Smallmouth on Rapala DT16?
My best fish on hard baits have been caught on jerkbaits. Otherwise, soft plastics are the most productive class of lures. However, smallmouth can be caught on any class of lure, including crankbaits, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and topwater. When the bite is strong, experiment! 8-)

plastics rod(s)
I suggest a 6 1/2' or 7' Medium Power/ Fast Action spinning rig. That is what I use for all soft plastics. 8-)

2008 NCAA Tournament - Bassresource pool & bracket challenge
If Memphis hits their free throws and has a "normal" overall performance (3 pointers, strong boards and defense), they win the National Championship. That's asking a lot, especially when their shooting from the line is third worst in the nation! We'll see, they certainly stepped it up today. 8-)

If you only had 1 lure to use...
Nothin' to talk about. 6" Senko, watermelon with black flakes. But I could make do with a Fat Ika, same color. : 8-)

Pickwick question for RW
Scott C, No, I deleted the picture. I don't EVER want to see a picture like that. Keeping big smallmouth makes me want to puke. >

Temperature Trends
I fish the White River below Bull Shoals in north central Arkansas. The water coming through the dam is taken from the bottom of the lake and is a constant 52 degrees year-around. Although an occasional big brown is caught during the day, the majority of 10+ pound browns are caught at night. The only exception is after a shad kill when the trout lose all inhibition! Current trumps all other factors on this river, too. Rising water is good, falling water is terrible. If you can "catch the release" as generators are open and water moves downstream, fishing improves by at least a factor of 10X! 8-)

Texas Rig Tube?
2/0 EWG might be fine, but I use 3/0 EWG Offset Worm Hook on a 3 1/2" tube. Hook it at the top and bring it through the offset so that you have about 1/4" of plastic to hold the hook. Eye the spot on the tube where your hook shank begins to bend and push the point straight through both sides. The hook will ride up against the tube and can be skin hooked if the cover requirs a totally weedless presentation. I fish a 1/8 oz bullet or barrel weight with a bead, unpegged. 8-)

Temperature Trends
On large rivers, temperature trends, barometric pressure, moon phases and other variables have no noticable impact. River fish are all about current, baitfish migration and the "general" temperature (hot or cold). Species congregate and spawn at various times and those periods are important. However, the daily bite within any time and temperature frame is only efffected by water flow. Specific examples on the Tennesse River (north of Guntersville) are the congregation and spawn period for smallmouth bass and sauger in January and February (45-55 degrees); white bass and crappie currently (+/- 60 degrees) and in a few weeks, Kentucky bass (70+). However, when water temperatures vary outside these ranges, the concentration of fish is still present whether they are actually spawning at that exact time or not. So, my observation is that the effects of many variables may come into play, but the only constant is water flow. When we have good water, we catch fish. Without current, you might as well stay home! 8-)

Rumor of a defection
All righty, this is the story: Glenn presented the staff with a token of appreciation, which came as a complete surprise to us all. It is our privilege, individually and as a group, to work with Glenn. At the dinner Wednesday night all the moderators received a Abu Garcia Revo STX. My new reel has replaced a Metanium on my jerkbait rod and I will report back with a side-by-side review after fishing the Revo for awhile. I can tell you that this is a beautiful reel and a very nice gift, which I sincerely appreciate. More, later... 8-)

Loomis MBR844c IMX or Mossyback BCR854?
The MBR844C is a great all-around rod, but it really shines as a dedicated jig and/or soft plastics stick. The BCR854 has gotten rave reviews from guys that have both. However, the IMX in either series is the better choice. Enjoy! 8-)
