Fishing a rip rap bank yesterday with a  ned rig , I quickly lost two bass that jumped and threw the bait . This happens a lot with neds for me. Then I switched to a tube with a jig head inserted and landed 100 per cent of the bass . The tube would slide up the line during the jumps and the fish just stayed hooked.  Am I alone on this ? Do you think Neds out fish tubes?

I got back into tubes a couple of years ago, mostly from reading through some past post here. I think I hook more fish on a tube over a Ned rig. I like the head inserted rigging also. I like the slow fall of tube baits on a light head.                                     There's an older guy near me who uses tube baits almost exclusively and catches scores of bass each year, making long cast along shorelines with them.

Thats another thing , tubes get wedged in the rocks less than Neds.

I think if one is losing a lot of fish with Neds they may be using the wrong jig.  Some Ned jigs have IMO hooks that are too small.  Might be the reason.  I use both Neds and tubes a lot and don't recognize a problem like this.

Very well could be.

I use both too.  I rarely have fish become unhooked when using either one.

I need to rethink my ned heads. What do you guys use? I've been using Matzuo  heads not intended  for Neds.

Had been using Owner Blockheads but some baits still liked to fall over - Reaction Tackle's Warlock heads seem to stand up better so I've mainly switched to those.

 

I've also done some testing for Allen (Munkin) on Ned heads he's casted up...so far they're working quite well.

I use VMC ned heads.  The VMC ones seem to be a little better shaped on the head to slide past rocks and avoid getting hung up.

 

For tubes I use Northland Tube Jigs.  They are a short shanked version.  If I am around a fair amount of weeds, I use a skip gap hook with a tube pegged with a bullet sinker.

 

I don't usually use a ned around a lot of weeds.  It constantly gets hung up.  The ones with the weed guards are crap.

My tube heads are hand poured by some guy  I made a trade with. Dont know his name . He wanted some discontinued terminal tackle "Speedo Beads" that I had .

Eagle claw makes a surprisingly good ned rig jighead imo, my hookup and land ratio is extremely high which I attribute (at least partially) to it's unique "V bend", a modified J hook bend. It has a great keeper as well as a great price, I'm surprised I've never seen it mentioned or recommended before.

I think lots of people use too heavy of gear with Ned rigs, what are you using? Too hard of hook set can also cause those small hooks to not get set well. Just a pull up and start reeling gets  the best hook set.

I use both Neds and tubes and rarely loose fish with either.

I’m using these in black and chartreuse and really like them.

When it’s snaggy, I switch to the Big TRD worm and rig Neko style with a #2 or #3 VMC Neko hook.  The Neko rig resists getting stuck in the rocks over a traditional Ned or tube head, and the VMC Neko hook up ratio is dam near 100%. 
 

The Tiny Child Rig is very snag-free as well and I don’t think I have ever lost a fish with that VMC Neko hook.

For me, Neds out fish tubes 100:1 because I never throw tubes 😛 In reality, I think the two probably fish about the same for most people. Any losses with either probably boil down to personal equipment setups and style among anglers.

Just slide it in.

Solid ned baits cast and fish better in the wind, hollow tubes fish better in the calm.

No, the trick to getting an elaztech bait over keepers is to pull it over rather than push it, hold/pinch the hook at the bend and pull the head of the bait from both sides onto the keeper, see video starting at 4:28

 

 

 

Tubes and jigworms are 90 something percent of what I fish. Most fish are stuck well in the roof of the mouth and hard to unhook when you are holding them. I’ve never purchased a true “Ned rig” because I despise the melty plastic my friends leave all over my boat. If they are so indestructible why does everyone have 500 packs of them and why are they all over my boat 😂 

 

Methinks it is because everything on the internet says throw a ned rig, and they catch a lot of fish

 

@scaleface, the one X factor in your scenario is how they eat the bait. Might have just been inhaling the tube better that day

Could be. They were choking that tube and spitting up crawdad parts. 

I'm all out of likes for today. After reading all the replies I'm convinced that bigger hooks on jig heads are needed. My Neds are the back half of Yum Dingers . I use a lot of Dingers and have a couple hundred bodies .

For sure.  The whole point of the ned to be really compact and as light as possible.  Once you start using wider gaps, longer shanks and heavier wire you're getting away from the point of the ned rig.
