  1. I prefer the r+ spool over the 1016. 1016 is a fantastic spool but its almost "too controlled" if that makes sense. I still like it more than a lot of stock spools on the market however. All my tdz r+ are left hand and ive been fortunate enough to source the 7:1 gear set for them which personally makes it the perfect reel. When i need a new set up, the alphas is on top of my list...unless a tdz r+ pops up. They just dont come along often enough to pass them up. Alphas isnt going anywhere being new. Im still in the long process of switching all my reels to the zillion/ td-z frame.
  2. Magic eraser or simple green/toothbrush. Leave them on the handle
  3. td-z r+ and it isn't close. i can't say enough good things about that reel
  4. my home waters are notorious for being dirty and i fish a Green pumpkin variant more times than not. The only time I goto black/blue/purple is when the water is muddy from run off or rising.
  5. Hanks bait and taxkle in waterloo ia. Ill be in the area tomorrow if you want specifics. He still has elite tech smallmouths left, too
  6. My local tackle shop has the aetos for 99$ if you want to go that route. Familarize yourself with the sk2 reel seat first. It is personally the worst reel seat ever made
  7. Call Daiwa. They will either have the closest dealer send you one or they will send you one.
  8. a 3/8oz spinnerbait and a rod to handle 1 1/2oz A-rigs are 2 different rods for me.
  9. Toss up between Gene Larew Ring Tube and a Dbomb/Beaver
  10. something in the 26 IPT range is what I prefer for squarebills. That's usually 6:2 - 6:6 depending on who makes the reel. Mine is a 6:3.
  11. drive around to the auto entrance and park by the oil change doors. walk in, get a cart and go get your old battery from the car.pay for the new battery at the auto desk and drop the core off at the same time.
  12. ebay or ask a local tackle shop who pours theirs or if they will pour you some
  13. d bomb bick baits bick craw
  14. Show us a picture of the AR bearing if you think thats the issue
  15. Theres really only one way to put an AR bearing in..either it fits or you line it up until it does fit.
  16. snapping turtle
  17. 1-2 times a year. I use a few different cleaning solutions. Carb Brake cleaner or acetone for bearings, simple green/hot water to scrub old grease off parts. use both oil and various greases depending on the part youtube TackleJunky81 and watch his 3 part series on probably the most in depth reel cleaning video available.
  18. As far as what the drag configuration looks like, it most likely is a small circle thin washer that sits on top of the AR bearing over the cranking shaft followed by 2 concave washers that have to be seated correctly in the () position. No idea if the speed spool has a click drag or not but if it does, then put the clicking drag plate on. Spin the drag star back on. The bearing being seated correctly or not isn't what to look for there. It will seat itself correctly when you screw the gear back down. Make sure UNDER the bearing, between the frame and bearing, you don't have too thick of a washer/the incorrect washer or something in there that shouldn't be. I know the feeling that you are describing about the spool being difficult to rotate. 9 times out of 10 it's put back together incorrectly.
  19. What do you mean by hard to reel? if you removed the drive shaft when taking it apart, there's either a bushing or bearing underneath it. Did you possibly add the wrong size spacer or get something under the bearing or bushing? That would cause the reel to be feel like there is "pressure" under load.
  20. is your cast control knob tightened all the way? that would make the spool more difficult to turn,
  21. did you put the drag spacers back correctly? They should look like this (). Sounds like you may have over greased the drag stack. These are touchy and don't require much to operate correct. if you took it back apart and now the main gear is rotating the spool but the retrieve is rough, you most likely put something back incorrectly. It's hard to say without having the reel in front of me.
  22. have you taken it apart recently? did you try to pop the handle side plate off and make sure the pinion is seated properly? the chasis that holds the pinion has to sit the correct way on those two posts /w the springs on top of them to correctly mesh /w the main gear thought even it was seated improperly it should still get some sort of contact /w the main gear. Is your drag too loose? generic question but if your drag is really loose the line guide will move but the gears won't engage to turn the spool. same goes for the cast control knob on the handle side under the drag star. make sure it isn't really loose.
  23. There were a few more pictures posted on FB somehwere than on *** and other news outlets when the story was first brought to people's attention. I cannot for the life of me find the story but I'll do some digging.
