Do you use real leader material?

I've always been "Use whatever I have laying around", guy, but after the last couple years of using Seaguar Pounce, I've seen what a true leader material is really capable of. The stuff is so much stronger and more abrasion resistant than a mainline flouro, it makes a huge difference when fishing around heavy cover. I was fishing 10lb TactX to a leader of 10lb Pounce last weekend during my tournament and pulled several fish out of the weeds and laydowns with it on my neko rig. It's made me a believer.

I use seaguar blue label on my spinning rods. Casters are pretty much all fluoro or straight braid.

Use whatever gives you confidence in it. I fish heavy cover in pickerel waters, blue works for me but for the price I may try Pounce, maybe.

seaguar blue label

This is pretty much all I use too. For about 10 years now.

I need something that stands up to the pack of northern pike teeth, and this stuff is up to the task.

I drug a bass over a zebra mussel covered dock crossbar tonight with 10lb Pounce. There isn’t much that can stand up to those things.

Why is pounce better than other Seaguar leader material, like abrazx? The description suggests it’s not as good at knots and handling as other leader material. I have switched to using sunline leader which handles great and seems really tough, but most of my leader is in 40 lb and up, for pike. I have 10lb blue, but have thought about going to a 15 lb leader for drop shot and other finesse.

I use Seaguar Abrazx or Red label for leaders. I haven't had any issues. Some people may call me crazy but I SWEAR red label has got to be at least 20 or 30% stronger than what it's rated for. I swear I think my reel would break before red label will snap. lol Also abrazx I can drag across a field of concertina wire and it wouldn't get a single knick. What I am trying to say I guess is that I am a total Seaguars fanboy. 😁

I have had the same exact experience. I have only ever bought one spool each of 8, 10, 12, 15, and 20 pound Red Label so maybe I got steroid batch, but I feel like I never need to use a 20# leader because the 15 is already a hassle to break off when I get snagged in the riprap.

Seaguar Invizx for fluoro, Suffix Advance for mono; no problems.

Great minds think alike!👊

Abrasx isn't designed to be a leader material, it's a mainline. So something like Abrazx, while a very good line, isn't the best option for leader material. A true leader material like Pounce is a harder material and even more abrasion resistant and also has less stretch. A mainline like Abrasx is softer because it's designed to be cast while trying to spool up with a line as hard as a leader material would be a nightmare.

Based on the charts on Seaguar website, Pounce is very similar to the old STS leader material, which is much cheaper. So what's the benefits that justify the higher price? As a fan of Seaguar lines, I'm just curious.

@newapti5 Formulation and quality control are what makes dedicated leader material. The 5x Froghair example clearing the eye of a size 22 hook, while other brands need smaller dia. 6x to do the same - clearly I'm fishing where every half-lb of breaking strength matters.

Leader is made for toughness, the best-possible knot strength (made for tying to other lines), and extreme control of uniform diameter and uniform properties in every length.

Note that hard, abrasion-resistant leader works against the other properties, toughness and knot strength.

They put more money and time into making it, to make it better.

Using the example of Toray Solaroam ExThread main line, the spendiest fluorocarbon spooled for mainline, they report separate formulation for each diameter they produce. ExThread manages both low memory and limpness, which are also competing properties.

The characteristics for Pounce and STS are similar because the products are targeting species of fish that spend their time in environments that have some very similar characteristics like rocks, weeds, and wood.

For that reason, both offer exceptional abrasion resistance and strength and deliver all the other benefits of fluorocarbon like fast sink rate, low stretch, and invisibility.

Diameters for most Seaguar lines are the same for the lb test sizes as they are all built to conform to the proper break strength. There are a few exceptions in line diameter sizes but not many. Both Pounce and STS are made from 100% Seaguar fluorocarbon resins.
