Do you land your chatter baits on the bottom?

Featured Replies

If you want to fish them on the bottom you certainly can!

You can fish this bait as low or as high in the column as needed.

Sure. I often yo yo hop them off the bottom. Just vary your retrieve till you get strikes. If I’m hanging in grass on the bottom I try to just reel it above the grass barely hanging up. If I can lol

For the most part I reel them just fast enough to feel vibration.

Caught my best fish of 2026 on a deep point letting it hit bottom then start a slow retrieve.

For throwing at targets I'm still grabbing a spinnerbait.

Been doing pretty good with a chatter bait this year, typical retrieve is cast it out let it hit the bottom then snap it off of the bottom and slow roll it back. A lot of times it will get hit within seconds of it touching the water.

It depends.

The answer to this particular question is very much “let the fish tell you” and basically- that’s the only right way to fish any bait +/-.

Any of the ways it can be fished can work - but only the fish know which one they will bite today.

For my lakes and fish, bringing it slow at the depth of the grass cover tends to be the right answer. In some places that means throwing into 8" of water and waking it back, most often it means fishing 1-4' and keeping it just out of the sight zone (given the clarity and light levels at the time). Occasionally that means slow rolling just off the bottom if the grass is only 6" thick or so. In that case I'll let it hit bottom on a cast, give it a little pop to clear the weeds, and roll it across the top of the weeds.

I usually let it sit on the bottom for 15 seconds or so, then start jigging it back. During the Shad spawn, I just throw it and burn it along the bank or brush lines.

What speed/gear ratio reel is best paired with them?

While some may disagree, I don't think it matters that much.

The goal for many is to reel juuuuust fast enough to activate the blade.

There are a few schools of thought with bladed jig fishing. One is rod type (graphite vs glass vs composite), another is action (fast vs mod fast), another is line type and another still is reel speed. I honestly really struggled when I used braid to FC on a composite mod/fast with a 7.1:1 gear ratio reel. I was working it too fast.

I switched to all FC and a 6.x:1 gear ratio and have done so much better. For me, my fishing style (i.e. I am spacing out during some of the casts), using a 7.1:1 gear ratio made my mindless winding go too fast and the braid to FC, with it's limited stretch likely was ripping the lure out of grass too much.

So your experience will vary, as well the day, the time of year, what you are fishing, etc. I really like my 6.x:1 gear ratio and using straight FC. You may have better focus than I do and can ensure that you are reeling slow enough to just keep the blade moving just barely.

Absolutely and at any depth. I very frequently catch big catfish by accident when using a bladed jig.

Gear ratio selection is a personal preference is based on your ability to move it as quickly or slowly as you want. That is mostly dictated by the bladed jig itself. For example, it has been my experience that the Original Chatterbaits have to be reeled faster to get them to vibrate. On the opposite end of that spectrum is the Fogy from Siebert Outdoors. If I give it a sharp snap to get it started I can then slow down to the point of barely moving and still get hard, slow thumps out of it. I've been told by good fishing friends that the bladed jig bladed jig is of the same ilk as the Fogy when it comes to slow rolling. I'm sure there are many quality bladed jigs out there that can be slow-rolled easily.

Depends on the cast/cover. But if there’s an unobstructed path for it to reach the bottom, it‘s headed there. Then I pick it up off the bottom with the rod tip and reel and a few quick bursts, followed by a short pause (bites occur in this window often for me), and then begin my retrieval/presentation. My theory on this is that it gets bit at this time by fish that came to investigate it on the initial fall, but didn’t commit. They interpret the quick upper motion with the skirt flare and then drifting back down as injured baitfish trying to get away from them to survive, and instinct/reaction takes over for them to feed. But an ichthyologist I am not, so don’t take that as gospel.

Another reason to let sink on the initial fall is that many jig bites, bladed or not, occur on the initial fall if the lure hits the water softly enough, and an active feeding fish are close by.

My suggestion would be to find a spot of clearer water, toss on your polarized lenses, and cast it around a bit. See what you can do to make it behave like forage. Bang it into shallow cover and watch how it behaves. Now smack that cover again and see what happens when you pause right after contact, then begin your retrieve. Then once more where you speed up after contact and then pause. Then do something I haven’t described here because it intuitively seems right based on the behavior you’re now learning the lure to possess. Now leave your clear water pocket and go find submerged structure (preferably grass for a bladed jig) to experiment with the actions you now know you lure possesses, and what the fish are into that day.

And my last piece of advice is to lock the rod in your hand. There is no substitute for experience. The more you fish it, the better you’ll become at fishing it. Learning how to learn is the trick to anything in life. The rest is just time invested.

Not really a big issue - I usually throw them on a 6.6, but any reel is fine for the fairly slow retrieve they need.

Couple weeks ago I threw one out (too hard) and got a backlash. After getting the line picked out, reeled up all the slack and discovered I had a 4 pounder on. Been trying to duplicate that retrieve ever since.
