What lire was it? That doesn’t sound right.

The Egg wakebait.  This spring it was $4.99, myself and 3 friends each bought one.  Recently it was $5.99 and jumped to $7.99, only available for in-store purchases since they sold out in the spring and re-stocked.  There was a discussion on this lure a short while back on Bass Resource.

Thanks. I’m the one that started the discussion. I bought 35 in my local BPS. The price was all over the place though. It didn’t have anything to do with tarrif pricing though. At my local BPS in Huntsville, they were (and still are) $5.99. In Chattanooga, they were $4.99. In Prattville, AL (Montgomery area), they were $5.99. In Leeds, AL (Birmingham area), they were $6.99. I asked different store managers why the different prices and they replied that they didn’t know. I asked about tariffs specifically and they all said no, that these were repackaged lures with the new BPS packaging. I had several at my BPS price matched to the price at Chattanooga.

If they raise prices on tackle, I just won't buy anymore. Sorry monkey, you are off my back. Like most of us, I have more lures than I could ever use anyhow.

Duh

Of course the little guy is gonna pay it.
If a company incurred additional costs of any kind they raise prices to offset their increase.

That doesn’t require a BS in anything, being on this earth for over 6 decades is all you need to know about basic economic principles. 😁

Despite Tariffs I’ve ordered a $300.00 reel this very day,(Tackle warehouse) you either suck it up or not. I don’t want to pay more & companies don’t want to pay more.

I heard that the bait monkey 🐒 is in a deep state of depression...... perhaps even suicidal. 😁

I’m extremely bummed that de minimis is now non existent for all countries. Order a reel from Japan and now you’ll have to pay $80 in duties.

All right so maybe I’m an idiot and I’m reading this wrong but where is everyone coming up with this $80.00 addition?  If I buy a $300.00 reel the 15% tariff costs me an extra $45.00 which correct my math is almost 1/2 of $80.00. And I’m reading this directly from my e-mail from Asian Portal who said “may be subject to a IMG_5011.png.7c41f48220b42f9ef4e5180165f21cfc.png15% tariff even if it’s less than $800.00” that to me reads even they aren’t sure what’s going to happen. I mean the world isn’t going to end because we can no longer take advantage of buying overseas. Oh and by the way I’m a Union truck driver and I am in no way shape or form getting rich doing it but I’ll still find a way to fish even if the tariff’s go through albeit maybe not buying higher end gear but I think there have been plenty of threads discussing how you can still catch fish with budget gear on this site.

The BPS store I was referring to is in St. Louis.

The $80 addition everyone's talking about is when the de minimis exemption ends, which is on the 29th of this month. So until then it's the same as always and no additional fees added.

At what point does it matter for most people? $15 bag of Senkos? $20 Strike King cranks? Buying a reel for $300 isn’t big money these days, but when the price of what used to be 5-7 bags of plastics doubles a lot of folks will feel the crunch.

In the end if companies don’t lower prices or eat into their margins they will sell less product. When they sell less they react negatively to the consumer. BPS has been around for 60 years but their entire business now is based on gouging fishermen on knock offs. If that dries up where do they stay in the black?

Are more mom and pop shops going to die over the next 3 years? The reality is tariffs are negative pressure on consumers who have already been squeezed by inflation. Sooner or later the end result is companies going under.

I saw a title of a post on another forum a month or so ago. “What does a consumer based economy do once most of the consumers are broke?”

Speak for yourself - being on a fixed income, $300 is WAY over my budget for a reel. Most I've paid for a reel is $130 for a JDM Tatula 100 and that was after a bit of hemming and hawing.

Given the way tariffs are going, I'm gonna be priced out of replenishing stock or getting anything new.

This is the unfortunate reality. The big names will be able to ride out this wave and absorb some costs to get them through if necessary. Mom and pop shops don't have that luxury. Tackle stores have already been slowly closing over the years and this is just another blow to an already tough industry to be in.

It's definitely a good time to shop local and show support if you can afford to do so.

Yuuup.

I part time at a mom and pop store for a different hobby and the tariffs are killing them.

Paint comes from Japan or Spain, though there are a couple US companies now. 1/72 comes from England or the Ukraine. Your best enamel weathering products? Spain. 28mm wargaming? UK. Not even going to start on scale model kits.

You can't just "BUY USA" when the option doesn't exist.

I didn’t mean for you personally I meant in general reels can reach upwards of $700 for freshwater and $1200 for salt.

If I came across as a jerk I apologize, it wasn’t my intent.

Many of us are stuck between a rock and a hard place financially because of a myriad of reasons. I know a lot of friends in the tech and government fields have recently lost their jobs and they have to make financial choices they didn’t have too.

No definitely not. Definitely.

Please buy more.

Interesting, understand I am in no way saying that you, or your friend, are wrong. Just speaking about my experience this past Friday.

I called BPS to place an order for several items. I had already looked up the items to get the correct sku number and checked the price against the one given in my BPS fishing master catalog, they matched. I never even thought about the tariffs. If I want something and have the money to pay for it, I’m getting it. Anyway, I called 1-800-basspro and placed my order, the customer service associate read back everything to me including the price which matched the catalog and online pricing that I had looked up.

And, yes I always order by phone, speaking to a real person (preferably an American) when possible. I guess I’m old school.

here is the actual text of the EO. A country with tariffs under 16% (Japan is 15%) will be charged $80.

I think it’s up the the carrier to choose wether to charge the flat fee or the actual tariff rate. We’ll just have to wait and see.

(b)  A duty equal to the effective IEEPA tariff rate applicable to the country of origin of the product shall be assessed on the value of each dutiable postal item (package) containing goods entered for consumption.

(c)  A specific duty shall be assessed on each package containing goods entered for consumption, based on the effective IEEPA tariff rate applicable to the country of origin of the product as follows:

(i)    Countries with an effective IEEPA tariff rate of less than 16 percent:  $80 per item;

(ii)   Countries with an effective IEEPA tariff rate between 16 and 25 percent (inclusive):  $160 per item; and

(iii)  Countries with an effective IEEPA rate above 25 percent:  $200 per item.

Just placed an order yesterday.

With their holiday, it’s going to be cutting it close I bet.

We will see.

I was getting ready to place an order myself but I might hold off. I emailed a few sites including JLS. We will see.

If I can get it in time, I am going to stock up (baits, lures, line and terminal) and be done with it.

Most of the stuff I am after is about half the cost of what is here. That's a lot of nickels.

I'm curious what the prices are going to be at the source.  if I remember my 8th grade economics class correctly;  the cost of tariffs are always passed to the consumer.  it is supposed to.

makes the domestic produced competitive products look better cost wise by comparison..

trouble starts if there is no domestic product, or very little. :D   like coffee.  come on!!  coffee I predict will get stupid.  or the grass piece.  hahahahah...

I think it will be more expensive in Japan as well.

I was just informed by a well known distributor that Shimano products will increase 22% tomorrow, 8/18/25.  On line orders placed today will not be increased.

Wasn’t the shimano price increase posted weeks ago?
