I decided to order a GLX MBR 843c.  Versatile rod and should do other things pretty well too. I need that going from 20+ rods in my bass boat to 8 now in a kayak.

Best rod for poop baits? I think this one is pretty obvious.

Just wanted to clarify, I'm not really recommending this rod. I just thought it'd go with the poop baits, being a TP-1 (toilet paper) and all.   I'll see myself out now..

What’s your preferred set up for the typical 3.5 inch (approx 1/2 ounce) scat bait?

I think the rod has to be the right action for poop lures. It has to load/cast relatively heavy/compact lures right - but also sensitive enough for bottom contact, detecting slack line bites, etc.

Preferred line too?

100%.  I use the P5 FMJ.  reel is a Bantam, loaded with 14lb sniper.  the casting distance and accuracy is nuts.  I fished it on the Delta and I would keep my kayak way back and fling it towards cover.  far casts, so the fish don't see me.  I was killing them.  the aggressive "THUMP" and I could jam the 5/0 hook home with a hook-set worthy of a YouTube vid.  so fun.

my friend, "Hey give me one of those baits.."

my friend earlier."what kind of ridiculous bait is that?!!!"

Had almost this exact experience…

Bought a pack when they were first released kind of thinking it was more gimmick than anything.  Showed a couple different guys that fished in my boat, they laughed, but we never used it.

Then one day after a couple of slow hours on the water, I tied one on and cast it a country mile onto a known gravel/chunk rock point. Watched the line slowly sink for about 5 seconds - then THUMP - the line went tight and reeled in a 20 incher.  First cast!!

My friend who had scoffed at the bait was like - “No you didn’t, that “*%#^” doesn’t work!” Reeled it in and showed him what was down the fishes gullet and he couldn’t believe it. Told him I’d sell one turd to him for $20, he had some choice words for me..

I took a break from fishing and I come back to people fishing with poop baits. What’s next? 😂

I tried it on an Xtasy 723c and it wasn’t powerful enough. Sent an email to Gary and he said at least a 4 power, and he personally would use a 5 power.

Yeah I agree on a 5 power. That's only because it's a dobyns. My sierra is a 5 power and feels like most mh rods.

You’re right - it shows the variance in weight ratings between rod manufacturers - where Dobyns says a 5 power and Loomis says 3, and the rest of the industry it’s a 4.

There's also something special in how the dobyns tips react and cast that I really like.it makes them really accurate.

Exactly!  Does anyone actually believe that rod selection is this specific/difficult/challenging?

I'm just here to say that Ugly Stik could make a "S--- Stik" and I think that would actually sell decently

LoL.  I got a old school 6' 0 S--- Stik out in my shed. Medium casting, 8-20lb line that will work great for it.

I know it, since the industry started this technique specific labeling it has totally confused a whole bunch of fishermen.. totally unnecessary in my opinion. I mean I’m the guy that threw 1/2 oz rattletraps on a 6’6” heavy fast Lews laser speed stick and it was never ever a problem for me but according to the rod manufacturers 🤦

Right, not only technique specific, but species specific.  There are some techniques that are best done with certain rods, but most of today's rods are a lot more versatile than many give credit for.  Just get a rod that feels good and go fishing.

Ok so seriously, what brands/models of bait are we specifically talking about?

Always been curious about the 893… besides scat lures, how does it do dragging 1/2 oz football jigs or is 3/8 it’s top end?

893 is 3/16-5/8 rated.

I really don't think with dragging that an 1/8th of an ounce is going even be noticeable.  I'm trying to be polite, but this whole this is incredible.

The correction is 50% higher lure rating being debated. No difference between fishing T-rigged worms, creatures or silly named soft plastics regarding the rod.

Agree!

The Fish Arrow Heavy Poop is a good one at 5/8 oz. The Deps Cover Scat is another at 7/16 oz. And they are dead weight lures, a unique chunk to match to rod power.
