  1. Maybe I’ll try both. I was planning on Ned rigging it and Crankin it. But I’ll switch it up if they don’t work. I keep a little of everything in my bag of tricks.
  2. I have caught most of my biggest fish of all kinds in bad weather. I still do not intentionally fish bad weather, because for every one of my best bad weather fish, there were countless bad weather trips that produced nothing.
  3. I guess the people that inherit this are the ones who can remember their past lives.....

I wear contacts. Unfortunately, the ones I have to wear are horrible with sunblock. The fumes coming off my face sticks to them and dries them right out. I would like a pair of Rx sunglasses, but I’m too cheap to buy them only for fishing. It would be nice to not wear contacts with sunblock and I can see perfectly for tying with no lenses. I’d just raise the glasses for tying. But since I’m still too cheap to drop a few hundred dollars on sunglasses only for fishing, I’m stuck peeling ruined contacts off my eyeballs like stickers every time I go fishing.
  5. Love to hear what you think of the Scorpion. I went with an MGXtreme to go light, instead of the Scorpion recently. But I have a heavier rod that it would still pair nicely with.
  6. Work sent me past a BPS today, so I picked up a few things I don’t need, since I never got to use the stuff I bought this spring. Hopefully, I’ll get out soon.....
  7. I don’t usually fish bass this late in the season. If you were fishing now, would you hit a very shallow small pond? Or a bigger, much deeper reservoir? Air temps have been 60-66 in the day and 45-55 at night.
  8. Amber. But green is good, too. The old glass green ray ban p was great. But I’ve been stuck on amber for the last 5 or so years. Doubt I’ll ever go green or grey again.
  9. Yeah, it’s all fun and games, until it’s the dead of winter and you’re getting ice in your guides every time you go to reel up.
  10. I have my original Shimano ax trigger reel and red Berkeley rod that I bought maybe 33-35 years ago, with my own money. Except the original rod got hit by a car. I replaced it with a re-released replica of the same rod from Berkeley in the mid 1990’s. Great rod. And it appears to be the exact same rod. No top guide insert, though. They always pop out if you overfish them. It was real back then. But today I wouldn’t consider it “real.” I’ve become a snob since then.
  11. It depends on what you like. The only benefit to newer reels is lightness, which IMO, reduces fatigue if you fish 7-10 hours at a time. The older, simpler reels need little maintenance, which means no reason to crack them open to clean, grease and tinker with. So they make for very boring winters.
  12. Had my Aldebaran locking up on me for no apparent reason while on vacation this summer. Charter boat guys were looking at me like a total novice. Eventually, I realized a few days later, I had a little knot that looked like a simple overhand knot about halfway through the spool that was getting caught on the levelwind every couple of casts. It was the darndest thing. Because I had no idea why it was happening.
  13. A 6’ rod cripples casting distance. Try a 7 or 7.5’ rod.
  14. Might be the gears. Could be that the main gear or drag stack is not seated flush on the reel shaft. Or maybe the pinion or yoke springs misaligned? But that’s just a guess. If it’s not under warranty have someone that knows how open it up to see. It sounds extremely fixable.
  15. All I know is my father would never fish anything like a spinner bait because there is too big a risk that the fish might only hit the blades.
  16. Low quality spinner baits. Every 500 casts I’d get a bite and miss.
  17. Wow. I was surprised by these answers. I rarely ever fish less than 4-5 hours at a time. Which is part of the reason why when I wind up with lots of other more *important* things to do, like this season, I don’t get out much. There’s no way I’m fishing for only an hour or two.
  18. I’d say daiwa’s Tatulas can do it. The new Tatula 100 has a stronger drag than the CT’s and can work for deep crankin (no matter what the stats say). But Shimanos, from Curado up are known for their drags, too. The new tat feels a lot like Shimano drags. I do not frog or punch, so I can’t speak to these methods.
  19. I’m not superstitious. Though, I’ve been catching less fish since I broke my lucky knife removing an old kitchen backsplash. That said, I only use Aveeno sunblock, because it does not affect fishing. And when I’m fishing alone on a concrete platform pier, with the water up to my ankles and there's a shark bigger than me 3 feet away checking me out, I go home and don’t look back.
  20. I would usually have a witty response here, but I’m sure it’ll violate the ToS for the site. But, I hear ya..... Its snake oil, IMO. The placebo effect is so powerful that in some studies it makes guys in baldness studies grow hair!!! If you add in the mild psychoactive effects, a little drowsiness and things like that, the placebo effect gets stronger. https://www.nytimes.com/1998/10/13/science/placebos-prove-so-powerful-even-experts-are-surprised-new-studies-explore-brain.html I am against marijuana products as “medicine” and because it is bad for people. I wouldn’t think of touching it. But I am not against legalization. As a drug for people to do what they want with. As long as they ban it in public and ticket anyone who uses it openly in public. The smell is sickening.
  21. Any quality name brand, easily 5-10 years in saltwater if properly cared for, even if it’s not rated for salt.
  22. Just spent the $750 and have a decent clear mask put on.
  23. I’m sorry. The have to be counterfeit. VMC’s are extremely sharp. I have some about 10 years old that are still dangerous to handle. Note: these did not come with commercial lures, they were stand alone upgrade hooks.
  24. Live bait fished the way it would be fished if it were artificial will out fish artificials. You will outfish the people that throw bait blindly and just sit and wait if you properly fish an artificial. That’s what I’ve seen over the years. It is way more difficult to outproduce bait with artificials. So if you are doing that, you’re doing it right.
