Update: It turns out there must be 6 or more people or else they would have to notify the WDFW, so they’re off the hook, lol.

It sux that I live in a tax and fee happy state. They milk me such that I have to buy a freshwater license and a salt water license. Also, you are not a “senior” to get the $7.50 senior license rate. Anyone 15-69 must pay:

FW $29.50

SW $30.05

combination license: $55.35

Shellfish: $17.40

The one redeeming quality that keeps me here is the ? evergreen. Peace.

I am pretty sure every state that has fresh and saltwater has two different licenses, at least the 8 or so I have visited that have both do.

In club tournaments we always have a voluntary side pot for the heaviest and a “trash” fish.

Give me a set of dice, a table and leave me alone!

I play poker with the same friends every 3 months for the past 20yrs.

But I only do it for the participation, cooperation and stimulating conversation!!

One of the reasons I dropped out of tournaments was that I saw how $ changed the personalities of the guys I knew and it wasn’t for the good.  There were some exceptions.  The tournament trail I fished in Florida was loads of fun and there was a standing agreement that if one of the teams that were in our group of about 5 boats won, they had to buy lunch for the rest.  That usually ate up all the winnings?. On our annual trip to Lake St Clair where we rent a cottage on an island, at the end of the day we all compare who caught what and the winner had to eat the hunk of fruit, either apple or peach from the bottom of the genuine, home stilled, delicious, moonshine we brought.  We had on jar a night between 7 of us and it got passed around until the winner had to eat the fruit.  They were normally the first one in bed.?

Fishing tournaments adds another dimension to the sport of bass fishing.  Fishing them can significantly improve your skill level as competition is a great motivator.  Unfortunately, some people have a difficult time keeping their ego out of the game.   It's not money that causes problems, it's pride.  No matter how good you are, no one wins all the time.  One day you are a hero and the next day you are a zero.   If you can't handle that, you shouldn't be fishing competitively.

Not for money but one of my most fun fishing days ever was me and a friend surf fishing for perch. He caught two right away and bragged so we made it a contest, and of course I had my camera.

We ran around that beach, little fun trash talk. He won, 13 - 12.

I am 99% not a gambler, but I have a single coworker whom I constantly make $1 bets with about all manner of nonsense over the work day.  I think our “record” is maybe twenty bucks changing hands in a single day.  Generally though, if I show up for a gig with twenty singles in my wallet, that’s enough for a week’s wagers.

Unfortunately,.. In my experience, it was money AND ego that caused the issue.

I joined a bass club for a couple years when I moved here because I figured it would be a good way to learn the lakes and make some new friends in the area. It didn't take long to realize the only thing most of the members cared about were the tournaments.

Nobody ever wanted to just go fishing unless it was prefishing for the upcoming tournament, and then if you did that, they'd get mad at you for actually catching it and not just looking for bites.

The final straw was when they started saying you couldn't have anybody in your boat during tournaments other than a co-angler. Meaning no spouse, no friend. You had to be alone because "They might help you cheat".

They completely took the fun out of fishing so I finally told them to kiss off and left the club.

Before you join any bass club make sure it's going to be a good fit for you.  Some clubs are all about competition and some aren't.  If you are in a club to learn, you want to fish with the best.  If you are there to make friends, fishing skill is not a high priority.  In any bass club there are going to be differences.  Some members will have the best of everything and some will be fishing on a budget.  Some will be seasoned veterans and others will new to bass fishing.  Some members like to talk and some don't.  It's best to keep to yourself until you find out where you fit in.  If you feel uncomfortable, find a different club.  It's all about learning, making friends and having fun.  Some of the best times I have had fishing were in a bass club.

Understand where you're coming from and I wasn't trying to say all clubs were like that. Just that money and ego can really ruin things, especially in the experience I had.

Meetings were terrible with this club because all they did was fight over rules because "if they didn't, it would be too easy for people to cheat". They would recruit new members then pressure them to fish the tournaments to up the amount of winnings in the pot. Then when they didn't, some wanted to put in rules that you had to fish the tournaments if you were a member because "otherwise just getting their annual dues wasn't benefit enough to everyone".

Horrible experience!!

I have 2 different groups I fish with.

One group all fun fisherman everyone throws $1 in, biggest fish of the weekend wins.

2nd group all tournament anglers. standard $3 bet in each boat.  $1 for first fish, $1 for biggest and $1 for most. I can tell you there are some framed $1 bills that are signed because of who lost the dollars.

We bet chores when on fishing trips.  Loser cleans dishes, fish, whatever. Way more glorious than money.

As a former gentleman's club manager of five years I will tell you that a smart stripper will gladly accept a roll of quarters if it is not tossed at them. That's 10 bucks and a good stage tip. You wanna look like an arse (and maybe get tossed out), throw single quarters.

I don't see it as gambling if you play for money any more than competing in a tournament where you are required to pay to enter. You are one of the participants, not just pulling a lever on a machine spitting out random numbers.

The wife asks to come fish maybe 3 times a year. I wager a piece of clothing for each fish. She's not shy so it gets pretty fun.
