Best way to grab a pike.
I do some shore fishing for muskies. 2 sugguestions for you. First, pick up one of the Lindey gloves (the orange one)! http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_38705____SearchResults Second, I use a grip as well. I prefer the Rapala grip. http://www.rapala.com/products/tools/lock_n_weigh/ I prefer this grip because the head of the grip spins and if the fish goes into a death roll, it won't wrench your wrist or rip the grip out of your hand. Between these two items, you should be able to handle any size pike you catch. Hope this helps and good luck!

Susquehanna River near sunbury
Welcome to THE boards! I've only had a chance to fish that section of the Susquehanna once so can't offer anything on spots to fish. Smallie baits that have worked for me on the Juniata (grew up in Juniata county) and the Potomac include bandit cranks, jerkbaits, tubes, tiki sticks, bucktail jigs and buzzbaits. Hope this helps some!

Red Spinnerbaits, Any luck?
Check out Strike King's site. They have it in the Premire Plus series. I have a few red ones but have never really thrown them much.

Maryland's Who's who!
I attempted to hit dam 4 this morning. Ha ha ha ha ha! Um, the river was only at 18 feet then. Most of the time, I was literally standing on the tow path fishing the river (where I could). Needless to say, didn't stay there long. Popped over to the C&O canal in Williamsport. Surprisingly, I found clear water! Worked some small plastics for a while and wasn't having any luck. Picked up a jerkbait and was fishing it a little while and just wasn't having any action. Thought to myself, did this rain a cooler temps shut them down? For grins, I started really working the jerkbait real irractic. All of a sudden, I saw a bass come up and miss the bait. Not 2 minutes later, same deal! Started tweaking the cadance and finally figured it out! Ended up with 5 small keepers on 2 colors of the Smithwick Rattlin Rogues. Finally, that monkey is off my back! ;D

what's the best knot?
IMO, the only thing good about the North American fisherman show, Knot Wars. This season they're doing leader to braid knots. I believe they have several knot illustrations on their site now.

Burning Spinnerbaits
I usually start burning spinnerbaits in the post spawn on through fall. For me, they excell in clear water in the summer around all kinds of cover but I like throwing them over grass the best. In that condition, I like a spinnerbait with a translucent skirt with double silver willowleaf blades.

MinnKota or Motorguide ?
Bought my jon boat in 97 and put a 43# MG on it then. Finally decided to upgrade to a 24V 70# model. I went with another MG.

Maryland's Who's who!
Yeah, I saw the report but I'm still going out somewhere. I wanted to hit PEPCO but the river gauge I follow was at 10.81 and rising FAST so that game plan is out. There's a couple of ponds I can hit and the C&O canal here in Williamsport. I got rain gear, and the bass are already wet so I'm still good! ;D

Brush Hog Colors
Watermelon/red flake and (I'm surprised no one has mentioned it yet) red shad.

Maryland's Who's who!
I popped over to Black Hills at lunch time yesterday to wet some line myself. No luck, but like you said, it was great getting out! Even with the rain coming this weekend, I'm getting out again!

Spinnerbaits with painted blades
Brightly colored blades (chart or orange), I'll like throwing in stained to muddy water and low light conditions. But painted blades like the one you have pictured, I'd throw in clear water with a high light conditions.

Maryland's Who's who!
While the fishing has been slow for me in the past at B.H. after ice out, I have caught bass early on there. I may pop over there tomorrow for a lunch time outing at one of my favorite spots! ;D Nice Brian! Is the ice completely off the canal now? I don't care if I have to walk the C&O canal from williamsoport, I'm fishing PEPCO this weekend!!!! And I'm not leaving there until I catch a bass!!! ;D

Quantum Alliance Rod
I have a Quantum Alliance musky rod that I've been using for about 2 years now. Great rod IMO.

Polorized lenses or not?
You can also take a pair that you know is polarized and hold them up in front of your pair in front of a light. Now rotate one of the pairs 90 degrees, if the light gets blocked out then both pair are polarized.

Maryland's Who's who!
I popped over there last thursday to check things out. I was surprised to see they took the gates away from the ramp with ice still being on the water. From what I recall, they used to keep the ramp blocked off until most of the ice was gone. I'm hoping to its not too long til the ice is gone and I can get the boat down there and do some real fishing myself!

Upper Potomac Walleyes
Popped over to Dam 4 this evening for a little while. Had a guy below me on the rip rap wall that pulled 2 walleye in. Talked to him for a little while, first one was about 17 and the second was 24. Sounds like they're starting to stack up in there now. I'm the same way as you, I usually hook into a walleye now and again while I'm fishing for smallies. Jerkbaits and cranks are what I usually nab them on.

Worst time hooking yourself
I THINK I can beat that...... September 4, 2004. Decided to head out musky fishing (from shore) that morning. I hit the one area that had been really hot! I started out throwing a top water and wasn't having much luck. All of a sudden, I see a familiar boil! So I start fan casting around that spot. BANG! I hook up with this musky and after a decent battle, I land a decent musky! Here comes the fun! I grab my pair of standard sized pliers to remove the rear treble hook from the ski. Just as I barely touch the hook, the musky thrashes, driving the front treble hook into my index and middle fingers on my right hand WELL past the barbs on those huge hooks while still attached to the fish! Did I mention I'm right handed? LOL! So there I sat with a knee on top of the musky and my free hand on the grip to keep it from shaking until someone came by (which was about 20 minutes or so after this all happened). The angler unscrewed the hook from the bait since the cutter I had would not cut that huge hook. I ended up at the ER as well. Needless to say, that musky (all 45 inches of it) was not CPR'd and ended up in the frying pan! BIG TIME rookie mistake that "shouldn't" happen again now that I am properly equipped with the right tools for the job. :-[

trailer hook...what size...or do you use one??
2/0 Gamakatsu spinnerbait trailer hooks for me. Like Marty said, most of my spinnerbait bass come on the main hook but I've had enough on the trailer (even a few better ones) that I won't fish without them!

Harrisburg, PA Spring Classic & KVD
Hey Joe, I honestly hadn't followed the Erie get together. :-[ I'll have to check it out and see if that's an option for me to make that. I'm trying to work out the numbers and all that to see if I can do the Pickwick trip. Raystown is definitely an option I'd say! Keep me posted and as long as I don't have my daughter when you plan to go, I'd be up for that for sure!

newbie from maryland
Welcome to THE boards! Be sure to check in on the MD Who's who thread in the Northeast section. I created that thread to give us MD anglers a chance to chat about our local waters and figure out where everyone is in the state. The thread is several pages long now so look through it and see if there's anyone close to you!
