Aaron Martens quote about fluo & palomar knots

Featured Replies

I was reading Bassin Mag. yesterday and I come across a quote in a artical that was interesting.  The artical was Pitching & Flipping Tricks by Margie Anderson.  In the artical it was talking about line and tackle.

There was a quote from Aaron Martens   "First of all, no matter what anybody tells you, the Palomar knot is the worst knot in the world to use with fluorocarbon line," Martens says. "It breaks."

I was just wondering what everyone thought about this?  Has anyone found this to be true?

I would disagree with this statement.........I have used a palomar almost exclusively with all my lines including fluro, and I have not had a problem at all...........Just my .02........... ;D

I agree with you I just couldn't believe what I was reading. I remember KVD saying on one of his shows that he uses a palomar knot on everything except topwater.

Time is counting down till the SQT good luck!!

All I use is the palomar knot and i have never had a problem.

The only time I do not use a Palomar Knot is when tying big treble hooks lures and that is only because they are cumbersome. I do not recall this knot ever failing.

If you've lived through the life cycle of the Palomar knot,

you'll remember it skyrocketing to fame about 20 or 30 years ago, but then it fell from grace.

Going full circle, the palomar knot has made a comeback of sorts instigated by the Super Line manufacturers.

I've stayed the course with the Uni-knot, so I kind of missed the show :)

I have never had a polomar knot fail. I use them all the time and use them with Yozuri Hybrid when flipping ( I use it as a leader on braid) and have never had it fail.

I'd like to know what knot he uses.  8-) I've had problems with flouros and palomars, and I am anal about my knots. Co-polymers seem to hold much better, but flouros need a uni or a double palomar to work right.

San Diago Jam Knot is all I can say.

I have been fooling aroud with that knot, too. Yep, I like it and it's pretty!

I have had problems with fluoro and the palomar knot when flippin'. I use the palomar knot for other applications with fluoro, but i think on those super-hard, close-range hook sets, the fluoro tends cuts itself when tied in a palomar because it doesn't stretch like mono.

never had a problem with a palomar knot and fluoro, make sure that line is wet so you don't burn it while sinching it.  Love that knot

i'm going out on a limb here.it not the knot it's the flouro line.any line that has that much problem holding knots ain't worth using imho!!!

I will say it again San Diago Jam Knot.

Be perpared to like like a panda bear with a chubby but what potenail.

My friend showed me a knot when I first got into fishing he called it the "G Knot" been using it ever since I just googled it and cant seem to find any instructions for it, its very similar to a Palomar knot and I have great luck with it.

Look, Im sorry but for the life of me I can't figure out what the @#*$ that means!?!?!!    ;D

I don't know what he's talking about. If you lube the knot and pull it down slowly, you'll have no problems with a palomar on flouro. I don't.

I got the part about the bear and the chubby, I just didn't get "potenail". Word gives these a possible corrections; potential, pot nail, toenail and paternal. Maybe ponytail. I don't understand?

Cheers,

GK

Never had a problem with a palomar knot.

Just the fact that Aron Martins buts everything on the line tells me that I need to no this knot. And it is the hardest knot I've tryed to perfect. If you look at the diagram you will see the knots advantage. If you are happy with your knot just keep donating to the Aron Martins of the world.

Aaron Martens isn't the only one who doesn't recommend a palomar on flouro.Seaguar has knot instruction for flouro with every spool you buy.The palomar is not recommended.I have been told by a few anglers not to use it with flouro.

Fluro doesnt have much strength for bending i heard if it gets a kink in the line it breaks really easy

I even stopped using fluorocarbon for leaders, that stuff is kinkier than titanium wire puke1.gif

agreed!!

What was that about being prepared like a panda bear with a chubby?

I have heard a few places that when using a palomar knot with floro the line cuts into itself. I think it might have said it in the book that came in my berkley vanish, but i threw it out so i dont know for sure.
