Abu Garcia Zenon X, MGX, MGLTX
I had an mgx. Loved the lightness until it turned into a coffee grinder. I've heard that magnesium and composite frames tend to transfer gear issues more than aluminum. So Lew S came out with the custom lite which is supposed to be a ultra hard frame. So far I've had no issues after 2 seasons. My mgx was first Gen so I can't comment on the newer ones.

Sorting out my gear
If you go with braid get Vicious No Fade Braid. Get 50 lb to start. I think leaders are useless IMHO. If you get green there is no need to recolor ever. I use Palomar knots and crazy glue the tag end. It's worked for 30 years. Spiderwire stealth is a poor braid IMHO. It has to much drag and resistance to letting the bait free fall. I also hate noisy braid and the Vicious is very quiet.

Establishing depth of fish
We were fishing a location on Candlewood lake in Connecticut. Last Sunday and catching fish on a spot in 38 feet the size of a car. It has a dropoff from 10 feet close by. Smallies were grabbing bait fish off the bottom. Blade baits were the ticket. You would never know the spot was there unless you found it by accident. It produced 9 smallies in 20 minutes.Guys have to remember they may mark bait alls and fish but still not get bites. When the water is cold the bite is off more than it's on. We had a 20 minute window to work with.

Sorting out my gear
I could see mono but one good backlash and the flourocarbon is garbage. You kink it it's done.

Sorting out my gear
I would never start with flourocarbon on a baitcaster. 50 lb vicious no fade braid.

Geary feeling reels that are relatively new
That's a good deal !!!!

Moving from Braid back toward Mono Baitcaster
You wrap it around a wood dowel and either get your lure back or break a hook or pull in a dead body. Either way you lose a lot less stuff.

Is it better to have a better reel or rod?
A nice 200$ rod with a 300$ reel on it is my best way to go. Feels light and balanced. Dobyns rod has lifetime replacement . Lews custom light helps make it balanced and light so it all goes together well. It's like an extension of my arm.

SEVIIN Reels: Durability Proven by Testing
I used to be against composite frames. I have had them break on spinning reels and my buddy has had a few snap at the reel seat. This was all around 2003. I've since bought a couple of Lews custom Lite baitcaster with tanzo tech composite frames. They are supposed to be extremely hard. I've never felt them flex in the 2 seasons I've owned them . So based on that I think people should try the sevin reels if they are looking for a new brand.

Should I get multiple rods and reel setups?
Shore fishing ? I'd get a medium casting with a reel to cast light baits and replace your medium heavy with the broken tip.. add a third mh setup
-
How would you rate yourself ????
I'm a 6. Wish I was better.

Wind knots...I'm at a loss
Agree. And use vicious No Fade Braid

SEVIIN Reels: Durability Proven by Testing
That's one fishing trip for me !!!

What does it mean when your mono backing breaks?
It means don't use backing. Tie to the spool holes

Largemouth bass died.
I would have done the same thing. I agree with the guys saying use a net and cut down the time if possible. Sometimes it happens.
-
heavy pitching reels
You need a 4.9 oz. Lews custom lite
-
Braid recommendation
Vicious No Fade Braid

Why does my Shimano baitcasting reel get smoother in cooler weather
The grease gets thicker and clearances change.

Who’s good at add on rod end balancing ?
I did it for years. It definitely helps certain rods. I used the rod balancer butt caps kit bps sold.
-
Who’s good at add on rod end balancing ?
I used to balance all my rods. Then I started using lighter rods. Then I met Dobyns. Case closed.

Baitcasting Rods Micro Eyes Or Standard Eyes?
Any good 8 strand braids should be quiet. I've heard more noise from the level wind than the guides.

Aldebaran 23 BFS Frame Material
I think so to but I'd check with Shimano

Aldebaran 23 BFS Frame Material
It's not a material it's a concept. It implys strength and stiffness. It can be a mix of materials because of this.
