 1st gen St Croix BassX on sale for 59.99$ which is pretty much half off!

Got 3 for beating up in the kayak and just don’t care type rods, but the stand out was the 7’2 med hvy mod rod!   if it was full price the new Dobyns Maverick 705CB & the Dobyns Fury 705CB are top dogs!
but we’re talkin 2 bassx rods (plenty of tech/specific choices) for 1 fury!

used it for squarebills, River2sea smalls/biggie, & 3/8ths mini max chatters. So far it’s been a workhorse! For the $ can’t beat ‘em!
