Rod for crankbaits and spinnerbaits?
The highest is a 1/4oz? Do the spinnerbaits have finer wire hooks? I might use a spinning rod. Something like a 7MHF

@thediscochef yeah man, been sick of the heat. I will probably night fish tomorrow night. Random comment, just poking around on Navionics, I happened to see that the 5lber I caught a few weeks ago was not on a random point. There is a channel swing that runs into the side of the point. There's shell there too.

Active topwater bite based on weather
@ol'crickety that is really sharp on the observation regarding herons nearby. Never thought about that. Thank you I’m not strong with topwater but I do feel comfy with a few lures

summer wacky worm rod
6’6” medium fast spinning rod.

Crankbait addiction
I bought two boxes of crankbaits for a lake that abused me and called me names. I don’t even use any crankbaits right now, but I just feel like there are some lakes where you are really messing up if they are not somewhere in your rotation at some point in time. More Bassmaster classics are won with a crankbait style lure somewhere in rotation than any other lure type. Crankbaits are here to stay, forever

Bourbon (Whiskey) For Beginners?
I want to say I can get it at the same price at a liquor store around here, but would have to check. I also ain’t crazy about buffalo trace ??♂️

@Bluebasser86 that really really surprises me.

Prevailing Winds
I’ve been known to just start chucking a spinnerbait when I have no idea what the heck is going on ?. Or just start graphing around looking at stuff and admiring the wildlife ?

Bourbon (Whiskey) For Beginners?
I liked the taste of bourbon and whiskey right off the bat. I think Maker's Mark was one of the first ones I tried, along with Jameson. I thought Jameson tasted great back then but now it's meh. In my opinion 1792 and Pendleton are two really light tasting options to try. Pendleton in particular. My favorite bourbons are probably Woodford Reserve and Knob Creek but the best I've had is WhistlePig 10yr small batch, which was a graduation gift to me. I still have the bottle

Just me, but as long as the pike are big, I used to love catching pike. They are scrappy as heck. Sure beat up my spinners though

Prevailing Winds
I’m talking about this: https://energyeducation.ca/encyclopedia/Prevailing_winds So for instance, here where I am in TX, our winds tend to come from the South Basically my question is, for someone like me where prevailing winds are from the South, are spots on North shores or structure that faces the South at all more productive, generally speaking, and not at all in absolutely terms. There’s lots of stuff that I think are more important, but I just had this random thought this morning

Prevailing Winds
Do you notice any marked, general difference in productivity between spots that are directly affected by prevailing winds and those that are not?

@Woody B are you far from Badin? Just wanna know how that lake is doing. I heard a report from somebody recently though and they said they did really well for numbers, catching a bunch of 2-3lbers

fishing youtube video question. the influencer's hookset?
Gonna be a lot of different opinions on the hard hooksets. I fish a lot of single hook baits with stouter equipment. I believe that fishing style influences my hookset, so I tend to swing hard and it's definitely not unusual for me to send a small fish flying on the hookset, especially if I'm standing. It's just what works for me and I'm not going to change. On the topic of drag, I don't thumb the spool and I don't touch the drag so sometimes the drag will slip on the hookset. That's fine to me. Usually there is still adequate pressure

The Bridge to Heartache
Holy cow what a great story. Thank you, and sorry you lost this giant. I throw spinnerbaits a lot. To answer your questions at the end there, there are only two things I want to happen when a fish bites me on a spinner, but I want to say in advance that I don’t think you did much wrong: 1. I want to make sure that the fish has my spinner solidly in its mouth before setting hook. This a very brief pause. But by the sounds of how this fish bit, it’s my least favorite scenario. When the fish bites so aggressively that it immediately starts pulling the spinnerbait away from me, that’s my worst hookup to land ratio, probably. The reason is that unless I consciously drop the rod and reel in the slack before the hookset, that fish has already pulled me into a position that may or may not be favorable to me. My rod is already loaded. I do not like that. 2. I just want to keep tension on that fish and play it out. I feel comfortable with a spinnerbait just playing a fish. As long as I have a good hookset, I’m perfectly comfortable letting them squirm around and try to jump me off. I’m not in a hurry. But with the obstructions you mentioned and the difficulty of fishing this spot, that probably was more difficult. And you were in the dark So, don’t sweat it, you probably didn’t do much wrong, if anything, and thank that fish for giving you a thrill.

Focusing on Individual lures/techniques in "highly pressured" city ponds
@Rora @RRocket I’ve found meditation to be one of the best proactive things you can do to change the way you think. Of course fishing can get you in a meditative state as well. Not as effectively, in my opinion, but still beneficial nonetheless. A simple meditation routine is paying attention to your breath while sitting quietly. Not much different than paying attention to working a worm across the lake bottom, paying attention to the way that it bumps against stuff and trying to detect any bites. You are putting all of your focus onto the worm, similar to focusing on breathing

Crankbait addiction
I have probably 150ish spinnerbaits and a whole 3600 box full of blades and parts

What's your opinion?
Uhh idk. Maybe Whataburger? I was excited to try it when I got here but I’m really not that big a fan. It’s alright. My favorite fast food is In N Out, Chick-fil-a, Taco Bell (unapologetically), Bojangles, Panera Bread, and Popeyes I never ate much from chain restaurants

Will you southern boys take your weather back...please.
I read the weekly fishing report for my local lake and it basically just said “Yeah so this is probably starting to sound like a broken record but the weather is still the same - it’s hot as heck - so until something changes, nothings changed.” Lol I am simply not used to this kinda constant heat

Texas rig rod
Oh this is too easy iRod Genesis III Harold’s Lone Star Special. I can do a lot with that rod but most of the time, it throws t rigs with the weights you described I have it paired with a Curado MGL 150

War Eagle Spinnerbait - Not Impressed
Was the swivel gone too? Anyways, war eagles have been okay to me. I really only like their finesse spinnerbait for certain things and then otherwise I only like their screaming eagle for burning, particularly for smallmouth. The trouble I have with war eagle is that they are just really dang fragile. I’m not talking about the swivel or the blade here. Plenty of people are going to tell me that fragile, thin wire catches more fish. Whatever, if that’s what you want to believe. But the way war eagles are constructed… and I don’t think it only has to do with the wire size… makes them really fragile.

you working stiffs. do you play hookie to fish?
My favorite currently is Thursday evenings after work. Because who fishes on a Thursday? Wait one day and you’re on the weekend

Look at that big ol swimbait
I run a lot of points on this lake and I will continue to. But, of course, not all points are created equal. Right. I have no idea what brought them there or how long they’ve been fishing that spot
-
Look at that big ol swimbait
Yup all of that is correct Thanks for your comment. I’ll check those points in the future but at the moment they looked better on a map than on the water. I wasn’t overly impressed with the way they laid out. Plus the little signs of life wasn’t very encouraging. There’s another spot that I have now checked twice that is frustrating me because now, both times I’ve been there, I’ve seen some life and I like the way the structure kinda lays out but I still haven’t caught there. I’m not a fish I guess
