Smallmouth Spinnerbladin
Hey ya’ll, I see fishing for bronzebacks in my near future. I have a lot of questions on this subject. Taken broadly, what are the differences, if any, you notice between what makes a spinnerbait productive for smallmouth vs for largemouth? Additionally, for smallmouth, are you usually utilizing a faster or more erratic retrieve? What would you say are your best seasonal periods for smallmouth spinnerbladin? Im serious, talk to me like I’m 5 years old on this subject because I don’t know a darn thing about smallmouth but where I am moving in MO offers me good opportunities for large smallmouth, probably better than largemouth I believe. We’ll have to see.

Welcome! You say you are returning to more conventional fishing... honestly I'm interested in the "why" if it had anything to do with effectiveness of fishing with swimbaits. If it could make a good post, consider typing one up about your experiences with fishing swimbaits exclusively(?) for a while. I would read it for sure. I've browsed Swimbait Underground in the past but never had an account... cool site. - Nate

What would you use these rods for?
Latest Sale Thread is what I believe he's referring to. In the tackle section Cbump sorry I don't feel I'm much help in answering your question. Your first rod is like the universal baitcaster 7' MHF but you say you don't have much need for it. And I don't own a lot of spinning rods so don't have diverse applicatons for them. I dunno. The baitcaster is the same length and lure ratings as my jig rod - iRod 704C, so maybe jigs would be suitable with yours, I dunno. I also toss big worms or larger texas rigs on it.

Favorite 6 inch Texas rigged worm
I write 6" ribbontail on the packaging before I toss the worms. Actually, here is your real answer. Due to the refractive index of water, objects underwater appear 33% larger. So 9" is actually 12". Why, then, does a fish see a 12" worm as a 6"? This is the most important part. The answer is.... it's because they are stupid and failed math.

Or maybe try a mag 2 before you try golf. The fact that I can use a little 3/0 RB hook with a 9” ribbontail worm is just awesome. Soft, decently durable. I bought two more packs today just cuz. If I throw those right now in any lake, I will catch fish.

Devils Horse
Your PB was on a devils horse correct? Certainly appreciate very much the tips on rigging up the horse. I did replace the hooks on mine prior to this trip as other members have suggested. Just kinda threw together hooks that I had on hand. I think I put two #4 mustad triple grips in the front and a #2 gamakatsu ewg on the back. I have great faith in those hooks. I also removed the front propellor and reversed the direction of the back propellor for greater disturbance. I don't believe the way I was fishing them will work best all of the time, but it might work well some of the time. Obviously I fooled one. Thanks again And I, of course, bought another devils horse, lol. I would have bought five, but alas, the store near me only had one.

Devils Horse
Well, yeah, I guess it wasn’t moving too fast in reality and there are some inherent pauses in working the bait, but for a devils horse, I was working it very fast, and around no visible cover. It was shallow structure. Around maybe the 6-8ft range, lot of contour changes and a nearby drop off. It’s the same general area I caught my PB in winter. I just set myself up there and decided to work on top. Total surprise, but I should know better. We’ve had a lot of rain recently and that lake typically fishes good on topwater or moving baits.

Taking A Quick Breather
I ain’t really help either. I can think of many times when I didn’t expect to hook up with a bigger fish, but did. I think it is because I am not adapting enough on the water. I might have a fixed plan for the day, or a fixed idea of how the bass are going to bite, but not enough flexibility in my approach or enough knowledge to recognize what makes a good area a good area. But I can reflect on where these bigger fish bit and it makes so much sense after I just think about it for a bit.

War Eagle "Screamin' Eagle Spinnerbait" Users ?
Screaming eagle is a great spinnerbait for burning and in general. My favorite spinnerbaits are 3/8oz Nichols frames, 1/2oz+ Booyah Covert frames, and Stanley’s intermixed. There are a few exceptions

- Small lakes = small fish?
If I had to guess, I think 70ish% of 5-6lbers I’ve caught have come from ol muddy pond, 2 acres, maximum depth about 7ft. Water visibility sometimes less than a foot. Never caught one over 6.5 though.- Taking A Quick Breather
Yeah man, that’s a great point to bring up. There’s a thread floating around about small vs big lakes, but I think fishing for hawgs could mean fishing a 10 acre pond or fishing a 5000 acre lake. I have enjoyed fishing larger lakes this summer because I feel like I am learning more. And I think they offered me a better chance at catching a hawg based on where I am and what lakes I know. Up where I was in NY, pond/small reservoir fishing wins, no contest.- are you rubbing your soft plastics to dull them?
Bassresource dismissed. We will reconvene once we have regained our sanity- are you rubbing your soft plastics to dull them?
I hear @Team9nine is big into that kind of thing- are you rubbing your soft plastics to dull them?
Wait WHAT? Mr. Hottle, you need Jesus- this bait monkey. I think it's YOU GUYS!!
Awesome fish, seriously man. Still, I will take one of my custom Nichols spinnerbaits over 3 jackhammers. Bait monkey does not win this battle- Taking A Quick Breather
- are you rubbing your soft plastics to dull them?
The “shaky head wizard”, my occasional fishing partner here, swears by doing this to zoom plastics. Not all plastics, he says. I do not argue with his success- Senko colors... why so many?
At the moment I feel I need to try a bunch more of the colors of the zoom mag 2. Plum, junebug, black, watermelon red, tequila sunrise, scuppernong have all been good. I even have a pack of a color called huckleberry.- James Webb Space Telescope
You may delete your account again- Senko colors... why so many?
Fav color is still straight black. Been a while since I tossed a senko though- It Was Raining and There Were No Kids at the Water Park
Water- Lost a Brother
Very sorry to hear. My heart pours out to you man - Small lakes = small fish?
