My knot repertoire.

Featured Replies

I just learned another knot, the Kreh knot, for a loop knot. I got to thinking about it though and I thought, maybe I'm missing out on an amazing knot.

For years I used the improved clinch knot. But occasionally I would have a failure where the knot would twist and come lose. I learned the Trilene knot and I am very happy with it. It works with braid, it works with anything I've tried.

Braid being mentioned, I do use braid, but I use 93% mono. I do not use fluoro, but I will eventually get around to trying it.

Currently the knots I know are:

Improved clinch knot

Trilene knot

Palomar knot

Uni to uni

Kreh Loop Knot

So what am I lacking?

What does everyone else use?

I use a palomar and improved clinch for line to lure, and an alberto (improved albright) for braid-to-leader.

Arbor knot for line to spool, and sometimes double uni to tie flouro mainline to mono backing.

Original braid knot.( double line clinch).

Salt water

Perfection loop knot, live bait.

SDJ knot most lures.

Bimini twist double line loop knot

I didn't know that Tom, the one I have learned is the Kreh Loop Knot. Thank you for sharing what you use though.

I like a double pitzen.  I used to use a Palomar as it was a good knot.  But I would end up having the occasional tie that would break when I tested it.  Even being fully careful about not crossing line, proper wetting, proper snugging, etc I would still get them.  The uni to uni for leader to braid was the same for me.  I swapped to the double pitzen for mono and fluoro knots and have not had a single knot break.  On leader to braid I went to an Alberto.  Again, no issues.

I’ll still tie an improved clinch if I’m fishing light line bait for trout just because it is so easy to tie onto a single #10 hook.  I’ll tie a trilene knot on spinning rods because I don’t want to waste the tag end lengths that I’d lose on a palomar or pitzen.  I’ll tie a snell knot for straight worm hooks when flipping but that’s just so the knot isn’t chewing up the plastic.

Line to lure…Pitzen enough said.

My fishing knots have become so second-nature that I don’t even remember the names of them besides the clinch and palomar knots. Couldn’t tell you how or what knot I use for leaders. It’s all muscle memory, zero brain memory.

Along with the palomar and Lefty Kreh I use the FG at home for leader to braid and triple surgeons or Alberto when I'm out fishing.

Clinch and improved clinch, alberto, snell, blood, surgeons, t knot, dropper,, that about covers it for me.

I’ve been using the fishin fool for my terminal knot for a couple of years now and I really like it. Connector knot is still a uni to uni with 14 wraps on the braid and 7 wraps on the mono. Learned that from Aaron Martens videos. My loop knot is the one that runs through the eye and doubles back then wrap the lure three times through the loop. I don’t know what it’s called.

I use a palomar or sometimes a hasty improved clinch. For leaders I tried a uni to uni connection knot and that was an epic failure. I switched to the FG and it has been very good to me. With the FG, I just have to keep a close eye on the line ends fraying. Lighter line is better. A doubled improved clinch knot is overall the strongest knot I’ve used, but it is messy and big with three tag ends. The palomar comes quite close. With circle hooks for catfish or flipping hooks, I will tie a version of the snell knot. That’s about all I use.

Interesting replies. The Pitzen knot looks easy enough, might just be the stuff when it's windy. I could see being able to tie it in the dark too if I had to.

Palomar for tying to lures and uni to uni for leader knots are my two main knots and I really haven't had many issues.

I am working on getting comfortable with the FG, but still struggle with it. Getting better though!

Palomar for braid.

Clinch or Kreh Loop for mono depending on the lure.

FG for braid to leader.

Never really had any problems.

For small dia lines I use the Red Phillips knot, works great on rods with micro guides.

Palomar

trilene

Alberto

I need to learn a good loop knot

Just in my short time using the Kreh loop knot, I am comfortable with it and have caught several fish when using it; granted, small fish. It gives a great action to rapalas and ratLtraps. I would have added a split ring to the rapalas in the past.
