  1. I wonder if those are what I saw a few times but wasn't sure what kind of rods they were. The last time I went to texoma the guys had long thin graphite rods that looked not much bigger than bass rods. Then one time at the Texas City dike I saw some guys fishing with similar rods.
  2. For fishing like that you could go up to a ugly stik big water 9 ft. You could go with 8 or 9 ft Your story is a good example of just luck of the draw on which fish bites what rod. I've been fishing in Galveston with my dad many times. We would have all our big gear out with live croaker and our small gear out with shrimp, squid, cut bait. Then hook a shark on the 8 ft Shimano FX.
  3. You can use them but some piers have limited locations. I've been on some piers that will say surf rods only on the T. When I was a kid my dad bought me a heavy 12 ft surf rod for the texoma dam and I used it everywhere. Inshore, piers, trinity river, lol.
  4. I had this problem when I bought my first crankbait rod. I only threw small bombers and bandits. But I ordered a diesel glass MH. The rod was nice looking but I couldn't cast my baits or feel the cadence on the retrieve. I ended up selling it lol
  5. I have one of the cheap extendable nets with a ziptie around the end and a cheap keychain carabiner to hold it to my belt. Then on my other side I carry my metal fish ruler with the same thing, ziptie and carabiner.
  6. I bring more than one combo usually. Always a drop shot rod and whatever I'm trying out. Usually I am trying to learn a new bait. This year is the year of Ned rigs and jerkbaits. So for the first hour or two I'll be using whatever rod the new baits are on, M, MH, or H. Then if I don't do so well I'll switch to drop shot.
  7. I use mine for big size drop shot. That way I can have a finesse drop shot on my lighter rod and finesse j hook on the MH for T-rigged trick worm size baits.
  8. The Ti reels and the Abu Zenons are similar for me. I want to get one of them but the price is a bit up there and there's no tear downs or reviews. Lew's is coming out with their BFS reel so I wonder if Abu will bring over the jdm Zenon BFS reel too.
  9. I have a 7'4 Frog and slosh LTB and it is a little tip heavy with a Bantam. I got 2 St. Croix rods recently and really like them. Planning to get more
  10. I just bought the regular LT and now there's a MQ. Just like I had just got the Metanium Shallow Spool and now there's a new one. I'm late to the game
  11. I had the opposite happen where I bought a spinning rod labeled as ML/F but I feel like it's more M/mod whippy with power. It was my DS rod but now I repurposed it as a 1/4 ounce crankbait rod.
  12. That was another thing I worked on was line to line knots. I didn't have a bite leader so as soon as it started running under the pier I clamped down on the drag and tried to winch it out since I knew it was over either way once it went under the pier. When I lifted up the line cut clean.
  13. 8lb sniper for bottom contact 5lb sniper for DS 8lb pline cxx for beater rigs 8lb big game for catfish and other live bait rigs 8 and 6lb basix to experiment with as new beater rig line There's so many nice fc lines I've just been trying them out so I'm currently with sniper I use lighter lines now mostly after years of using heavy line with max drag and just winching the fish in. Then I accidentally hooked a bull red while flounder fishing and panicked. I had no experience adjusting drag because I never needed to. Even striper fishing we used 20 lb mono and would winch them in. I broke off on the bull red and it haunted me. So I started fishing finesse and lighter lines to get practice playing fish. I even took up carp fishing for the practice. Probably caught bigger carp than the red lol
  14. Another thing to consider is the reel to stripper guide sizing. If your reel is too big for the first guide it can cause line slap during the cast. This can lead to overruns with fresh line. Sometimes reel size can be hard to figure out if you are ordering online because each company uses different size stripper guides. I have a TFO 7ft that would go fine with a 4000 size reel. Then I have other 7ft rods that 2500 or 3000 go with
  15. I just got some of the nicest rods I've had in the last year and I'm even thinking about using the sealer. I have a used TFO spinning rod with a full cork handle. Should I try cleaning that and sealing it to try out if I like the sealer or not? I heard some people use Magic eraser to clean older cork. What do you guys use? (Sorry to hijack the thread with a question, I'm also on the fence about using cork sealer)
  16. That gif lol It reminds me of my dad. One year while fishing the Red river just below the Texoma Dam he slung my sisters glasses right into the river. We just sat there amazed, we couldn't believe he didn't hook my sister, just her glasses. After that my brother and I would jump on the ground to get out of the way of my dad when he would cast.
  17. I finally got a rod for my tatula LT so I'll get to use it hopefully tomorrow. But so far just turning the handles, it's the smoothest reel I've tried. Mine is the 2500 sxh
  18. I don't mind the weight since it's such a solid reel. It has such a satisfying *ching* sound when you turn the handle and the cast button pops back up. It's almost as solid as when you release the slide on a 1911. The weight difference isn't that bad when compared to the metaniums and zillions. But yeah, it's pretty heavy compared to a MGX2
  19. Added another St. Croix rod, Avid Walleye 6'8 M XF with a Tatula LT 2500 Shallow Spool. I like shorter M power rods for drop shot so I'll be trying it out for that.
  20. If you have a switch under the side plate that allows you to take off the side plate it's probably the Revo 4 based rocket. If you have a long screw that goes from the handle side to the palm side to hold the palm side plate in place it's the older rocket. I know you said you bought it a few years ago so it wouldn't be the gen 5 rocket, but that one has a straight handle instead of a swept in handle.
  21. BFS reels have been around in Japan for a long time and spinning reels didn't phase out there so I don't see them phasing out here. I've been using spincast, spinning, and BC since I was a little kid so I'm proficient in both spinning and bc for bass. My 2 beater/truck rods are spinning and they've caught probably the most fish and my PB for bass. I'm not afraid to take them anywhere while my casting gear is much nicer so I tend to baby them. One week I caught my PB bass on one of my beater rods with a 1/4 ounce Walmart crankbait, then the next week I was catching channels with cut bait. So like some of the comments say, I feel its personal preference. To slow a cast down with a spinning reel you just make a C shape with your hand around the spool as the line is feeding off to feather it. Then to stop the cast you just grab the spool.
  22. Finally got the rod in for my Bantam. Legend Tournament 7'4HF. Plan to bomb horny toads at the bank with it and probably 3/4 ounce jig heads with swimbaits.
  23. Aesthetics are important to me but won't deter me from using something. You could slap a reel seat and a set of guides on a blank right out of the oven after it's been sanded and trimmed and I would use it...... Actually after watching some of the how's it made videos I think it would look cool bare
  24. I'm in the same boat. I started drop shot with a 6'M rod. So when I try a proper 7' ML rod for drop shot I can't get used to it, they feel too heavy I was searching everywhere for the right rod and just gave up on proper drop shot rods Think I'll try a 6'8 M expride next.
  25. You could also add a finesse rod. I know you were asking about a pitching rod or a cranker but the 2MH rods and the M rod has a lot of your basis covered. So if you add in a short M spinning rod or ML casting rod you cover even more. If the bass don't want a senko or other trig plastics then I just either down size them or throw the same plastics on a drop shot
