I've never tried this rig but I'm going to. There's plenty of hook options and they all look quite a bit different. The V&M Smalley hook seems like the widest gap and looks really good to me. From what I'm reading you want pretty wide gap. I also like the 4x4 elite tube hook for the same reason. Or at least I like the pictures I see of them . Any advice for me?

 

Also, as a side note, what will I notice with the difference of a straight versus a sideways oriented eye?

I use secret lure stupid tubes. I use their 4/0 HD for their 4.2” normally 3/16 or their regular 3/0 1/8 or 3/16 for their 3.2”. 
If you go to their website they have plenty of videos to show you the proper way to rig.

I like the secret lures, I use the 3.7 and the 3.0 jig heads in various wiegjts.

Really like how weedless they are, great line of colors too.

Hey I watched that video! Super cool. I guess what? I'm wondering when it comes down to it is are all the stupid rig hooks kind of the same? When I go to tackle Warehouse for instance I see 99% of them looking basically the same. Then I see a couple with what seems like extra wide gaps. Also, it's possible this is just the picture because I haven't seen them in real life. Should I just grab the normal ones? Do they work just fine? Or should I try those extra wide gap ones?

When i first heard of stupid rig tubes i made some just using a ewg and mashing a splitshot weight on it. It works. I am cheap.

@detroit1 I bought these but haven't used them yet.  Seems like the same concept.

I'm cheap too. I've just texas rigged with an EWG and slid a bullet sinker inside the tube. If you use the right size sinker, it will stay in place pretty well. You can also change the action by sliding the weight around.

When I first began fishing tubes, I gave up on them in short order. I just got hung up too often and even though I could occasionally rip them free of the  weeds,that exposed hook just seemed to catch anything.  I tried T-rigging, but there was no action on the fall which Is when I did catch fish with the exposed hook jig.  I played around with an internal casting sinker and was able to get a decent spiral on the fall, When I started rigging 'stupid' style, one of the first things I tried was bringing the eye of the jig out farther back then a normal tube jig. The difference on the fall was something to behold and now I adjust the spin depending on the cover. I'll still, occasionally, use an exposed hook tube, but that is only on the rare occasion when I'm fishing deep weed edges, or gravel bottoms.

A lot of companies are making the stupid tube heads but there are only few hooks made that work. Below are listed all the hooks and sizes I pulled off Barlow's Tackle for reference. Personally I like the top two straight eye ones listed. The VMC works best on lighter line and the Gama 2014 for heavier (17lb Floro). Gama 2034 is thicker than most flippin jig hooks I use so if you want to fish tubes on 65lb braid this is your hook.

Brass eye Water Gremlin sinker shoved in the tube eye first. Texas rig how you would do any other bait just make sure to run the hook through the sinker eyelet. Hook holds the sinker in place and the bait is compact.

Let me know if you want any of these stupid heads? All the hooks fit in my spincast molds so just cover the costs of the hooks and I will make you however many you want.

I honestly buying general tube jig/weighted hooks in bulk. Tube catches fish always specially if you squirt a fish attractant gel into it, I believe if there is a bass, you'll catch them.

Buying them by 5 pond packs.
