If you had a bass boat, FFS, SpotLock, and a bag of chips, do you think you'd catch more?

Yes I would catch many more big bass from my favorient lake with a boat the latest technology and time to learn how to use it.  I plan on upgrading the day I win the lotto.  Until then I will have to keep casting blind out of  my kayak.  If anyone wants to supply the boat, and FFS, I will take you to my big bass lake in Mexico.  I know it sounds crazy, but it never hurts to ask.

  • I just returned from my two-hour fishing trip. Yeah, it was frosty, but I caught a fatty too. Not as fat and long as your profile pic bass, but she still stretched my string!

  • I'd love to have SpotLock on Bass Trek...it'd probably help me so much. Right now, I have to work the TM manually to keep an approximate position.   FFS - na....IMO it's cheating.

I have a boat, FFS, spot lock, and several bags of chips (although not all together). I believe I catch more fish because of the spot lock than I do the FFS. I thought the FFS was cheating, until I go

While I agree that access to bigger fish can be a real plus when fishing from a boat.

However, the transition from being bank-bound to putting the puzzle pieces together on the vastness of big water can be both a blessing & a curse.

As indicated by many threads & posts on the subject, the learning curve, although a ton of fun,

it can be a bit daunting.

This is particularly true during the initial year or two.

There is absolutely an adjustment period for learning to boat fish, and learning to juggle the use of the trolling motor at the same time. It kinda weighs on you until you get used to it. Everyone that I let use a trolling motor for the first time is happy to have me take back over after time because it is a distraction until you get used to it. Then it eventually becomes second nature.

In theory, spot lock is great - but not so much on a kayak.  Even a big kayak is fairly light and is susceptible to the slightest changes in wind and current. Maybe it's just the Minn Kota on my AP120, but on breezy days when I engage spot lock that motor is working overtime and constantly pivoting. That has to impact my stealthiness. It also makes it hard to pick apart docks and along the bank. But it's a big help fishing offshore even on windy days.

Muy interesante! I have actually been wondering if MK might ever introduce a scaled down version of a spot-lock capable trolling motor for small boats and kayaks.

No Nitros in here, and that's why I go there!

Doritos please.

Yes, I've got alll these THINGS ( except the chips ) and enjoy using them ... and also, not using them (wading).  I'm not sure that I want to catch more fish.  Sure, I always have that desire in the back of my mind but there is a limit to catching that sometimes makes fishing less interesting.

One other thing that's really kinda fun about FFS is followers, when they move to eat - you know that vibe you get when a fish starts to shark wake on your topwater? Feels the same.

Yeah, I think it would be so very exciting. However, remember my post about getting hooked on the one video game I played in my life and staying up until four in the morning? The rabbit holes scares me. I'm afraid I'd look at the screen and not look up like the guys do on YouTube.

Not only are they productive but they are QUIET as well. I might not catch the largest or the most, but the experience of quietude is very important, perhaps even more important than catching fish.

Quiet matters a lot to me. My career was talking, so I love reaching places where there's no talking.

It sounds like a dream come true. I'll visit Al first and then you...if only family obligations don't keep me in Maine.

I’ve seen it here, use be out on my dock and people would come by chit chat. Now 50% don’t even look up from their screen.
i was fishing the Ocklawaha one time, I was over to one side working a spot, when 3 youngsters came by. One was looking the bow screen, one was looking at the controls screen, the was on his phone. I honestly don’t think they even knew I was there.
The Ocklawaha is a beautiful river with coves and creeks. It’s a shame they missed it.

And I know I'm just as vulnerable as them.

I like to watch MLF and in the present format the pros are only allowed to use FFS for one period because it is too effective. Usually the pros catch more in their FFS period than the other two periods combined. Now this is not true of every pro at every event but by and large it is mostly true.

A MD DNR biologist did a study on this year's results and presented at the Black Bass Symposium. Roughly half the time it helped catch more fish and half the time it didn't. Half the time it caught bigger fish and half the time it didn't.

This is absolutely true and something I think a lot of people don't realize before they make that transition. You have to love figuring out the puzzle more than catching the fish. The bigger the water, the harder the puzzle usually.

I’d sure be more comfortable. More fish?, who knows, though after spending that kind of $ I’d probably spend more time on the water.

So true. I used to fish Lakes Superior and Michigan and I'd catch no bass, no bass, no bass, and then so many bass, but it takes time and persistence to find them.

I always put a bag of chips in my lunch.  I enjoy the variety boxes by Lays Chips.  I never end up eating them with my lunch and end up eating them in my truck on the way home.  😆🤣

I'm going out in my rigged boat this afternoon.  I won't even turn the fish finders on, let alone FFS.  With the wind direction forecast and the fact that I'm probably putting a vibrating jig in my hand all day, I probably won't spot lock unless I need to retie- I'll just drift with the wind (which is forecast perfectly parallel with the shore at a nice 3-4 mph).  This lake is too deep for powerpoles even if I had them.

But by golly I'm taking some chips with me now.  I really want those golden doritos, but I'd have to make a stop for them.  Gonna have to settle for whatever is in the cupboard.  Wish me well.

This thread has generated a lot of interesting comments.  I’m puzzled by the fact that no one is talking about what type of chips (brand, color,  type) catch the most fish. 🤔

Thank you. I was just about to post something saying the most important part of this topic is being overlooked!

Are we talking local/regional varieties? Are we talking large bags/small bags. Ridges or not? Potato chips? Corn chips? Chips made from chickpeas? What gives here? Man, I gotta know. Is there a better time to eat them? And is it only chips? What about crackers like cheeze-it’s? Or chicken in a biscuit?

What about crackers

If we're going crackers, there's only one that's worth the time. Original Townhouse.

Good one. I’m a big fan of townhouse over ritz TBH, but for whatever reason, ritz is always what I buy….

Chips 4 fish

I think whatever chips Swamp Girl is eating has everyone else's chips whipped by far!! By at least one or two thousand fish for sure! Swamp Girl's chips win!
