The de minimis rule still applies to all countries except China and Hong Kong. So even if/when the reciprocal tariffs go into effect, as long as you keep your orders from Japan under $800 you should be good.

Please correct me if I’m wrong.

That's a really good questions, As a Digitaka shopper I really hope that's the case.

After asking ChatGPT a series of questions regarding tariffs, and projections over the next six months, I asked it this- "Taking all of this into consideration, is it best to buy fishing tackle direct

  • Just keep in mind this thread is about potential extra fees and costs when ordering tackle from other countries.  This is NOT a discussion about tariffs, the economy, or inflation.

I just need to say that threads like this make it extremely difficult to follow the forum guidelines but so far so good. 😆

There was a pretty good discussion of the intersection of the fishing industry and the tariffs on one of the fishing podcasts recently. Probably tackle talk. Their source was talking to tackle manufacturers on a no-names basis.

Great to know about de minimus only being china for now!

Any chance you could give the clif notes as to what was said on the podcast? I’d really appreciate it!

Many of the manufacturers source from all over the world, and their approach isn't going to be raising the price on just a few things, it'll be a smaller price raise across the board. So some items won't really be profitable but others will have extra profit. The example they used was (when the 145 tariffs were on) that soft plastics would cost a bunch more than a spinnerbait.

And on top of that there are mixed costs depending on how much they already had in stock at the old price.

Last item was some worry that some of the bigger brands might use it as an excuse to just jack pricing way out of proportion. No data here, just concern.

Well hopefully since an agreement was reached with China manufacturers can hold off on price increases. I guess we’ll see!

My daughter just made a purchase from Japan. She ordered two pairs of pants and two shirts. It was shipped via DHL. She was charged $30 for shipping and when it arrived to the US she was charged $90 in import fees. Her purchase was $180 without the fees and shipping. It came out to $300. I don't understand this.

Just last week I purchased a batch of stuff from JLS, $85. I was not charged any extra fees.

It depends where the shirts and pants are made. Look on the tag.

No tariff on my Vanquish from JLS.

Same, just purchased on 5/12.

Via FedEx which might be the difference.

That could be it. My daughter's package was shipped DHL.

Seems correct. I used the calculator and got $288.

This is still showing the original tariff rates. Tariffs have been paused so Japan should only be 10% not 24%. This stuff is too confusing for me.

the tariff department keeps rescinding and "scinding".   a moving target.    that's all I'll say about it.

my friend leaves for Japan Monday.  he is bringing back swimbaits that are killing it over here, but impossible to get at a regular price.   and some reels.

I leave for Japan November.  I'll shop more then.

@FishTank how much was the total order? If the order was under $800 it would be subject to de minimus and shouldn’t be charged anything extra.

Either the total order was over $800, or it originated from China or at least customs mistakenly believes that.

Bottom line, nothing under $800 is impacted by any extra fees unless it’s from China/Hong Kong.

It was shipped from Japan (Tokyo) and the clothing was custom made in Japan. It was as I said above $180 plus $30 shipping. She was charged $90 by DHL for import fees paid to the US Treasury.  Once paid, the package was released and dropped off the next day.

I have read and what you posted above and she was told that does not apply any longer. The 24% calculated in @RRocket post is accurate.  There was an additional misc. fee of around $12. The only thing my daughter could think of that made sense was Indiana sales tax was also collected.

Also, we are struggling with this in our shipping department at where I work. I am not sure what the answer is but when I get back from vacation, I am asking our DHL rep.

Who told you de minimis no longer applies? I think someone at customs messed up.

Edit: I’ve been digging into this more and it seems to be a DHL problem. If you do some research on google you’ll see a lot of people having the same issue but only with DHL.

DHL and the place my daughter purchased from.

Where I work, we started having issues Monday of last week.  Orders were coming in from Japan, Canada, and Poland with extra fees but not all. Some small parts had it and some big stuff didn't.  It made no sense.  Not my area at work but I heard we switched to a different carrier and we suspended free shipping to and from Canada.  I'll try find out more when I get back from vacation.

How long did the package take to get to you? Customs has been charging $30 a day for “storing” packages.

I can’t find anything regarding de minimis being revoked. Other people have had orders delivered the past week with no extra charges.

I’ve spent way more time researching this than I should have but to me, this looks like a DHL/customs mistake. We’re all human and we all make mistakes. I’m sure customs is up to their eyebrows in packages right now.

Hope you get it sorted out. If you don’t mind, I’d appreciate it if you could post what you find out. I’m very curious as to what’s going on.

I have ordered from JLS and no extra charges. I think this has to do with DHL but not sure why.

Ordered a Steez RC last week from JLS.  Shipping was like $25.  No extra charges.  Ordered a limited Zillion and a few baits from Backlash Tackle (also in japan), and they charged me $40 shipping, and now my package is stuck in clearance.  I'm concerned.

It's still stuck in memphis...for over a week now.  I'm wondering how they have the space to hold all these packages.  I'm thinking they might be demanding money from the shop to get my package moving.

What the heck, have you tried contacting FedEx?

I'd be highly annoyed.
