Jackin or Jacking
I've done this as well. I had some decent success as well fishing this along ledges they were suspending above. Ledges were in 25 ft, bass were about 20 ft and we couldn't get them to bite cranking, throwing big worms or dropshotting. I learned this from a guy that used to fish a carolina rig with a lazy ike attached to a long leader. He would cast it out and then make long pulls when retrieving it. Guy always ended up cashing a check and would get a couple walleye every now and then too. However, I now fish a spoon or bladed jig when deep fish are suspended with better success.

Best cold weather gloves
I also use the Nitrile gloves I picked them up at harbor freight. I use the 9mm ones and I think they were 10 bucks for a box of 50. I think I've had the same box for 3 or 4 years now as the gloves are pretty durable and I usually get multiple uses out of each pair. I like that these gloves extend onto the wrist, it allows me to pull them over the cuff of my sleeve if I'm fishing something on the bottom like a jig/shakey/tube. This keeps my sleeves dry. If I'm cranking or throwing a jerk bait where my hands are pointed downward, I'll tuck the gloves into the sleeve. I will wear those cheapo-stretchy- knit gloves underneath them when it's really cold. I dont like the bulkiness of gloves and these fit very snug. Even with the Nitrile gloves over top, this set up keeps my fingers warm and dry.

New tournament circuit announced today
BASS has a crappy TV deal. With them having BASS LIVE, I don't know a single person that watches the ESPN2 show that airs weeks to months after the event. When they bought BASS back from ESPN, I was really hoping for a new TV deal. But no, same crappy deal they had before they have again.

Favorite Pencil Popper ?
I've been throwing the shower blows shorty a bunch and really like it. It has replaced my poppers and walk the dog baits as I can do both with the SB. I have the larger size one as well but it has been less effective. I'm sure it will get a workout when I hit Chickamauga this spring. I had to change out the hooks as they were not strong enough and kept bending. Pretty crappy for a $20 bait IMO, but still worth it.

Classic Bracket Tournament Questions & Notes
I figured Hackney saw the average lake depth was 200 ft and decided he didn't want to drive from LA to GA just to lose Did not see that Boyd was the next competitor in the classic line .... thanks for that as it adds more drama to an already drama filled fishing season

New tournament circuit announced today
So Day 1 and 3 you compete with 40 other anglers to get TV exposure and days 2 and 4 you get zero tv coverage. Big names/co-owners will also get a large chunk of exposure regardless of how they are doing.(IMO) Some of these guys did better when they were fishing MLF than they did BASS and I think that is due to the field being so much smaller. I just think there will be guys that find the grass was not greener on the other side.

New tournament circuit announced today
It's a lot easier to provide more coverage on 8 guys than it is 110. This will change with the new format MLF is running. Now that they have 80 guys, the coverage will be a lot less. Then it will become the guys that are doing the best get the most camera time... And now guys like Marty Robinson and Fletcher Shryock will be back to not winning events and not getting camera time. So I really hope for their sake that the sponsor dollars have changed drastically for them based on tv viewership MLF will come up with live coverage but it wont be free IMO. Just like you can get access to old MLF events but at a cost.

A question about thermoclines and fall turnover
Ok, that makes a lot more sense now. I am familiar with fishing the south shore of Erie when there is a north wind. (I was actually given the nickname of north wind as everytime we tried to fish Erie, we had a north wind regarless of what the forecast called for) I was thinking the turnover was a specific event that happened lake wide when the surface water temp reached 39 and then would begin the turnover event. Thank you for the clarification.

A question about thermoclines and fall turnover
Is that really a turnover then? Isn't that just water that has been mixed in that localized area? So if there is a heavy rain and the water coming into the lake from a creek has dirtied it up, thats a turnover for that localized area? With a wind that creates a mudline 5 feet out from shore, thats turnover? I think this is going towards the flipping vs pitching discussions. Where most people say they are flipping, when they are actually pitching. But that is exactly why I am asking these questions so I can get some clarity on what is being called "turnover"

A question about thermoclines and fall turnover
As I have been reading other posts it seems as if I do not understand the turnover. It was my understanding that 39 degree water is the most dense and will "sink" to the bottom causing the higher temperature water from the bottom to move towards the top. This mixes the water and cools the warmer water as it sinks. This creates a lot of discolored water, loosened debris rises to the surface and sometimes you can detect a sulfur type of smell and the fishing becomes extremely tough. (although the general time of the season that turnover occurs can be difficult anyways) I have always had the belief that when this "turnover" occurs the water will mix, therefore you will not see a significant difference between the temperatures at the surface layer to those below it. Some of the other posts have suggested that near 50 degrees this will happen, someone said it happens in the summer and watching BASS brackets they mentioned that the turnover could be a reason for the lack of action. Could someone with a better understanding of the science behind this explain it to me/us?

Weekend tournament
Great job and thanks for the detailed write up!!

Winter and time of day you start fishing
I go from first light to noon almost all year. Since my kids are in their teens, they will sleep in on the weekends so I'm not missing out. This way I have all afternoon and the evening for family and responsibilities. I love being on the water as the sun comes up, however the wind is my enemy in the winter. No matter how many layers under my 100MPH gear that wind still cuts a chill right thru me

I have so much tackle I can't find anything?
I've got some room at my place to help "store" things for you. I'd even test them from time to time to make sure they worked as intended.

The Death of the small tackle shop
To me it seems all the issues with the younger generations are products of the older generation. I for one, do not want my children working 14 hour days pouring concrete like I once did. I dont want my kid riding his bike 21 miles a day to work for 5 bucks an hour like I did. I dont want my kids hitchhiking because their bicycle is broken down and they cant get to their job. So I try to do things that make my childrens lives easier than the one I grew up knowing. When I look back at what my dad did, I see the same approach was taken with me. I heard when I was growing up how easy we had it as kids and we didn't suffer like the kids did years ago ... (like suffering as a kid was a good thing?) My dad didn't raise a spoiled brat and neither am I. I'm just trying to provide a better start to their journey than what I had. I hear all the time people slamming the kids getting participation trophies..... Most of the people I hear complaining about kids getting participation trophies are from the generation that handed them out. Kids are smart if they are on the computer and their phones, thats what the future holds for them.

Do topwater baits work in windy and cold weather settings?
It will be tougher in those conditions for sure. When the chop gets too much to throw a topwater, I turn to a jerk bait and/or hit the windy shoreline win a spinnerbait/chatterbait. Many times running the windblown shorelines with a spinnerbait or chatterbait will save days that have been lost by not being able to fish topwater or slow moving baits because of said wind.

Big fish are knocking my topwater spook straight out of the water, is the spook too light?
I have heard people say to dead stick it after that initial blow up and I am sure it works for them. What works for me is after the initial blowup, I pause for a second or two(letting the bass regroup) and then I twitch it really fast for a foot or so and then kill it. I discovered this when using a toad and they miss it. Dead sticking it hasn't worked for me (I dont use a floating toad) so I started the crank it really fast for a few turns and then kill it technique and was pretty successful. Tried it throwing a Shower Blows and it worked for this walk the dog type lure too. I also use the fast retrieve just as I am approaching a piece of cover/structure and then kill it just after passing by.

LMB: How deep is deep?
I've caught large mouth and small mouth at around 50 feet jigging a blade bait or a spoon. It's crazy to me how they just suspend over the baitfish in that deep water. It's not something I saw living in Ohio as I didn't fish lakes that were that deep. But here in East TN I've done it at Cherokee, Douglas and Norris both in the heat of summer and in the dead of winter. I always wondered what drives the baitfish that deep?

Google Earth As A Fishing Tool
I use it all the time as lakes around here are dropped 20-30 feet for the fall draw down. I can go thru the maps and see what cover/structure will be available at whatever the water level is. There are some areas that have 20 feet of water over them at full pool. I love hitting these areas when they have 3-5 feet of water in them. Although they traditionally say that falling water pulls the fish out. I have found good numbers in the shallows leading to some awesome topwater action. An ole timer told me that when they drop the water the craw fish get exposed then they have to move. When they do its only down a couple feet at a time, which keeps the bass looking shallow even as the water is falling. Made sense to me.
