Why is Shimano allergic to Limited Edition reels with color?

Featured Replies

I have been wondering for some time on how is it that Daiwa released so many limited edition reels with a bunch of color, but Shimano has always ignored it, and only releases the plain jane reels since forever. There's no chance that people wouldn't be interested in a yellow 24 Met DC, or a chameleon green Curado. It only makes sense, but they're ignoring it like different colors of paint don't exist.

I find it refreshing when a company doesn’t market something to me that has nothing to do with catching fish.

I’ll stick with my plain jane Vanford and my Orvis Battenkill click and pawl (no drag) reels.

Having less options is not refreshing, it's limiting.

That reel does look cool @ABU is overpriced

I'm just more of a function over style kind of guy. All of my casting reels are old Citica or Curado's from Shimano. I like them for the feel and function...don't care that they are all old-school silver or green.

Just ordered some new rain bibs and a jacket...went with black for both.

Those white or bright colored fishing rods look neat...but just not something I am in to.

To each his own. I'm sure if rod and reel manufacturers thought they could make an extra buck here or there, they would (and will) come out with new colors.

Tight lines friend!

If you're one of those people that think your reel should match your shoes then different color reels certainly give you more fashion options.  😆

Cue @J Francho for the fashion match post. 😁

I can't do bright white or neon green fishing rods either lol, or the purple color of the Mojo bass etc

I'm old school lol I like silver reels or even black and gold ones.  but not neon green or bright yellow

I can't tell you what color any of my reels are. Probably black or gray or silver.

Okay, my two original series Baitrunner reels are most certainly all black, but I've had those for 40 years or so.

Anybody think a bright yellow reel might spook a 10# bass into jumping and thrashing about when you get it to the side of the boat?

Could not care what my reels lol like as long as they are black or dark silver. I have. White reel or two. And don’t care for them. To me bass fishing isn’t a style contest. They are tools of the trade just like my tools at work. I don’t mind the blue or red accents. But just can’t stand the bright awful colored stuff. That’s just me though.

I have only two reels that aren't black or silver (I got a couple bright silvers in addition to the dark silvers)

Those are my President XT SE that I got from BPS - $100 reels that were on special for $50. They're dark red...almost maroon...so they're not 'eye-bleed' like some reels I've seen....and they're going to be gifted to the adoptive grandson - so they won't be in my inventory for much longer.

I can’t answer the question but am glad that they are because I am also.

You look at this page, and it's crazy how far ahead daiwa is when it comes to offering style that doesn't shy away from offering nothing but silver, black and red anodyzed accents.

I like the color black, always have.

Probably 'says' something about me but whatever.

Where there's some color associated with my casting gear,

my reels are not a part of that.

Boat, Motor & Truck follow suit as well.

Shimano already makes jewelry.  Daiwa severely needs to bring out an updated Millionaire and Ryoga.  Round reels have that old money look to them.  Low profiles look like electric shavers.

And bicycle derailleurs - which are also pretty much only offered in black and silver....gotta go 3rd party to get some 'bling' for them.

We can't be comparing the color of a derailleur to a baitcaster lol. If you want to compare bikes to reels, do so with bike frames, and you will quickly notice that there are a ton of colors.

As both a Shimano and Daiwa fan, it is clear to me when it comes to customizing and limited edition runs Daiwa has the upper hand. All be it, I don't think Daiwa has a reel that compares to the Conquest but they do have some really good limited run reels that are for fans and enthusiasts.

I think Shimano has tried but come up short with their limited edition reels. I have one, the Metanium Mg V2. It's not very enthusiast oriented but still a nice reel. Others seem to be collector items.

On the other hand, I really don't care that Shimano doesn't have limited edition reels. What they have, is fine by me.  I would prefer variants (Metanium Shallow Edition, Conquest 30, SLX XT, Curado 70, etc) over limited editions anyway. Parts are easier to get and I don't tend to worry about using it as much if something bad were to happen.

With all that said, I really like my limited edition Steez SV TW 1000S Shallow Spool. This reel is just a blast to fish and has some serious power. I would take a bunch of these reels and go to town if I could justify it.

Fishing 13 Fishing reels for 9 years has taught me to not fall for that fancy looking stuff. It's all marketing. I don't know if y'all noticed this; When 13 Fishing came out with the cool color reels, all other brands except Shimano and Daiwa followed suit. There's a reason for that... The Japanese care about functionality rather than having a flashy reel.

I will admit though, I didn't know Daiwa had those limited edition reels like that.

Not a fan of white rods or reels although I was a fan of the white Chronarch I had, but not because of its color.  Had a silver rod.  Didn't care for the color.  Like black or dark gray for rods, but don't mind color accents at all.  AFAIC, I think my Limited Edition Gen1 Tatula is one of the nicest looking reels I own.  Definitely not a fan of the red/black Gen2 Tatula CT.

Hate lime green and yellow rods.  Like the blue of my Aetos.  Especially when the sun is out.  Rather have a black reel than a silver reel, but own several silver reels because that was the only color you could get them in.  Color doesn't seem to hurt performance...only my idea of what looks good.  :teeth:

Current masthead photo on Headhunters "Japan Underground" website.

Limited edition Isuzu DD310 in Headhunters color and marking.  Sorry, no clutch A/R or drag.  And something you haven't seen in awhile - it has a feed clicker.

L/E Isuzu is already redundant.

Always been a favorite, Bright River variant of Isuzu BC421 with bakelite side plates - this one does have clutch, A/R and drag.

And of course, Megabass Pagani variant of Isuzu BC520X (high speed, drag stack, and IAR roller bearing).
