Going to be putting braid on my Shimano Sustain fj 4000.....are there braids that work better for spinning reels?  Also debating on 20, 30, or 40lb braid...braids im considering thus far:

I like Fins approach with the different grades. In general my short answer to the op is no. 20# should be more than sufficient unless the bigger reel is for heavier spinning applications in which case maybe 40#

just liked the feel of it, was all they had in stock at the time....i know the 4000 size is probably unnecessary but i havent found it to be a hindrance other than it takes more line to fill

I use Suffix 832 on all my spinning reels.

Been using for a few years without any issues.

My favorite braid is Hercules no-fade 8 carrier in 20lb.

If you can return the reel, swap it for a 2500 series. Spool it up with Smackdown #20.

I like Sufix 832, but Smackdown is great and seems smoother when reeling. 

Sunline X-Plasma has been my favorite so far. I have 16lb on a finesse reel but for a 4000 Sustain 18lb.  30lb would be closer to 12lb mono. Also, like mentioned above, I would get a 2500 or 3000 size if possible. A 4000 is getting into the saltwater/big game fishing realm. It would work but it's not exactly the right tool for the job.

At this point I cannot…I do have a couple 3000 size Stradics , but the sustain 4000 seems to balance better with my rods , at least to me 

I like Fins Braid for a few reasons; it’s made in America, Color fast and quite casting.

The Sustain is a high quality spinning reel...the 4000 weigh a little over 10 oz with IPT pushing 40” and 50 lb braid capacity over 170 yds. 4000 is a Large size for a fresh water spinning reel.

I’ve been using 10-15lb power pro for years and never had an issue. 

20lb. 832 on my spinning reels. If not Smackdown 20lb.

Read an article by a famous professional a few years ago that preferred 4000 size reels for their line handling ability.  That size was all he used.  Personally prefer 2000/2500 sizes, but that's my preference.  There is no right or wrong.  Use what YOU like.

 

Currently I have several types of Fins braid to try based on WRB's recommendations over the years.  Original PRT, Windtamer and 40G.  I might have to try Vicious No Fade on a BFS spinning rod as line diameter is small compared to other braids.

Casts further also.

I replaced 20# (.010D) Smack Down with 20# (.008D) Fins Sling Braid because it’s smaller diameter and superior casting using a 2500 Vanford reel.

20# Vicious No Fade is .007 diameter.  I definitely need to try some on my 1500 Daiwa.  How has the Sling Braid been working for you?  I haven't tried any in that line yet.

Yes, I was looking for high vis braid and Sling Braid only comes in light green and chartreuse so both are good for that. I didn’t like Smack Down because it didn’t come off the reel as easy as I was expecting. Sling braid is very smooth casting.
