Top Water lures for spinning setups

Featured Replies

Okay, so I’m going to try my hand at kayak fishing and I don’t really want to bring my big casting setups with until I get my sea legs 😆. That leaves me with spinning rod setups, I know I want a drop shot rod for one setup, I have a 7ft (which is as long as I want to go on a kayak for me personally) MH/F that I was thinking for Texas rigs and I have a 7ft medium setup I’m thinking for top water. I have come up with a couple small top water lures, a smaller popper and a Rapala Skitterwalk but what other options are there for a medium spinning setup?

Crank baits up to about a XD 3 size? Jerkbait, Smallish soft plastic swim baits.... Bout anything you want to throw from about 3/16-3/4 oz.

Yup, kinda’ looking specifically for top water, I have plenty of ideas for the other two rod setups 😀

Top water, Tiny Torpedo, Chug Bug, floating Rapala minnow? Maybe tie on one of the clear bubble floats and some of the fly rod poppers?  Small frog baits?

Duo Realis Shinmushi and Koshinmushi are tough to beat for a small/light topwater.

My son has one of those Lunkerhunt spiders that he fishes on spinning gear and actually does pretty good with it.

Live Target makes some small frogs that are great on spinning rods.

Strike king Bitsy Dawg (has been on clearance at SW)

OG floating Rapala

Rebel - pretty much everything but I'm partial to the Pop-R

Jitterbug is easy to work sitting down, and deadly. Torpedo or a devil's horse would be useful too.

A weightless lizard does good for topwater. Unless it's floating, you have to keep it moving, but it doesn't take much to keep it up.

Rapala Skitter Pop (SP-7), Any color. Thank me later.

Pop R , Tony Torpedo

Kind of same as a baitcasting set up MH imo. I guess main difference is the pound test you have on so that eliminates hollow body frogs in cover but I would be confident throwing a standard walking bait 100mm on spinning gear if needed.

I prefer spinning for throwing poppers and smaller prop baits.

The devils horse is super light so that can be thrown on spinning gear. Same with the Red Fin as a big wake bait since super light....Also can throw all the Rapala floating minnow line.

I would say the Rapala F-9 Floater floating jerkbait is probably my favorite to throw if just looking to get bit.

If you wanna go fancy, the karashi is a blast.

Don't forget the Whopper Plopper !

My personal favorite smaller size top water is Zip n Ziggy Baby Bass color. Works out of the box, good quality hooks and walks by itself nothing special needed.

I fish this 7 ft M for popper and walkers.

Something I even catch a few.

I think with that setup you can throw all the topwater except maybe the heavier stuff like a full sized plopper or walking bait.

anything 1/2 oz is fair game.

you dont mention line.  braid?  I hope so.  I throw a 1/2 and smaller popper. the megabass popX and popmax on spinning gear.  I like the distance and..okay I like the distance with the spinning.

EDIT.  you're finding your thing...I take it back.  throw anything you want and hope to work.  what actually works and you like, will illuminate itself fairly quickly.  hahahha
