I imagine dogs that are already trained can help the trainer on a new pup. When I was at the conservation event this past weekend I watched a guy throw a retriever dummy into the pond. Dog went and grabbed it. When he got back to the beach his master had him sit in the water with the dummy in his mouth for probably 5 minutes before he gave him the ok to bring the dummy to him. I can only imagine the hours upon hours of training that goes into creating a successful hunting dog, or any other kind of working dog for that matter.

Like any dog they take a lot of work to train. Normally, the dog isn't the problem, it's the owner. I think @A-Jay is fully capable of turning this pup into a fantastic companion.

The animal kingdom doesn't have the ability to reason. They just "do". If things aren't just right, they may not spawn and the females eggs will just get absorbed back into her body. No different than if she hasn't found a suitable male. There are "year class" fluctuations. This is really followed in the walleye and trout world and is 100% related to water levels. I'll use Lake Michigan salmonid populations, trout in particular, as an example. I can use Door County Wisconsin as an example that I am familiar with. There was a steady decline of the water levels on the Great Lakes for 20 years. Creeks used for spawning dried up. King salmon are not native to the Great Lakes lost their spawning areas. Brown trout, brook trout, and rainbow trout, which are native to the Great lakes lost their spawning areas. The DNR supplemented the spawn for many years and while the populations were sustained, the sole tributary was in Strawberry Creek where the DNR hatchery is. Water levels have been on the rise the last 2 years. The DNR has been dumping fish in the recently filled tributaries to attempt to bring back a natural spawn.

I've only fished around gators twice in my life. The first time was on Santee Cooper and the 2nd was on Lake Toho. On Toho, I was more upset with the tour boats a bit ticked off with me for fishing where they're trying to show off the gators. On Santee Cooper it was my first ever run in with gators. It was early spring and they were sunning themselves on the shore. A huge gator got spooked as we trolled by it. It jumped in the water and caused my 17' boat to rock like a wake boat just went by.

I want to add on to @WRB changing water levels on river systems has a huge impact on the spawn. Water that's too low or too high in the spring is going to have a negative impact. This is an impact that you won't notice for a few years. It is also something that I think is more well know in the north where our water is colder and the "growing" season for fish is limited. If there is a poor spawn because of flooding or drought this year, the impact to the fisherman won't be noticed for 4 or 5 years.

Myself, my father, @cadman, Mrs. cadman, and a number of others volunteer annually for an organization that spends a day introducing kids to the outdoors. Had 39 kids today. We run the fishing portion. A number of kids caught there very first fish today. There is also archery, dog expos for both pointers and retrievers, and .22 rifles. The instructors for the rifles were marksman trainers from the local Naval base. All the kids went home with some fishing lures, and fishing educational material provided by the Wisconsin DNR and duck calls, t shirts, and hats from Ducks Unlimited. There were a lot of raffle prizes as well that included fishing combos and long guns. Unfortunately I'm having issues loading the rest of the pics. I'll keep trying.
