So besides a toad what are your favorite plastics to swim on top?

Tangent alert...  excellent bait on a carolina rig.

I like to use a Money MInnow (3.5 in up to 6 in.) and reel it fast enough to have it swim on the surface or just under the surface. I rig the 3.5 with a 5/0 ewg hook texposed in the body. The larger ones I use the line thru the body to a treble hook most of the time. The 3.5 can be cast right on top of weeds and lily pads and dragged off. When fish want a fast moving top water this can be deadly. But it seems to be feast of famine. The money minnow is the only bait I have had success with doing this. Every other similar bait I have tried tends to roll over when retrieved.

this has my attention. I picked up a pack this winter for Texas rigging but they are big and I haven’t gotten to them. I think on top of the water thought that might be a lot of action in all those legs. Love it.

Yes. Rigged weightless on a ML/F, you can stall it to your heart’s content and cast it a mile.

The Zman Goatz

This is a good one. The Billy Goat particularly works well for me (that's the largest one). Rigged weightless on a Mustad KVD Grip-Pin. Holds them on nicely. Also, they float so you can do stop/go retrieves if you desire.

A ribbontail worm works well as a topwater bait over emergent grass and lilies.
