Eastern Ma & New England Area Fishing Reports
Feel your pain. Hammer and I hit Johns Pond in Mashpee today, Hammer with 2 dinks and a trout and I NADDA, not a single sniff all day. Those 10MPH winds, lol were a steady 25 all day, We threw everything in the bag at them but it was like the fish had lock jaw. Thanks to Keith for the hospitality and gd company. We still aren't done, plenty of fishing left, hopefully with better results

Retirement and fishing
Well put sir, I retired 4yrs ago and fish whenever possible. Problem I have now is I'm to old and feeble to handle the launching and loading by myself and it's not always easy to find some one to go with me.

Mass Bass Fall Fishing
Lot's of factors to consider, depth, wind, current, the structure on the bottom, weeds. No simple answer. With most jigs it's keeping in contact with the bottom (swim jigs not so much) I like fishing a jig and my preference is a 7ft M/H power with a ex fast or fast tip. I use a baitcasting rod, but if I were to fish a spinning rod it would be the same set up. I like a long rod to pick up slack line in a hurry. The rod you have should be ok for jigs up to 3/8 -1/2 oz. with a 2500 series reel. Set your drag accordingly and lay the wood to them when you set the hook. Gd luck

Fall fishing on the Quabbin Reservoir
Thanks for an enjoyable day Keith. I never look at as anyone out fishing anyone else, I was just luckier. lol. A day on the Q with the beautiful fall foliage, gd company and a few fish to boot, what more could we ask for. Fri doesn't look like it's going to happen, for me, so, i guess it's good bye to the Quabbin until spring. God willing. We still have plenty of fishing left as long as the weather holds, so It' s going to be in your rig. I'll be in touch. Thanks again.

Spinning Rod for small soft Swimbait
I use a Falcon Bucoo 6.6ft med/heavy power, xfast action (feels more like a Med power), fairly inexpensive rod, with 12lb dura cast braid & 8-10 lb flouro leader, cast a mile and handles larger smallies very well. Also doubles as my blade bait set up in the early spring, tip is soft enough to give the bait the action it needs and yet have a gd hook set on small swim baits and the blade.

Fall fishing on the Quabbin Reservoir
Nice, I'm headed there on Wed. What gate did you fish out of? Looks like you rented a boat, where others launching their own boats without trouble? Fished out of 43 last wk and had to launch at the last ramp down.

It was a pleasure to have you aboard, on a very tough day of fishing. As anyone knows that fishes the Big Lady Q, she can fish awfully tough, but being on a very beautiful body of water with good company makes the day a lot more enjoyable, Hopefully we can get back out a time or two before the shut down.

Anyone Have Any Luck In Southern Nh Yet? (4/6/12)
I Just spoke with her about a wk and half ago, she sold to tackle supply depot and still handles some of the sales. It was easy to drive up to No. Bass Supply and usually get what you wanted. Still bummed about Cabelas, I hate BPS, the place is poorly lit, and a lot of times they are sold out or don't have the color you want, and they're always pushing BPS brand. I try to do my business with Granite State Rod and Reel, Joe Catalano is a straight shooter and a wealth of knowledge.

That's a bummer. BPS's prices are higher than Cabelas.

Eastern Ma & New England Area Fishing Reports
Arrived a little late at the Quabbin (7AM) gate 43. I have been fishing that place for 30yrs and have never seen water level so low. Launch went well, boat fired right up and down the lake we go. Get about a 1/2 mile out and the motor dies. After having gone over everything yesterday at the house and installing a brand new battery for the bow mount to say I'm just a little a PO'd would be an understatement. So it was stay close to the ramp and use the TM, managed 2 smallies one pushing 4 and the other at 2.5 and a few dinks. Put the boat back on the trailer and headed home at 1:30. Pulled the cover and changed the gas filter and some fresh gas still no go. Called the shop and in she goes tomorrow AM. Hopefully nothing to serious, and I'll be back at it later this wk.

I'd be up for that. I'll be at gate 43 tomorrow morning, I drive a maroon GMC PU & I have a Q boat a white 16ft Spectrum with a 25 merc4 stroke and have been fishing there for over 30 yrs. I'm like Fishing Rhino retired and am frequently looking for someone to tag along as most of my fishing friends are younger. I usually fish out of area 3 gate 43 I love to meet up with other fishermen if any of you see me in the lot or on the water stop and say hello or we could meet there.

Lake Willoughby Vermont
He caught it on a tube, but said jerkbaits, and spinnerbaits worked slowly were working well. I fish Quabbin a lot in the spring, and if the water temps when your up there are in the 40s up to mid 50 degree range I'd be throwing the hell out of a blade bait. I don't know if you've ever fished one, but just use a med action rod and lift and let it fall, most hits will occur on the fall so stay in touch with your blade. Gd luck.

Lake Willoughby Vermont
I can highly recommend Lake Seymour for smallies. A friend of mine has fished it & rates it as one of the best he's fished, his PB came from that lake.
-
Using an inline spinner
When fishing for smallies in the clear lakes we have here, I like a Mepps #4 in firetiger retrieved just fast enough to turn the blade.

Struggling in Maine!
Other baits to try on very cold water. Blade baits and hair jigs. Couple of different ways to fish hair jigs you can swim them close to the bottom or drag them slowly on the bottom, don't hop them just drag them slowly and stop them every couple of feet, with the hair jig you can tip them with a small piece of gulp minnow, the bite will be very suttle they'll just pic it up. Not many people fish hair jigs anymore, but in cold water they work well especially of smallies. Colors I like black, black and yellow, black and brown. I like the 1/8 to 3/8 oz use the smallest you can get away with. 12ft to 20 ft of water. Good luck

Rivers running pretty high right now and is dirty, I'd give it a few days if the rain holds off.

Shane, Contact Mike at Siebert outdoors. He'll work with you & try to give you what your looking for. His lead free jigs are top notch, good quality with a good strong hook.
