Today upstate New York. Does this look like a fox, or just a regular dog ?

Looks like a fox that isn't in very good shape to me.

Foxes have bushy tails and it doesn’t look like you’re critter does.   I vote dog or some kind of fox that I’m not familiar with.

Rough looking red fox. In summer they often get mange in their fur which can also affect their bushy tails.

Yup, most likely mange.

A young fox with black sox.

Hard to tell the size, but I'm going juvenile fox. 

Almost certain it's a Red fox under dressed...... probably battling mange.

I'm in agreement that it's a fox who's had a rough time lately...mange would account for this.

I rarely see or catch a healthy looking one in summer. Parasites are hard on a wild dog
