Automatic Line Guide Centering
Is line stacking on the spool an issue with the guide removed? Reel Mechanic, is that a good idea to alter the operation of a reel that way? oldschool mods and refurbs a lot more older Garcia reels than I do, so he know what he is doing. IMO any kind of line carriage that dis-engages when in free spool, will cause line stacking. Line carriages that don't will and do cause friction as the line peels off of the spool. But line carriages that dis-engage usually re-engage after a couple of cranks of the handle, and are usually on the opposite side of the reel when they do (causing line stack on that side) Tight Lines!!!

G-Blanks Rod Review
As posted... steezy, As you have seen the warranty from the company isn't what a lot of the OTHER rod companies offer. They are like many custom rod shops, limited lifetime by the blank mfg. and usually 1 year on the builders components and mfg. Now that being said, I do know that one of the loomis brothers purchased Shikäri back about 3-4 years ago now. My problem with the company is how can they say that any blank issues should be addressed to/by the blank mfg, when that company is out of business and any blanks that were purchased from them were WITHOUT warranties... I own an original SHXi blank. It probably is a good rod, until it something goes wrong with the blank and nowhere is the blank company found. For you I hope the blank never fails. For those that don't know about the Tharp cut split seats, Brad Tharp a custom builder in southeast Kansas started testing hand cut split seats (mostly because Fuji quit selling skeleton baitcasting reel seats) on the Shikäri high end blanks SHXi, SH1. Had a big bunch of failures right in the middle of the seat. That's the Tharp seat... Tight Lines!!!

G-Blanks Rod Review
That's a pretty crappy generalization, and not to mention complete BS. And I am sure that most other builders would take offense to that as well. If one of my rods breaks and I handle the warranties... with blank or component manufacturers directly. It's not a free replacement if the blank fails, but it would be if my workmanship was the fault that caused the failure. Respectfully, all you warranty bashers are out of your minds. Let's first look at the facts in this case: $150 custom rod. That's about what most of us charge in labor alone. The blank is warranted by the manufacturer, ups doesn't chip in and ship for free, even when it's under warranty. Expect shipping charges most of the time. His warranty is weak, but he isn't hiding anything... if you weren't satisfied, before it broke, you could have returned it... that's actually pretty generous. Anyone who is looking to buy a cheap custom is going to need to pay attention to what the ads say. Because when something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Think of it this way, you saved so much on the first few "great deals" that it's like you bought 2 at the normal price and got the 3rd one free... the broken one was just a trial. But hey, for $100 you can get #5... and still only have normal price in it. If you want a no questions asked no fault replacement policy, buy shimano rods. I'm sure that won't be a popular post but it needed to be said. As another custom rod builder I agree with flechero's post 100%.I will add one more thought, that you didn't buy a "Custom" rod.. You bought a manufactured handcrafted rod. You were not physically taking any measurements, nor did he try to get any..The builder is doing what loomis use to do, run on a list of specs for different lengths and actions... The RX8 and 8+ blanks are nice blanks and can build a really light and sensitive (via balancing) rods when the proper measurements are taken, and the reel is ACTUALLY used to help in the build... As far as being as well built as a GLX or IMX that isn't tough at all, especially from a true quality custom rod builder.. Thanks flechero for posting those thoughts...... Tight Lines!!!!

baitcasting rant..
I would say that the reel is/was breaking in. The cc and breaks had to be backed off to get the distance you wanted. Then you oiled the reel, you don't say what you oiled. So many of the new reels when first opened are greased on the shims and I have actually seen white grease in the bearings this alone will slow a reel down. Then add oil and you have a very slick area, will make a reel change. Over time any reel will need to be readjusted, you cannot expect a new reel right out of the box to stay setup during a break in period of a season. I have serviced and tuned many a reel that were over 2 season's old, and when the angler first takes them fishing I tell them they will need to re-learn their reel. On out of town/state work I enclose in the box a note that the reel/s has been set to zero (my way of saying the free spool = cc is set so there isn't any lateral play, and all breaks are turned off). I also agree with bantam1 here that maybe the rod isn't the right rod for the baits being casted or casting technique. Also I have known anglers that get so mad when they don't catch they will place blame on the gear and sell it, and I have seen some blame other anglers... I would say keep the system, and get back to fishing with what your comfortable with. Then at a later time when you have time off of the water, start practicing again..... good baitcaster for beginner?
Muddy,I guess just because I backed the explanation this guy gave that I am on everyone's crap list and now going to question any answers I reply with.... I don't remember saying there was anything wrong with the breaking system..... I believe this was my quote That's all....But hay the users here are the experts on these reels so i'll back out.... 8-)

good baitcaster for beginner?
sweet daddy, Great explanation of your stance on the reels. I agree with you 100% but for another reason.. Most of the beginners I have run across have a hard enough time understanding the differences between the cast control and the spool breaks anyway, so why confuse them with a duel breaking system. I would say pick one style and fish/learn that style of setup then if still curious about the other try it.... Just my old school .02¢ Tight Lines All!!!
