Paddletail Jigheads?

Featured Replies

I am wanting to get into trying paddletail grubs. You know, those 3"-4" Keitech boottail swimbaits. My local stores are pretty limited on jigheads made for these. I will likely buy whatever they have just to test it out, but then make a purchase online for them.

What jigheads does everyone like?

Dirty jigs guppyhead is popular. Honestly I normally use some ballheads I pour myself on better hooks.

It depends on the application. In weeds, you'll want something with a weed guard, but for swimming over the tops of submerged weeds or any assortment of presentations, I rely on a ball head with not too long of a hook shank. You don't want to impede the tail action with a hook that sits too far back toward the tail. The last option is an underspin, which I have been using more frequently over the last two season.

Big Bite Baits swimbait head is fairly inexpensive and fits the bill for longer baits and Cumberland Pro offers standard size and finesse ball heads along with underspins. Both company's offerings have keepers that won't tear up your baits. For longevity, I recommend staying away from jigs that use keepers that are molded onto the hookshank.

Susquehanna Tackle has their in house round ball jig heads, SFTbighook, and they are great.  Start with the ten pack and if you like them, they offer a 100 pack.

Just a 1/4 oz ball head.

Dirty Jigs guppy heads for me.

Eagle Claw ball heads are what I use on my little paddle tails. I sharpen each hook as they come out of the pack and bend them out a hair. They’re light wire and that’s a plus for me, because I like fishing with light line.

I pretty much only throw Keitechs on an underspin anymore, but a plain old ball head works just fine.

A 3” Keitech on a 1/4 oz football head can be a killer on riprap banks, popping it off the bottom followed by a fairly long pause.

I buy what's on sale (ball head, darter etc. ) and focus on type of hook & size. Love a lighter jig heads with bigger hook & I prefer companies like Owner, Gamakatsu, Sixth Sense, DOA, and VMC (certain ones).

I'm old school and just throw them on round ball heads. I think I actually get bit less when I use "swim bait " heads. Unscientific of course.

Whatever you do, wherever you go, never use one of those baits (sans jighead) on a Carolina rig. Unless you want to catch fish.

Or a drop shot. Never.

To answer the original question,  I use ball heads with Gamakatsus or the new finesse swimbait head from do-it.
