Best rod to throw a 1/2 oz bladed jig on?

Featured Replies

Currently using a 7’2” Medium-Heavy/Moderate Fast Victory. I have it spooled with 14 lb mono as it doubles as my topwater rod.

Am I at a disadvantage with this setup in regard to hooksetting power being moderate fast vs fast + the stretch of mono vs fluro/braid?

Wondering if I need a dedicated rod for this application or if I can continue using this?

I use that exact rod for bladed jigs. I use 15# Fluoro

Great rod. Would I dramatically increase hooksetting power w fluoro? I really throw topwater a lot so I’d like to be able to use it for both.

Good to go.

No need for fluoro?

If it’s doubling as your top water stik, run good quality mono.

Anything superior to 14 lb Trilene

If its also for topwater than I would definitely use mono.

You are fine with a decent quality mono or maybe copoly for chatterbaits. I'd recommend Sufix Siege if you need a good mono.

If it has to throw a chatter and topwater, mono or braid are your only options. I'm partial to fluoro for my chatters, but I have a dedicated rod for it. I'd be worried about being able to easily clear grass with the combo of a Mod Fast and the stretch of mono, but if you're able to do that then no need to change.

A fresh spool of fluoro will have more stretch than most mono contrary to popular belief.

If anything, the combination of MH/MF, grass and mono or fluoro raises the most concerns, where a MH/F would probably work better for hooksets, but people like the MF for rebounding after snagging grass to trigger bites. If you keep it moving, it should be okay.

The answer to "Best rod to throw a 1/2 oz bladed jig on?" will be a hundred different rods.

Your rod and line combo are fine. I have thrown bladed jigs on MH/XF jig rod paired with 40lb braid, MH/XF spinning rods with 20lb braid, MH/F graphite rod with both braid and mono, and currently throw them on a MH/MF glass rod with 15lb mono. There is no worry about hook setting power as long as you set your drag properly and are reeling/sweeping into the fish.

No reason at all to change there.

The difference in mono and fluoro for hookset is going to be so minimal that you wouldn’t really notice it (unless you are buying some REALLY bad mono).

To be perfectly honest, I like a little slower tip for a bladed jig than conventional wisdom dictates. I’ve had much better numbers on a “reel/sweep” hookset than I have trying to cross their eyes.

Is there a superior mono to Trilene XL for hooksetting power? Don’t they make “floating” fluoro?

Trilene XL is the thinner diameter mono, so yes there are many stronger mono variants. Big Game and Trilene XT are two from Berkley. I like Sufix Siege, and I think that's roughly what you're looking for.

By floating fluoro, you might mean copoly line which is a hybrid of mono and fluoro. Yo Zuri hybrid is a good, rugged copoly, but note that the 15lb is the diameter of basically other brands fattest 17lb mono as well for some reason, but the others are similar.

I personally use Izorline XXX for chatters, in the 14lb flavor. McCoy, Maxima, Sufix and Gamma are solid choices in copoly/mono as well.

I've heard people say good things about Sunline Natural, but haven't tried it myself. I only use mono on one spooks and poppers and Big Game has worked just fine for that.

If you're switching line, I think it would be worthwhile to test out braid. Works great with chatterbaits- especially on a slower rod. Add a couple bobber stops ahead of the knot on your treble-hooked topwaters and you won't have too many issues with the braid wrapping your hooks.

I've tried the Yo Zuri Hybrid on topwaters and find it does still sink more than mono. P Line Topwater is the only copoly I've seen stay on top as well as mono.

Oh I thought it floated, been a while since I used it.

Regardless, Sufix Siege is my recommendation. A good strong mono that handles well.

I'm one of those guys.  I love supernatural.  It is perfect for my preferences and how I fish.

Honestly, if you like the Trilene and its handling, stay with it. No sense in screwing your own rhythms up by switching to an unfamiliar line unless that is your goal and/or a necessity.

Hell, I should be giving the XL a chance, as my boat was in a Phoenix market Trilene commercial in 1989.

Sufix advance is a decent compromise. Mono but with some HDPE fibers - notably less stress.

If it ain't broke...

I tried several graphite and composite/glass rods and settled on an Alpha Angler “Chatterbound” rod and 17 lb Tatsu. Awesome set up!

For Topwater and bladed jigs I use braid with a mono leader.

My bladed jig rod is 7’4” MH modfast
