AVG 2011 update ?
X2! Just about one year ago, I woke up to a near fatal virus on my computer protected by Free AVG. One brand new computer a week later, and I installed Norton 360. No virus problems, but several attacks were caught the instant they tried. Less than $70 protects 3 computers for a year. Spending $23 a year on each computer is a whole lot cheaper than a new hard drive, or in my case a whole new machine. As long as your computer comes with Windows (so you can reinstall) there is no way a virus can kill your PC or Hard Drive to the point that you need a new one... Just about every anti-virus has it's weaknesses - free or not. These programs are written to detect viruses that are known, people are always writing new viruses faster than anti-virus companies can protect against them (have to know WHAT to stop before you can stop it). There's no 1 program that's going to stop everything. That's why I have so many haha. (just don't let them all run at the same time, they will yell about each other being viruses...). The virus I got last year Nate was a type of ransomware (?), or at least that is what my pc guru called it. It took him several attempts to get that darn bug off my computer, which was a 4-5 year old desktop. In my line of work, it is nearly impossible to accomplish anything without my computer, or the programs and data files that reside on it. Have you ever tried to work on a machine that kept popping up a warning that asked you to download a program to remove the virus every ten minutes? Well, I can't work that way, and lost time is lost money. By the time this old machine was fixed, I had purchased the new machine I've got now, and had been working for a week on it. In my book, that means I made a week's worth of income. In the last year, I have twice visisted websites that had enough wrong on that page, that Norton closed the screen right down to a one inch square, followed by a warning that an attempt was made to invade my machine. The last one happened in November, and happened as I clicked onto a well trusted local news site. It was rather funny that the following day a client of mine called and said that he had been infected by a virus, and might need help recovering data files from our accounting program. I think I shocked him when I asked if he had recently tried to visit this same site I had a problem with. His virus didn't kill off his computer system either, but it did cause problems with those data files. When I had to charge him for the two hour drive to get him his backup data files, I found one new customer for Norton. I know that this is a rather long winded reply, but the point is that sometimes the old adage about that ounce of prevention does come true. To me, Norton has been money well spent.

Can I...?
Let's start with the easy part. When you can see the fish, the fish can see you. Most fish that can see you, will not bite what you are throwing at them. As you read more threads here, you will see this advice repeated many, many times. Now, what would I do? To start with, try to stay out of sight. Crouch down to get within casting distance, wear clothing that blends into your background, and make low angle casts to avoid splash. As you're only talking a foot of fishable water, try tossing out anything weightless. Soft plastics could include senkos, flukes, a floating worm, etc.. If you want to add some weight, try a small nail weight. This might be a good place to think about throwing a small to medium sized minnow style hard lure like a number 5 or 7 floating Rapala. The important part though is staying low so you don't spook these fish. If you think you have spooked them, sit down on the shoreline, and don't fish for 15 minutes or so. The bass will soon forget that you are there, and you should be able to start casting again. Good Luck!

"I don't know Jack, but I know Shine"
You two youngsters need to go on the road trip. Just offshore from the resort in the sunken remains of Old Birmingham. One if its former industry was a saanother sitell that made barrel staves from the white oaks that grew in the area. I'll bet there are still a few old timers around there that could tell you all about how to build yourself a barrel, and probably how to char the inside of it. Now pour those squeezings into that barrel and leave it for 10 years or so, and now you're talking smooooooth sipping whiskey! Of course you could just cheat and stop by Lynchburg on the way home to buy a used one.

bass pro/sales tax
Just one short story, and a few pertinent facts for those who may purchase out of state products. The State of Michigan, along with a few other states were having a problem with their residents purchasing smokes out of state from low tax states. Then they banded together, sued these retailers for the right to go through their customer and credit card lists. Shortly after that, they sent bills for the missing tobacco tax to those folks. For some, the tax bill ran into the thousands. It sort of makes a person wonder when the states will start to do the same thing to recoup lost sales/use tax revenues. And even though your state may include a use tax declaration on your annual income tax form, leaving this part blank could mean that the statute of limitations has not yet begun. As person could possibly owe use taxes for any number of years that the state wanted to go after. Filling in the form with a zero, or with an amount lower than the real amount owed could also lead to a fraud charge. So if you have trouble sleeping at night, do the right thing and pay the tax. Or, just figure that you'll never get caught, sort of like all those smokers did.

bass pro/sales tax
I don't think you created a big deal, I simply call it an opportunity for folks to enjoy a learning experience. Many people may not realize that the issue of collecting sales taxes on interstate sales has been going on for a number of years. While specific rules dealing with the subject have been on most State's books for years, it was these same states that have tried to get around these rules by taking quite a few large retailers to court. The main reason the states did this was due to the fact that they weren't very successful collecting use taxes from their residents. Some of these major retailers have agreed to collect taxes for these states in an attempt to reduce their costs of litigation. But, there is also the hidden cost that these companies are hit with such as additional bookkeeping to try to track multi-state sales along with the preparation of multiple sales tax returns. People may not like to pay that sales tax. They may just simply want ignore the use tax. But all of us have to deal with the hidden costs related to this subject, by way of higher prices for the products we purchase. People should also consider what all of this could mean to the smaller retailer who uses the Internet or other means to sell their products to residents of other states. It's my guess that if these folks were forced to collect and remit 40 or so different sales taxes, most would choose the option to stop providing interstate sales. That wouldn't help either the business owner or the customer. So the next time you place an order with an out of state retailer, try to remember why you might be charged sales tax, why you might want to think about what you could owe use taxes, and how much the cost of the things you purchased were raised to cover these costs.

Marker Buoys for Shallwater bass fishing
I generally have to agree with Dwight when it come to using the typical buoy. From my experience it is the perfect way to call in nothing but seagulls (the two legged kind). But if you want to mark a spot, try what I used to use, Pill Bottles. A small white aspirin bottle isn't easy for most people to see unless they are looking for it. I used to have a few in my boat all the time. Take the bottle, tie on a specific length of cord line, and attach a weight to the other. I had them setup for 8', 10', and so on in two foot increments up to 20'. Each one was wrapped up and put in a ziplock bag with the depth marked on the bag.

So excited
Is that for the fishing, or for when you finally do the return?

If BPS has a location in your state, you're going to have to pay sales tax. Don't like it? Move to a state with no sales tax or order from another retailer. And if Cabela's is in your state, you're going to have to pay sales tax from them as well. It isn't just BPS. Any business with with "brick and mortar" store in your state, you'll have to pay sales tax on online orders. You can add to that. If your state has a sales tax, it most likely always has a use tax which is due on all purchases made from out of state. In Michigan, you are required to make an annual declaration of all such purchases on your income tax return, and to pay this tax. No comment on how often it is used. :-X

If my dog keeps this up..he's gonna need to wear underwear!!!!
I'm thinking that Grimlin might not have known that JRT stood for Jack Russel Terrier. Sometimes the initials get confusing which is why I had to give up telling people that our dog was an ACD. Easier to call her a Aussie Cattle Dog or Blue Heeler as I get a lot less confused looks. But you are right, that breed is hard to slow down. Here's hoping that she finds a new pack to adopt her quickly.

SADNESS IN THE BIG TEN
Maybe, maybe not. I seem to remember this new guy coming to Michigan and having fun putting a whooping on Woody a few years back. With Lester stuck in the bayou, Hoke just might be the next surprise.

Mega Millions Jackpot $355 million
Ya just gotta do the math. Take the cash option, so that reduces it to 1/2, keep your favorite uncle happy, so toss away another 40%.... That should leave you with a paltry $110 Million. Now divide that in half, with the first part going into a charitable trust. Even at a modest rate of return, the income from that investment should net about $1.5Mil each year. You can gift $10,000 to 150 worthy cause each and every year. In my case, the rest would be split equally between nine of us. Both mothers, the five kids, the war dept, and little old me. All the relatives can beg their mothers, the grandkids can beg their parents, and the wife can do whatever it is that pops her bobber. Me? I'm going to buy a new class-c diesel motorhome (with a single bed), a new multi-species boat (with one seat) to tow behind it, and a cell phone that can't be switched off silent mode.

This Would Be Funny if it Wasn't so Sad
Haywood isn't going to land anywhere near UM. They wouldn't put up with Moeller's issues, so anyone with a felony abuse history is toast here. Saban.... Let's just say he is in the conference that deserves him. It would be nice to see Harbaugh come back to his roots, even though UM can't match the pay scale of the NFL, and it's not like they're in the SEC. But Michigan will find a coach that will carry on the long tradition here as the winningest team in the NCAA.

Happy New Years!
Good morning everyone. Here's to hoping that you've all gotten up bright eyed and bushy tailed this morning. Of course for those of you who imbibed a little too much last night. Who got to the point where your "merds got all wixed up, and you couldn't peak so splain", and now have to reach out to arms length to scratch your ears, remember those wise old words. A sober man wakes up feeling the best he'll feel all day and then gets to feeling run down later on. You guys on the other hand, you'll be feeling better as each hour passes. See how much you have to look forward too! ;D
