True. He has this add posted on every job site in our area. Local newspapers also. Someone will turn up eventually. Then the question is how long will they work?

Working is difficult. People don’t like difficult. I’m talking about adults, not the kids. I teach inner city public high school. The kids get a bad rap. The d**n adults are worse than the kids. Kids

  • It always amazes me to hear statements like, I’m not wasting my life at a job….40 hours and I’m out….life is too short to spend it working….My question is always what are you going to do when your 70

He had a very good helper named Jordan. He paid Jordan 24 dollars per hr, with paid holidays and insurance that was very affordable. Jordan worked full time for two years, then recently moved back to Michigan to help his mom. So, he needs a good hand now.

Those exorbitant wages, people being paid for not working, lack of interest in a respectable career, etc., etc., seemed to grow by leaps and bounds since 2020.  Cities cannot receive applications for police officers and fire fighters.  Some people are even being led to believe they can borrow money and not have to pay it back.  I'm 81 years old, disgusted, and I'm curious which younger age groups feel as I do;  where is the age break?  Many whose wages have doubled and tripled are wondering why things suddenly cost so much more and their standard of living has not improved.  Some of those people are raising children, imagine what their attitudes will be going forward.  I'm going to sign off, this is a Bass Fishing Forum, but this thread hit a real sore spot.

Not sure what kind of working people this refers to. Corporate people maybe, but not working people. Tell me what working class jobs have doubled or tripled?

I have several friends and family members that work hard, raise a family, and went to Iraq and/or Afghanistan. Do they count?? Apparently not. There will be wars, people working and raising families for years to come

Of Course they count!

Personally I think they count more than most!

Anybody who’s committed enough to his beliefs and sacrifices to build a family should be condemned.

Folks like your family and friends are the ones who in the long run will save us all.

My son wanted to join the Marines more than anything else.
He didn’t care about scholarship’s or being on some deans list.
Came home, built a life and would do it again.

I know plenty of workaholics. They just look different than they did when I was a kid.  People with a good work ethic are doing better than ever.   Yes there are people who can't keep a job but these people have always existed.

The labor participation rate has been dropping since the late 90s but it's still higher than it was in the 1950s.  It started going up in the late 60s when women stopped being stay at home moms.  It started dropping in 2000 as the population got older.  What does the typical person who doesn't work and has no interest in work look like?  Like me.  I'm still of working age but was fortunate enough to be able to retire at age 59.

So why is there a big shortage of people who want to work in the trades?  I think it takes a certain type of person for this work.  It's typically a guy who helped his dad change the oil in the car when he was a kid.   More boys are growing up without this type of influence in their life so there are fewer men with the mentality to work with their hands.  Of those that do have the right mentality,  more of them are choosing to go to college than did a generation ago.  When I graduated from high school my dad offered to get me a position as an apprentice pipefitter but he encouraged me to go to college instead.  I chose college over pipefitting and even more are making that choice today.

The only way the statement “nobody wants to work anymore” is true is if there are a couple more words added onto the end of it.

Frankly, $18 an hour is poverty with how expensive everything is nowadays. I'm not surprised he's not getting any applications. Especially from younger people like me who were told over and over growing up to go to school, get good grades, get into a good college and work hard to graduate only to be met with jobs that pay less than $40k a year. The sentiment that nobody wants to work any more couldn't be more wrong, people just don't want to work a job that breaks their body for tick poor compensation.

Something I've noticed over the years in my field is that when the economy is in good shape, no one wants a government job.  When the economy sours, people line up for one by the dozens.

Right now, no one wants a government job.  That tells me the economy is in pretty good shape.  Just an observation.

With that being said, what’s all this “never see it again” talk?

It just seems to me that the subsequent generations overall have lost a little something that can’t be quantified that our parents and grandparents had.

They tried to give it to us and we to ours

Some live it and some don’t

I just believe the work ethic and the willingness to work isn’t what it was.
But obviously not all

It was an overall blanket statement.

Thats all

I have read that a major factor in the employment gap was the number of early retirements during Covid (I happen to be one of those folks). 2.2 million more folks took retirement than the Fed expected.

I see a lot of comments on the work ethic (or lack there of) of younger folks. I found their work ethic to be different than mine … which isn’t necessarily bad. Companies looking to hire the best and brightest need to recognize this. Those offering pay, benefits and work environments tailored towards baby boomers will continue to fail to close the employment gap. This was always going to happen. It’s just happened faster due to Covid.

I need to fish now. ?

I own a Tavern/Restaurant. Work 30+ hours a week and you will easily BRING HOME, $1250+ per week. No HSD, GED, just be sociable, work hard and follow directions. Work in the A/C in the summer, heat in the winter. I can't get people to work. Brian.

Are you in Knoxville?? Is that before or after taxes ?  Haha I would jump on that like a duck on a junebug

that’s over double what I make for half the hours

This was an issue before Covid as well. A percentage of folks refuse to work because child support and/or garnishments will take 65% of their check. They are better off drawing unemployment/disability and not having to pay those.

BRING HOME. I have a College Graduate that is an assistant manager, a really good one. He has said several times, "If I knew I could make this amount of money, doing this, I'd have never went to College". Brian.

Lot of truth to this statement.

A couple of my friends were talking about this very thing a while back.  Their biggest issue was getting the prospective employees to pass a drug test.

Sometimes printed words don’t convey true feelings. At least mine don’t.

Sorry if any of mine offended for any reason. Certainly wasn’t intended.

What's not to understand?  There are more jobs than are people looking for work.  $18/hour is gonna be a very competitive job market.  That's a few thousand less than $40k, assuming working 40 hour weeks, 52 weeks per year.  OP, your friend is gonna have to do better.  There are unskilled factory jobs here for $20/hour, plus 80 hours PTO, full benes, quarterly reviews/raises, other perks, etc.  Those guys that no showed are probably working and not lazy at all.  They're just making more somewhere else.

Oh, I dunno….maybe the highest inflation in 2 decades and the second largest bank failure ever (one of 3) or maybe the things that aren’t factored into inflation like food and fuel costs, natural gas prices doubling, the US’s debt overtaking the GNP, and on and on….

the shop where I work has been looking for a mechanic for over 2 years now. right now it's the boss and me. last year I did 90% of the jobs that came through the door. my boss is always busy with service calls, we both run the wrecker also. we have talked to only 4 guys in all that time. and not one of them would take their eyes off of their phone while trying to talk to them.it is a bad problem in this world right now. not down the road but NOW.
