For those that use BFS equipment, do you have some favorite baits or lures?

decided to give it a shot and have no clue about the actual BFS baits and what to expect. I am going to use it for both bass and trout. This is will be totally new to me so any help would be appreciated.

I love to topwater fish and have really enjoyed the Jackall Pikupiku 78 Twitch Bait. It's very unique in that the line tie is right in the middle of its back. I twitch it and it flicks like a dying shad.

It's 3" long and weighs 1/10th ounce. I can cast it fairly easily on my BFS setup which is a Shimano Majestic rod with a Alphas Air reel.

I also have a blast with a 2.8 paddle tail swim bait on a small jighead.

Throw what you would on spinning, bfs perfers lures over 1 gram, especially if stock. Bfs for me thrives really well in the 2 gram+ range lures, even if you upgrade the hell out of a reel for maximum performance 1gram is manageable but difficult and accuracy is lost in comparison to spinning. Good trout lures for bfs are heavy for their size, just keep in mind this may spook fish more than a lighter lure of same size. I'd you are asking for lure reccomendations, I like

Tungsten in line spinners

Megabass great hunting

S Claw 70

Spoons

Yo zuri pins minnows

Yo zuri l minnow

Dynamic trout HD

Etc plastic small jerks in nutshell

For BFS you're not really limited by bait type but rather weight.  Anything in the 1/16 - 1/4 oz range works fine for me and that encompasses all the usual types of baits but just in smaller form factors.  I've even caught bass on the lighter floating frogs using 6 lb test.  Not the ideal scenario but if you get experience with UL spinning and BFS casting gear most lighter baits can be made to work.

This ^^

Take a look the Other Game Fish forum at some trout threads. You'll get some ideas. No reason some of those baits can't do double duty (bass and trout)

I got into BFS fishing this year, and have found a few baits that have quickly become my go to baits. For bass my absolute favorite is the Keitech tungsten mono spin jigs. I always have one tied on, and have caught a ton of fish on them already this year. The Eurotackle Metacraw 1.8" makes a great trailer for these jigs. I have also been throwing the Eurotackle Z-Spender 2" jerkbait with good success. For trout if you are are in creeks with decent current and don't want to break the bank the Tsurinoya DW106 Intruder 50S is a great bait. IT is relatively cheap compared to the offerings from Duo and Megabass, and I find it performs very well. You can pick these up from Bait Finesse Empire in the US.

Always remember the power of small jigheads and tubes. If you have difficulty to identify any of the lures let me know and ill send you link of it. The heaviest lure you see here is 1/8oz, Nothing heavier than that.

Roadrunners in 1/8th and 1/16th oz and then either a curl tail grub, Shad body, or small straight tail. It will catch anything.

How do you like the Majestic rod ? I was looking to throw baits in the 1/8 to 1/4 oz range which I know is a little on the heavy side for BFS .  I want to throw small topwaters with a rod around 6'6" in length with a smaller diameter 6 lb mono.

I have enjoyed it. This is my first BFS style setup and I didn't want to break the bank on an experiment. @bulldog1935 suggested this rod as a beginner setup and he was spot on. I can't speak to the heaviness of it as this is my first one. I can say that it will cast the Pikupiku with no issues. And that bait is shaped very oddly with the line tie directly in the center.

Thanks for all the great suggestions and please keep them coming.  I will be placing an order this week so I'm trying to narrow it down to about 7 hard baits and some jigs.

This is my set up, a 2022 Aldebaran BFS XG and a Dobyn's Sierra 7' Ultra Light . I was able to test it out last night.  I will do a review when I get more time with it.

Pretty sweet. This thread is tempting me.

, just keep in mind if you are doing it for heavier baits for trout, that will work fine but even the best custom spool and bearing bfs reels usually cap around 1 gram, and stock budget reels (200$ and lower) with 7-9 gram spool caps out at 2-2.5 gram depending on reel, spinning reels are much more versatile (and way more practical for sub 1 gram lures) if you are looking at the situation from a utilitarian standpoint no debate. (If it's mostly for bass or you dont mind using heavier lures (1/16th+) then ignore it and it could be worth pulling the trigger. (Or if you just want to have fun, but this is the utilitarian idea on usefulness and practical useage.

It's just for fun for me as well.

When BFS stuff comes up, I am usually the one that says something like the line from from Jurassic Park.... You Were So Preoccupied With Whether Or Not You Could, You Didn’t Stop To Think If You Should

So far it has been a lot of fun. The pond I go to has a lot of 1.5-2lb fish and when you hook into one with the setup I have, it feels like a monster on the end of the line.  A 3+lb'er feels like a once in lifetime fish. I have 4 spinning rod set ups and I have fished them with light stuff but this is a whole different way of fishing.  I can't really explain it. It's not for everybody though and I get that. I like it because it opens up a different kind of fishing for me.

There are other rabbit hole discussions when it comes to BFS about spooking fish with heavy line, light line and hook ratios, little baits equal small fish, etc.  I can tell you this.  I have fished my new set up twice at two different ponds and I caught 20+ fish at each time in about 2 hour time frame. I have fished these ponds for years and never I have I caught that many fish. I usually get about 3-5 fish if I am lucky so whatever this BFS stuff is I'm sold so far.

I’m interested for the exact same reasons you just mentioned. Sounds like fun, and I like fun…………and getting new gear.

Yes it's an absolute blast, sure we may backlash every once in a while but there is something satisfying about catching bluegill trout and bass on baitcasting. I think it Excells best for bass in shallow, calm, clear water or spooky shallow bass situations, spinning struggles loud splashes  on flipping and pitching even on light trick worms or Weightless ned baits.

Now is probably the best time to buy, with the exchange rate for jdm reels being screwy, I've not seen it like this for a while
