I dont love it.  but my elderly neighbors do so I am making some so I can take it to them.  they live solo and doing a big hunk of meat isn't in their rotation anymore.

 

granted I just buy a hunk from Costco, so quality is suspect?  dunno.  I am Chinese, not Irish.  hahah..

 

 

but the next day, the Hash is sick!!  I love the leftovers.  poached egg.....ummmm.

Not a huge corned beef and cabbage guy. But a Reuben, or just a corned beef and Swiss on rye with mustard? Absolutely!

Corned beef and cabbage is one of my favorite meals. Not just to be eaten at St. Paddy’s day! 

I love Corned beef, cabbage and potatoes. I’ll take a good corned beef brisket over a steak any day.

So I came home and smelled cabbage. I thought “Holy crap! The wife made corned beef and cabbage!” Nope. It was ham, cabbage, potatoes and green beans. 
 

TMI, I’m glad I looked over my post before submitting, as I omitted the word “home” in my first sentence.

That’s something I’ve never heard before lol. Goes to show you we are not all the same! 

I'm all for celebrating what St. Patrick did, but let's not do that again until next year.

I like corned beef but the cost is outrageous. Saw it “on sale” at the deli last weekend for $13.99/pound. Too rich for my blood. I like it, but not that much.

 

Saukraut is disgusting. Great way to ruin a sandwich or a meal. The smell alone makes me want to barf.

Man. Thanksgiving isn’t Thanksgiving without a pot of sauerkraut with a piece of roasted port until the kraut turns brown. 
 

As far as “cost”, this reminds me of the talks I’ve had with my wife over the cost of steak. I’ll see a nice, well-marbled NY Strip for $17.00-$19.00 and she’ll say it’s too expensive. Then I’ll order a $42.00 steak at a steakhouse with no questions asked. 
 

Depending on appetite, you can make 2-4 sandwiches out of a pound of corned beef for $14.00/lb. That’s $3.50 to $7.00 a sandwich. A Reuben at the local Katz’s Deli is $13.99 with a pickle.

I love saukraut. I love most fermented stuff, like Kimchee.

 

my wife invited friends over to walk.  their timing was unfortunate.  as I was finishing up the food they walked in (after their walk) and all said, "wow, that smells good!"

 

my wife asks, "you all want to stay for dinner?"

 

"YAY!"

 

there are no leftovers friends.  no day after hash!!!  wow.  just wow.

dood.  hahahah.. no thanks.  way too salty for me.   my phillipine friends love canned corn beef stuff. they bring it camping all the time.  and me..Yippee.  "pass the hot sauce bud."  and scoop extra rice

Wife is 1/2 Irish, so yeah, corn beef for St Patrick's every year, she forwarded me the link to the Catholic Church saying it was ok this Friday. I kid her that we gave the Irish the potato, and they messed it up like they do everything else, and that Irish corn beef and cabbage is basically just Peruvian sancochado without any taste, then I segway into a parity of a Lucky Charms commercial, and a Michael Flatley imitation, luckily, the couch is quite comfy. We are having left over corn beef on rye sandwiches for lunch in a few.

It tastes like something I couldn't stand as a kid, and with an Irish father I had to eat it under penalty of a medieval Irish whooping. It tastes worse ice cold after sitting at the table for 2 hours after everyone had finished. I took the clobbering more than once.

For barbecue? Negative. For corned beef? It’s actually pickled for 5-7 days and then simmered in the pickling until tender. You never bake/broil/roast/grill/smoke a brisket for corned beef.

It would be crazy salty if you roasted a cure hunk.

I cook mine in the crockpot all day. Falls apart with a fork. I smoke my regular Briskets but gonna try smoking the next Corn beef one I get.

I read articles and blogs where people got such a salty end product by not braising in enough liquid. part of the process in cooking is the salt leaches out into the cooking water.  

 

I imagine if you are using a commercial corned beef, it would be so salty.   I rinsed and soaked mine 3x, and it was still very salty.  and I cooked it submerged.  

I fill the crock pot with cabbage too and put a little water in the bottom. Never had one turn out too salty.

but if you smoked it?  you would braise it first?

Oh. I watched a video and I want to try it the way he did it. Once the meat temperature of the brisket reached 160 degrees, he put the brisket in an aluminum pan and poured a beer in it, then covered it in foil for the rest of the cook. I’d have to find the video again to see if he soaked it first.
